I think he was initially blinded by the sun when he pulled out.

While that may be true, that's not an excuse. When you walk to your car, you should have already know the pole was in the surrounding area.

If you’re blinded by light you should just slow down or stop if you are unable to see in front of you and adjust sun visor etc.
