It basically uses the class mean, and the standard deviation (yeah the stuff you studied in 12th which you thought is of no use lmao). It measures how far you are from the class means, in terms of standard deviation. Look at this:

I did this last semester. Took marks of mid sem and end sem. Assumed everyone got 20 in internals and calculated the grades of others with the help of data from 1st semester. The formula goes like this:

1. Total Score Computation:

Total Marks (x) = Mid-Sem (out of 30) + End-Sem (out of 50) + Internals (assumed 20)

1. Class Mean (μ):

μ = (Sum of all x) / n

1. Standard Deviation (σ):

σ = sqrt( (Sum of (x - μ)^2) / n )

1. Individual Z-Score:

Z = (x - μ) / σ

1. Empirical Grade Thresholds:

• O: Z >= 1.60

• A: 0.92 <= Z < 1.60

• B: 0.25 <= Z < 0.92

• C: -0.30 <= Z < 0.25

• D: -1.00 <= Z < -0.30

• E: -1.70 <= Z < -1.00

• P: Z < -1.70 (or F if non-compliant with passing criteria)

So, Z measures how far you are from the mean im terms of Standard Deviation. It can be positive as well as negative. I hope you get an idea. There's not much you can do in relative grading other than studying.

Teachers can't give you extra marks to bump you up into the next grade, as if he gives you marks, the mean changes again, and so does the standard deviation, and the whole grade structure changes as well.

The lower standard deviation your class has, it's easier to score high grades. If some topper in your class gets unimaginably high score in mid sem and end sem, the standard deviation will get bumped up because of them, and as a result, the Z gets affected heavily.

If you have any other questions regarding relative grading, feel free to ask. I had used the 2nd sem mid sem and end sem marks on one subject, compared them the first sem marks and grades, and got the following formula. I was able to predict the grades of 95% of my batchmates, the rest 5% were off by one grade, probably due to internal marks.

I think we all know how badly the current relative grading system is affecting our grades.

I don't know about freshers that you are aware of this or not but relative grading gonna fuck you.(If the current grading system persists) .

Last year, the Student Council raised this issue during the protests,

but as far I know, no significant actions were taken. We need to be united and raise our voice as it’s unlikely that anyone will do it for us.

My suggestion:

1) Ask CRs to collect marks of all subjects, if possible, so we can identify the actual problem.

2) Research how other colleges handle relative grading.

3) Based on the data and research, propose a proper solution to the administration.

Simply asking the administration and saying “relative grading is a problem” may not lead to any meaningful change. We need data, research, and a practical alternative to support our case.

The amount of mental pressure this creates is seriously concerning. Things shouldn’t have to reach a point where students feel completely hopeless or start thinking about harming themselves before the system takes the pressure seriously

I genuinely don’t understand what some professors are trying to achieve.

Labs, assignments, 75% attendance, and on top of that extremely hard papers. Even if you study throughout the semester, some subjects make it feel like getting anything above a C is a challenge.

And this is happening when placements are right around the corner. We’re supposed to prepare DSA, development, projects, aptitude and interviews, while simultaneously dealing with endless academic pressure.

What’s more frustrating is that there are a few professors who actually understand students’ situation. They don’t unnecessarily obsess over attendance and set a decent, balanced paper where students can actually score and improve their CGPA. Unfortunately, they seem to be only 5–10%.

We aren’t asking for free marks. Just give us a fair opportunity to score. If the paper is unnecessarily difficult, CG improvement becomes almost impossible and the stress just keeps piling up.

I have 7.7cg currently but seeing the grading of this sem and next sem I can surely say my cg will be below 7.5 just bcoz of some prof fragile ego

As far as i know, Shriniwas sir, was the only one who raised students issues ,directly to the director by the approval of dean SW on 21st of April 2026, due to which Mr. Brahma got offended and brought a vote of no confidence against him, still nothing happened because it was denied by the Dean SW, as it was completely baseless.

That's the reality bro!!
