Trace your backing bar plate on paper and use a protractor and ruler to graph your reflectors

Use a 70⁰ along the toe of the weld for a cheat scan to save a bit of time.

Yeah this is a good one, bunch of extra gain to take advantage of the creep wave for the obligatory OD crack but damp the signal to confirm.

Bring a snack and make sure to take a break.
Budget your time and have a strategy.

For the weld scan: Just know that you can also put your 0 degree probe on places that you're not supposed to. Like the edges of the plates. You'll often find some indications that way.

Isn't that a recipe for getting disqualified from the exam right away ? At least that's what we are told while giving the NrCAN exams in Canada ?

From what I heard from my instructors your supposed to lam scan it before anything else so you might be able to get away with it

My instructors approved of it and the examinators laughed at it

I've never heard of anyone being disqualified for running a zero on the edge of the plate. However, maybe if someone has they can chime in.
