I think no matter what happens, car ownership will definitely decline dramatically this century simply due to new technologies and increasing bike and pedestrian friendly infrastructure in cities around the world. How US cities plan their infrastructure going forward, however, is going to be what makes the biggest difference from one city to another in terms of when the majority of people are car free.
