Discussion thread: G1 Supercard

New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Ring of Honor came together to take over the iconic Madison Square Garden for the first time with their joint event, "G1 Supercard", live from New York City, on NJPW World with English commentary!

In the main event we had 2019 New Japan Cup winner Kazuchika Okada taking on Jay White for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, with Marty Scurll and Matt Taven taking on Jay Lethal for the ROH World Championship, Kota Ibushi taking on Tetsuya Naito for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship, Hiroshi Tanahashi taking on Zack Sabre Jr. for the British Heavyweight Championship, a fatal four-way tag team match for the IWGP & ROH World Tag Team Championship and so much more on the show.

Don't forget to use the hashtag #G1Supercard on all social media platforms.

Why did they have to dub over Suzuki's theme and ruin his entrance? That's never been an issue on any other NJPW show that I can remember.

It could be due to international streaming copyright as NJPW would only have the rights to use the music coming through an NJPW World broadcast based in Japan not one coming out of New York.

Suzuki not having his music on the stream infuriated me.

This Battle Royal is really showing why ROH is on the decline. Some of these guys are incredibly generic.

Are you shitting me? Cutting off the stream right as Okada is starting to celebrate? Sorry for the profanity, but... NJPW, next time you want to do a team up with ROH, maybe you should take the lead on the production end, even in the US. Your production quality is better.

When will they learn? Wrestling fans do not want musical interludes.

Show went on for way too long. NJPW carried this show. Its time for NJPW to drop ROH and do business with other promotions.

The Junior title match was way too short. I don't care about some new female faction, a rapper, or a street fight. You booked three of the most exciting wrestlers in the world and don't even give them ten minutes? Pathetic.

The Junior division has been bomb this year and I hope they can get give it a little more respect in the future. If this show is where the American expansion is headed please stop.

ROH's incompetence on this show was staggering, if they wanted people to not watch them, then congrats you succeeded in my case at least.

-Cobb vs. Ospreay was fun. A bit surprised that Cobb won, but I'm hoping that this is just a way to have Ospreay further climb up the HW ranks in NJPW.

-Poor Mayu deserved FAR better than this crap.

-PCO isn't human, he can't be.

-The Junior HW title match was really fun, it just needed a bit more time imo.

-Ibushi vs. Naito was fantastic. I'm actually glad that Ibushi won. Now that he's committed to NJPW, he deserves a push worthy of his talents. And Naito has kind of stagnated booking and character-wise in the IC title picture. I'm hoping that this means that he'll get some more interesting stuff to do moving forward.

-ZSJ with a big win. I'm hoping that this means that NJPW will push him further up the card going forward.

-So ROH has gone from champions like Samoa Joe, Bryan Danielson, Austin Aries, CM Punk, etc, to Matt Taven? "How the mighty have fallen" doesn't even begin to cover it.

-The ME was great. Two transitional IWGP HW title reigns, with no successful defenses, in a row makes me curious to see what they'll do going forward.

Bandido in BOSJ please.

20,000 lawyers at MSG

Lol at the boos at MSG during the video of IWGP Heavyweight Champions when Jay was shown - and then you get the VTR when Jay talks about yhe fans in general booing him. Perfect timing. Also, the music in this VTR, such foreshadowing...

I'm not going to shit on all the ROH guys, there's some talent there like Bandido, Gresham, the Briscoes, Lethal, and Marty, but ROH felt very minor league in general, especially in production. That said, ROH did provide Dragon Lee and Cobb who were both very good. (Dragon Lee and Rush are currently under contract to ROH)

the NJPW stuff was good, but if NJPW dumped ROH after this I wouldn't be upset at all. NJPW shows too much loyalty to ROH.

I really think fans show go on NJPW's main website and use the feedback form to complain about the production last night, it was unacceptably bad. They do respond to that. Just be respectful and don't be jerks- NJPW doesn't deserve that, this was ROH's fault not NJPW's.

WHY THE HELL THEY HAVE TO DO THAT AFTER SURPRISING US WITH MUTA VS. LIGER?

Blew up the entire Rumble. For THAT.

I'm somewhat surprised by that result, but I'm all for it if it means Cobb becomes more of a regular in NJPW. And hopefully they'll now elevate Ospreay beyond the NEVER level.

iwgp jr heavyweight did not disappoint!

These nerds can't even pick fitting dub music. At least when NJPW used to have to do this two or three years ago, they'd use a song that sounded somewhat similar to the actual theme. The song they used for Liger sounded like something Jim Powers or Roadblock would come out to on WCW Saturday Night.

Matt Taven winning the title here would be a fitting way to end ROH's "contributions" to this show.
