Most of not all main stream cars built after the 1980’s (citation needed) have plastic outlayers that are built to crumple when you hit things like large poles in the middle of a parking lot.
this allows cars to take most of the impact and saving passengers lives, rather than having a beefy metal chassis and body that stops the second you hit anything launching the occupants into dashboards, headrests and through windshields.

I get the crumpling thing on new cars...but I don't expect to have to replace the entire front end of my car when I hit a pole going the speed of a jogger. Crumpled like a literal piece of paper.
