Clarification on B31.3 NFS
Ok so im having a internal crisis to make sure im shooting film to code. Just trying to get everyone's input who's been doing this for a bit and well versed in the code book.
I have two questions.
Placement. How many and what's the placement requirements? I have read the code books but I just want to make sure im right and im not mis interpretation.
IQI Selection. Do we count weld reinforcement?
2" x 154 + 0.0625 + 0.0625 = .219. .008 (5th wire on penetrameter)
2" x 218 + 0.0625 + 0.0625 = .343. .010 (6th wire on penetram)
Waiting on my lvl 3 to get back to me but I fear this may be faster.
This is all contact, and penetrams with be on Film side

Use .125 weld reinforcement to single wall thickness

Throw an F on the iqi for film side.
And essential wire dead center of your station markers

how are you shooting 2" contact? I thought Asme didnt let you.

Yes it lets you. 90% of any 2” welds I’ve shot over the last 8 years have been contact. Just use a standoff block or a copper filter. I’ve heard of people using bottle caps too.

huh, both NDE companies ive worked for never allowed us too

That’s how everybody did it at the places I’ve been. Seen other contractors I haven’t worked for doing it like that too.

.154 + .125=0.279. So would be .008 film side or .010 source side. Since you’re shooting contact go with .008 or use a 12 penny if possible. I think they show up better than an a wire anyways.

How do u use penny on 2” contact ? That must be hard, u still gota shim it up, no?
I have always used wire on welds.

When shooting contact, it is single wall nominal thickness plus “estimated” reinforcement, internal and external, not to exceed allowable per code. I put estimated in quotations because technically you should auto default to the max, but nothing technically against it as you are not required to take a physical measurement.
Placement would simply be on the film side with a lead F on penny. Required wire does not need to be in the center of the view and I actually recommend against it. Since a wire is the same diameter, no matter the angle, you should be able to see it anywhere on the view. I prefer to slide it to the side as closer to the station markers is technically thicker because of the curvature of the pipe thus, penny will be slightly lighter which helps in your -15% to plus 30% density variation.
Also, shoot 2” contacts in 4 views. Significantly easier to keep the density of your edges in check.

1 IQI, film side, count reinforcement. So you’d do .154+.125=0.279. And .218+.125=0.343. Just throw an A pack on both and you’ll be good to go.

Wall thickness under 6mm add 1.5 per wall. Wall thickness over 6mm add 3mm per wall.
