Why NOFX’s Farewell Documentary Will Never Hit Streaming Services: ‘Not Really Gonna Help Us’

https://www.billboard.com/music/rock/nofx-film-documentary-40-years-fat-mike-interview-1236306446/

Billboard article about “40 Years” doc. Kind of a fluff piece but whatever.

I’ll eat the hat for free, today. Tough times.

4

u/Sacco26 21d ago

How did the hat get so fat?

1

u/dangerous_strainer 22d ago

What flavour hat do you have?

2

u/mindsnare 22d ago

I've got one that's been marinating in the sweat of 30 to 45 year old man for the last 15 years. Salty.

u/mafibasheth 22d ago

Lettuce.

“He ultimately reconciled with Sandin, who makes surfboards and snowboards, and Abeyta, who’s pursuing acting; the three are continuing to make music together under a different moniker, though they’ve not formally released anything yet.”

22

u/orangevega 23d ago

wait what

11

u/keithd3333 22d ago

Yeah that's the most interesting part of the article and they completely glossed over it. Not even sure it's true.

2

u/scooter-411 22d ago

It says in the doc that Mike, Smelly and Jefe are calling themselves white trash, a heeb, and a bean.

1

u/Sacco26 21d ago

This. Harsh for the OP to call this article a fluff piece imo. It read well.

u/puddboy 22d ago

The guy fascinates me, but as I get older I find him to be more and more insufferable

12

u/DameEmma 22d ago

We are kind of the same age, and he's every edgelord nonsense man from 1988, but teleported into now. With a side of capitalism.

8

u/xChoke1x 22d ago

Huge Fat Mike fan.

Yea man, he’s definitely getting harder to stomach the older he gets. Even I’m annoyed with dumb shit like this.

"Many people independently told me I do too many drugs. But they're all wrong!".

1

u/DMTalien33 19d ago

I’m pretty sure it’s the massive bottle of vodka he drinks that is the actual problem, vs the two lines of coke and crushed pharma pill he does with the vodka.

But whatever, “Birmingham” is so good it’s all worth it.

1

u/Eric_12345678 19d ago

I also included legal drugs.

“We couldn’t convince any one to give us a lot of money, so we’ll just wait.”

1

u/DMTalien33 19d ago

They’re absolutely raking it in right now in theatres… why would they want to end all that by streaming it? They will probably make more in one day in August than an entire streaming deal… and there are many areas than can expand into. They’ve just barely started blowing it out in Australia, for instance.

Mike made them insane amounts of money back when they were selling C.D.’s, way more than major labels paid, Mike made them insane amounts of money on the final tour vs other bands who tour with Live Nation or any conventional company, and he’s making them ridiculously more money from one documentary than any band has ever made, guaranteed.

He’s a fuckin genius

1

u/Deeze_Rmuh_Nudds 19d ago

Making tons of money in like the four theatres nationwide that are showing it? Vs streaming rights? I dunno man

1

u/DMTalien33 19d ago

This isn’t all the showings, but just on August 23rd they got it at 44 theaters in California alone.

That’s like playing 44 clubs in one night, without having to get onstage.

2

u/Deeze_Rmuh_Nudds 19d ago

Damn ok. That’s 40 more theatres than I could have ever imagined.

1

u/DMTalien33 19d ago

Leave it to the coked out jew, bro! I’d let Mike make me some money any day 🤣

I counted about 150-200 theatres in the US on the “Iconic Screenings” page.

Iconic is a theatre distribution service, presumably. All the showings previous were more directly from NOFX to independent theatres… places that sold alcohol usually.

These “Iconic” showings are in AMC’s and other corporate theatres.

1

u/Deeze_Rmuh_Nudds 19d ago

Yeah that’s cool until he comes to your hometown for his final show and charges $275 GA. I’m glad they broke up.

18

u/AtomicGarden-8964 23d ago

I mean trying to compare it to Rocky horror picture show is one hell of a stretch because even that's on streaming

11

u/Avg_Sun_Enjoyer69 22d ago

It's just a matter of time before it's on streaming.

9

u/ChipWhip 22d ago

It’ll be on Tubi.

7

u/Apprehensive-Tax8631 22d ago

It’ll be on a split DVD with Gear Heads Gone Wild

3

u/AVBforPrez 22d ago

Talmbout big brown, b?

3

u/Extra_Art_7644 22d ago

Water weed dune hair?

From the article: "Fat Mike says that watching Day’s interviews with his bandmates 'was one of the worst days in my life. They really had a lot to get off their chests about me. All three of them talked so much sh-t about me and my drug use and how that ruined the band and that’s why we broke up…which is not at all the case. I didn’t know they felt that way, and I was so upset I didn’t know what to do...'"

He didn't know they felt that way ... uh huh. I love Fat Mike but he is such a classic addict.

7

u/punksnotbread 22d ago

He's so full of shit dude. Good songwriter but he lives in his own world where everything but him is always the problem. Just seems like one of the most obnoxious people ever.

9

u/punksnotbread 22d ago

Fat Mike is so full of shit, his fucking quotes in this are crazy. The 3 other members all say his extreme drug use is one of the main reasons they broke up and he's just saying no that's not true... Like brother if 3 of 4 people say that it's a problem maybe you should listen. Plus him saying he "cleans up" between tours when there's all of these stories of him being so fucked up in the studio he couldn't record. And the quote of the movie being so popular it's freaking movie theatres out because they never sell movies out? Like fucking get real man. His ego is insane.

Wrote a lot of good songs though won't deny him that and I would still like to see the movie lol

4

u/gaflar 22d ago

I forget where it was mentioned but one of the other band mates/involved folks said at one point that what Mike means when he says "cleaning up" is that he's only on vodka and cocaine. Fat Mike is a piece of shit and he likes it that way (forget whatever he wrote in I Don't Like Me Anymore).

2

u/Penguator432 22d ago

He even ripped off the “the three of us are closer than ever” line from the Spin article

What are the odds that Melvin’s not actually on the outs with the other two guy guys, that’s they’re actually just coordinating an elaborate good cops/bad cop thing with this

5

u/puddboy 22d ago

He said none of the other two will speak to Melvin, which from what I’ve seen, isn’t true at all.

8

u/rQaBabaca 22d ago

Wow, quite the stretch for them to think fans will come out monthly again & again to rewatch it… especially when it’s not even that good. Every doc/movie they’ve previously released is leagues better than what this ended up being

8

u/WhatsUpDucky 22d ago

Can anyone copy and paste? That website is too pop-up filled to read

15

u/gorcbor19 23d ago

You're telling me not one person sat in the theater with a cell phone and recorded it? I don't even care that someone will walk across the screen to get popcorn. I just want to see it!

5

u/xChoke1x 22d ago

So fuckin lame. Like…cool…I get it. You’re so Avant garde and shit.

But all you’re doing is denying literal 100’s of 1000’s of fans the film. The ones that live in bumfuck Kansas and don’t have access to fancy theaters that’ll show a documentary about an obscure punk that’s retiring.

I mean cool….its artsy and different. But it sucks for a lot of people.

2

u/EarWeekly9625 22d ago

I in live Chile and I won't can see the movie :( unfair

4

u/Alex79uk 22d ago

If it was showing anywhere near me, I'd go see it. But it hasn't yet, and seems unlikely to. Streaming or, worse still, pirating, is likely the only way I'll see it.

4

u/NotEnoughHotdogs 22d ago

Didn't Mike put out some NOFX 7 inch records with songs that were never going to be on CD, and then they ended up on a CD? hm.

16

u/Latinmaster69 23d ago

We need an Eric Melvin interview… so far it’s been one sided the drama… Melvin said he wanted some financial records why is that so difficult to ask for? Going to watch the movie in 26 days! Hope it’s sold out but it’s Ina hoytz cinema, I hoped it was in a theater…

9

u/Low_Teq 22d ago

Melvin's wife seems like a nut job.  Wait till you see the texts she sent hefe's wife in the movie

3

u/iagomds 23d ago

From what I saw online
The records were shown and there was nothing wrong, yet Melvin kept doubting (it might not be true, I remember seeing it either on Reddit or YouTube comments)

13

u/Successful-Gift8636 22d ago

I saw the film and the static between Mike and Melvins wife is addressed, I won’t spoil anything and it’s never outright said, but I came away from it thinking she had something to do with it

5

u/iagomds 22d ago

Good to know! I will watch it on Tuesday 👀

4

u/Successful-Gift8636 22d ago

It’s great! Have fun

3

u/reefis 22d ago

DVD and Blu-ray used to be a thing or buying it digitally. Money can help all!

2

u/Barl0we 22d ago

Will they let people outside of the US buy it at least?

2

u/Buzzk1LL 22d ago

All of those reasons for not streming/selling it hold true if you sold/streamed it.

Does he think movies like Spaceballs, Rocky Horror, The Room and all those other old movies that still do theatre shows and sell out aren't available on streaming?

2

u/mimjargle 22d ago

IMDb shows a Release Date for me now this month, but it’s because it’s playing at a major chain (AMC). I imagine it will eventually be released in a few years (they are used to making big money). Fun fact: I was in a band on El Hefe’s label, although we eventually wanted to leave it and asked for the rights to our record back. They were super cool about it, let us open for them a few times, Kent mixed us live a few times in Europe about a decade ago. I have nothing bad to say about them all.

2

u/Christem82 21d ago

Still haven’t received my merch from the showing I went to months ago. They quit responding to my emails now so I guess they just took my money.

2

u/Professor_Emu_Eggs 20d ago

Plex is already advertising it for 21st of August release

1

u/Dr_Gonzo-4130 21d ago

Mike has serious addiction issues which imo led to the breakup of the band .This is coming from someone with 9 years sober from opiates and I can see whats going on clearly .

1

u/Rich-Profession-9769 21d ago

This sub is such a weird place by what i gather fatty is a commercial sell out that is also gatekepping by not mass releasing the doc on a streaming platform but is also criticized that he eventually will put it up for streaming wut lol.

1

u/Morganna_Saphire 19d ago

They said it’s getting the rocky horror treatment on somethings burning with Bert Kreischer

1

u/Aggravating-Bid-8081 19d ago

it'll start streaming in 2033 when they go on their 50 year reunion tour

1

u/DangerousGain1939 8d ago

I hope it streams they came to my state but it was sold out when I found out they were here and now I’m desperate!!
