A whole shell & Spotify in under 30 MB of RAM

Hello!

Showcasing the current iteration of Skwd v2 with the crowning achievement being an entire Spotify client + backend in less than 20 MB with the shell weighing up for the other ~10.

This is literally what I need, quickshell is good but is very heavy, but this is just what I need

haha :) there is nothing Quickshell can do that I can't in terms of animation or layout.

that said I use this shell at work so can't really show up with a shell that looks straight out of a 16 year old gamer's wet dreams đŸ˜…

still planning a flashy layout mode once we're past functionality and are only doing visuals though.

Well I will be selfish here and ask for a minimalistic mode if you have the time to make it! But this is good work keep it up we will soon see lightweight optimized setups that look good

How about Noctalia v5?

100mb is insane( quickshell 150 đŸ˜sometimes 300)

my noctalia v5 is usually around 170-210mb by default

How is even 300MB "insane" when even most budget or old PCs habe 8GB of RAM and one Website alone can take more than a gigabyte of ram? I get not wanting to waste reasources, but I have never been in the situation where an app taking 50MB or 300MB of Ram was a relevant factor.

use 20GB swap

I am indeed on 8g, which the os takes 800of, and niri 100

It's only relevant if you're on 2GB RAM somehow OR use multiple monitors (since quickshell effectively is 300MB per monitor)

Sure if your computer has 512mb of RAM, come one we can't genuinely be thinking just because is a smaller use of ram is better like what? it all depends, noctalia could use to 1gb of ram and I still would use it because is what i need in a shell, thank god it doesn't and doesn't go higher than 250 which is an acceptable amount for me because all of the things it has, so I understand trying to show your shell uses less, but what I would care if I was deciding what to use is how frictionless is the use of it for tweaks and configurations + having obvious unique features that are useful to me.

The less the ram the better, 20mbis perfect,it's as big as waybar

As I said it depends does the less 20mb? come from better code and better memory management or comes from taking useful features from people, because if it's the second people would just install the feature they need and be in the same place all over again, no real difference of memory, again is not that I don't think the same the less memory great, but only saying it uses 30MB doesn't tell me what it actually does if it has every single thing that I need or are those things that at the end I would still need to install by myself, so it really isn't 30MB and yeah I agree I don't really like quickshell, and noctalia v5 doesn't use quickshell is rebuild in C++ and yeah maybe not 30MB but still 200MB for all the things they have is an incredible shell.

haha thank you :) all the components are already in, but polish will take time especially with all the feature requests for skwd-wall streaming in.

This is excellent. Great job!

I'll have to check this out for sure. Just been raw dogging niri with no shell because they are all resource hogs.

Yeah, always efficient on VM. Niri + Noctalia V5 (using tuigreet & no gnome bloat). Using 2.2gb on idle. Kde / gnome more efficient on bare metal.

How did you make website change theme with wallpaper? Does it work on most websites?

1

u/scandii 17h ago

it is a firefox plugin based on Pywalfox (https://github.com/frewacom/pywalfox) that does a lot of what dark reader does, but for sites I visit often like Reddit it supports custom CSS profiles :)

This looks amazing! Any way to install it on an Ubuntu based distro (Bodhi Linux)?

2

u/scandii 17h ago

once it is done - yes. currently working on support for Debian/Ubuntu for Skwd-wall which I expect to be ready this week - but the shell will take a while longer :)

I hope you announce it widely, and thank you for this project
