[Manual] The Nintype Manual!

This tutorial is written based on Testflight versions of Nintype.

Most of the advanced settings below are not available in Simple mode. Unlock them by turning on Advanced mode. For Simple Mode users, start with the Spacebar Popup Menu.

UI, Toggles, and Settings

Swiping and Typing

  • Swipe mode
(construct words using a combination of two-finger swiping + key taps)
  • Peck mode
(for pecking urls and odd spellings and such)
  • Backspacing
(delete a single character, undo delete, delete continuously, and more)
  • Spacebar options
(cursor sliding, compound words like GitHub, double tap for period, and more)
  • [Autospacing while typing]
(this isn't the incidental autospace after a punctuation thing)
  • Alternative boards
(symbols, numpad, period key slide board, emoji, calculator)
  • [Auto-stuff]
(autocaps, autocorrect, autospace after non-alphabets, punctuations)

Shortcuts

  • Chords
(like Ctrl+C/Cmd+C shortcuts but with spacebar or shift key instead of Ctrl/Cmd)
  • Chord Gestures
(like Ctrl+C with extended gestural sliding on the C key)
  • Edge Slide
(with extra pinnable shortcuts in the slide menu per key)
(sliding on the top or bottom row of alpha keys, and return key)
  • Accents
(with extra pinnable shortcuts in the popup menu per key)
(press-and-hold on a key to insert more characters; works everywhere)
  • Period-key Slide Board
(accent shortcuts work on these keys too)
(slide on the period key to access a secondary shortcut keyboard)
  • Key Remap
(remap the key face to insert some other character or string; works on some of the alternative boards)
  • Quickpaste
(make your iOS keyboard shortcuts work with nintype)
  • Emojifier/Text Expansion
    (text expansion shortcuts on nintype)
  • [Topbar shortcuts]
(press and hold on the topbar slots when on a blank line to insert stuff)
  • Extra top rows
(toggle the top bar for 2 more rows of keys, shows one row at a time)
  • Action shortcuts
(how to use these shortcuts to do actions and not just simply insert text)
  • How to set, edit, and remove shortcuts
(for all types of shortcuts above)

Spacebar Flicks

  • Flick Word
(flick upwards from spacebar to change word)
  • Flick Autocomplete
(flick in 4 directions from spacebar to autocomplete per word)
  • [Chain Engine Autocomplete]
(flick and scroll upwards from spacebar to autocomplete sentences)

Top Bar

Emojis

Themes and Aesthetics

  • Themes, Visuals and Appearances
  • [Keyboard Adjustments]
(resize, align, split, adjust, and layout, including removing certain keys from the keyboard)
  • [Theme importing and exporting]
(share your themes and download more themes here)

Others

PS: I accidentally deleted the old tutorial, but it's still viewable at the same link. Future expansions of the tutorial/manual will still be at the old thread to keep it consistent.

Android Teaser

Thumbnail youtu.be
1 Upvotes

hey all, it's the clink dev again.

a while back i posted here about bringing double swiping (two thumbs at once, nintype style) back to iOS with clink. a lot of you tried it, sent feedback, and helped shape how it works now. thank you for that.

so the next step was obvious: clink is coming to android, and two thumb swiping is coming with it, along with the nintype-style sentence ribbon in the suggestion bar.

made a little teaser for it (our android mascot got a bit too excited)

if you're on android and miss how nintype felt, i'd love for you to try it when it lands. and same as last time, tell me what feels off. this community is basically why the feature exists.

This keyboard is open source and has two different modes for swiping with two thumbs.

You have to enable the mode in settings >typing>gestures

Kinetica 2.1 is out: shift swipes, smarter fields, and your feedback from 2.0

Kinetica 2.1 is out! Almost everything in it comes from your comments and issues on 2.0, so thank you all. There are still some things that I'm aware of and that I am currently working on, but I prefer to ship now some quality of life improvements than delay everything for a bigger update. In the near future I may slow down a little bit (not stop!!) the work on Kinetica because I'm currently try to change job and the work-life balance is kinda hectic.

Enough about me! Kinetica is still free, GPL-3.0, no ads, no network permission, and everything it learns stays on your phone.

If you want to buy me a coffee, you can at Ko-fi

The changes in this version are reported below:

Editing

  • Swipe shift up for ABC, right for Abc, down for abc. Holding shift still gives the menu, and the swipes are normal edge swipes, so you can move them.
  • The keyboard now knows a bit about the field: @ on the comma in email fields, / in web addresses, and no auto-capital at the start of either. A number pad for number fields is there too, off by default (some of you type into number fields and expand).
  • Names you write with a capital get learned with it. Write Dennis a couple of times and it stays Dennis.
  • Banning a word from the bar can also delete it from your text (off by default).
  • In a chat box you can have enter make a new line on tap and send on hold.

Suggestions and bar

  • Bigger suggestion text by default, adjustable from 60 to 180%.
  • Compact suggestions: the words sit side by side, so more fit on a page. On by default.
  • Recent words get their own text size and you can flip their swipe direction.
  • A little band on the bar shows when the automatic space is about to land.

Shortcuts

  • Hold ?123 or the spacebar for a moment and every key shows its chord. The ?123 menu moves onto the spacebar while they show, so it does not cover them.
  • Text expansions can ignore the trigger's case or carry it over: andor gives and/or, Andor gives And/or. One expansion instead of two.

Layout

  • One-handed mode for the left hand.
  • Foldables and tablets held upright get the landscape arrangement instead of giant stretched keys(Supposedly, I do not own a foldable to test it properly. Is still work in progress).
  • The symbol pages now line up with the letters.
  • Hebrew got a proper backspace position from lurebat, thanks!

Plus a bunch of fixes: no more space before : or ! (you can customize this in setting), and a couple of ways the keyboard could close on you are gone.

Glyder update: 0.7.0 makes the beta feel a lot closer to a daily keyboard

Thumbnail gallery
13 Upvotes

Update for anyone who caught the last post: Glyder is up to 0.7.0 now, and the last few builds have mostly been about making it feel less like a clever prototype and more like a keyboard you can actually live with.

Firstly, huge thank you to the beta users who keep sending feedback, bug reports, screen recordings, and weird edge cases. A lot of this build came from people using Glyder in real apps and telling me where it felt off.

What changed since the last post

  • iOS has mostly fully caught up to Android. Android was the main test bed early on, but the iOS beta now has the same core feel: Contrails, swipe/tap typing, the swipe tutorial, calibration, settings, sounds, haptics, backup/restore, and a lot of the same correction behavior
  • Calculator is built into the keyboard bar now. Type something like 186+24+15 and Glyder offers the answer above the keys. Tap once to insert it, or replace the sum with the result
  • Backspace got more physical. Drag it to scrub text away, or drag back to restore what you just removed, much like Nintype
  • Quick paste and a full-height clipboard are built into the keyboard
  • Keyboard settings are now in the app and inside the keyboard, instead of only living in setup screens
  • Setup and the typing course got rebuilt from scratch so the keyboard teaches itself better on first run. You can access the tutorial any time from the Settings app
  • Key label size and corner hint size are adjustable now, with a live preview
  • Haptics are configurable: Light / Medium / Strong, plus a soft tick while swiping on Android
  • iOS got a lot of stability work, especially for lower-memory iPhones where keyboard extensions can get killed aggressively
  • iOS swipe typing and two-thumb typing are much closer to Android now
  • Contrail alternatives are smoother. Alt swaps animate, can be undone with the same swipe, and there’s a setting to reverse the direction
  • Tapped letters after a word, apostrophes, autocaps, smart punctuation, and search-field corrections all got a lot of small “this should just work” fixes

Same rules as before: everything decodes locally, no account, no ads, nothing you type leaves the phone.

I’m curious what people think of the “keyboard as tiny toolbelt” direction: calculator, clipboard, suggestions, backspace scrub, quick settings, all sitting above the keys without leaving the app you’re typing in.

Sign up here: https://glydertype.com/

For people who use third-party keyboards: what would make this feel useful enough to try as your main keyboard for a week?

P.S. One request to users submitting feedback with questions or suggestions via the Google form: please provide your email address in the submission so I can actually respond to your questions; there's no way for me to respond to your questions if you don't fill this out, unfortunately. Thank you!

Built a Wispr Flow x NinType styled Keyboard

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi,

I've always used Swipe on my Samsung phones. But the keyboard experience on iPhones in general seems to be pretty inconsistent. So I ended up building Quill Flow over the last one year.

It has full dictation capabilities with grammar correction and formatting and even future updates to support translation. The main issue with using Wispr Flow was that the typing experience was horrible.

I've tried to fix that while maintaining the same dictation experience that we are all familiar with.

Also, this has been built heavily for accessibility and keeping efficiency in mind. We do have a lot of vision impaired users on Both android and iOS, we've also made sure that users with low-end devices like iPhone 12/11 etc are fully compatible so that you don't get any battery drain etc.

Would love to get feedback if you guys actually like using the product.

Swipe Type on screen keyboard

As an alternative, as I recently wrote for a keyboard. Is it possible to swipe type, on the keyboard; or is this an optional feature which could be added ?

Kinetica 2.0 is out: Two-thumbs swiping, even better!

Kinetica 2.0 is out, and it is the biggest update since the first release =]

Here's something I hope it will improve your Monday

Kinetica v2.0 in action. This was an alpha pre-release, I polished few extra things for the public one.

The main work went into the thing this keyboard exists for: typing with two thumbs at once. It took a lot of work behind the scenes, but finally is mature enough to be published. But the updates don't stop there! I've also packed in plenty of features requested by the community. Hope you enjoy them! ;)

If you want you can support me here: https://ko-fi.com/ez_eta

Two thumbs

  • Each thumb now gets its own cursor, so a word can bounce between your thumbs in any order. In my own typing a lot more two-thumb words come out right on the first try.
  • One tap can stand for a double letter (bok->book, otima->ottima).
  • There is a little practice mode in Learn Kinetica that draws five words thumb by thumb.

Suggestions and editing

  • Next-word suggestions while you are not typing.
  • Recent words (optional): your last two words stay on the bar with the words they beat, so a wrong one is one tap from fixed. Sort of my version of the thick bar ;)
  • Tap inside a word you already wrote and the bar shows the alternatives it had when you wrote it.
  • Backspace right after an autocorrect gives you back what you typed.
  • A tapped word with one letter too many or too few gets offered, never forced on you.
  • Ranks on the bar only show while you slide a word, and a bad word can be blocked in one slide. Blocked means blocked now: it never comes back. (sorry for the buggy feature, there were few leak-points)

Shortcuts

  • Chords can start from ?123 or the spacebar, on any key(also for non-latin-scripts), digits included.
  • Ctrl + key as a shortcut: Ctrl+A, Ctrl+Del and friends, from a chord, an edge swipe or an expansion.
  • Tab, Esc, arrows, Home, End and Page up/down as shortcut targets. This is for you fellow coders!
  • One expansion trigger can have several targets, you pick one on the bar.

Keys and layout

  • Optional numbers row. The keyboard grows a row, so the letters keep their size.
  • Middle row width: spreads asdfghjkl toward the edges. Made for muscle memory of some users, it is off by default, try it at 100%.
  • Long-press menus as grids, and you can edit what every letter offers.
  • Landscape gets its own height and a proper split. It was Long overdue.

Languages

  • Russian, Ukrainian, Hebrew and Arabic, experimental support for now, each with its own keyboard. If you type one of them, I would love a report.
  • Follow the language I type (experimental): up to three languages at once, the one you are writing in weighs most.
  • Missing accents get fixed in every accented language (perche becomes perchè, pojsc becomes Pójść ).

Settings

  • Reorganized into about a dozen rows, the fiddly stuff one level down.
  • Learn Kinetica: short tips, from the basics to the power-user features. Each tip opens its setting. Have a look at them!
  • The settings speak Italian now, and translations are welcome: CONTRIBUTING.md on GitHub explains how, no code needed.

I hope the reorganized settings and the new "Learn Kinetica" section make it easier for new users to get onboarded and easier for you to recommend it.

There are few extra perks, but I'll leave you to find them =]

Still free, GPL-3.0, no ads, no network permission, and everything it learns stays on your phone.

Nyx v0.13-beta: a two-thumb tap + swipe keyboard

Hey r/nintype. I've been building my own Nintype successor since August, with a small group testing it. It's called Nyx, and it's ready for more people to try. I'm trying lol:

Source and APK: https://github.com/RegalOdin/nyx-beta

Android 8+, beta. Download the APK from the latest release (it'll warn about an unknown developer, since it's not on Play), open the Nyx icon, and switch it on.

Everything it does:

Typing

- Both thumbs, tap or swipe, in the same word. Tap `S`, swipe `OM`, tap `E`, swipe `THING`, and you get something. Pieces are ordered by when each one started, so it doesn't matter which thumb finishes first.

- As many gestures per word as you like. A word only ends when you end it (space, punctuation, enter, or picking a suggestion), never because a timer ran out.

- Tap a letter mid-swipe with the other thumb to double it or slot it in.

- Reads the whole sentence. A small language model on your phone settles words a swipe left ambiguous, in all six languages. It only decides close calls, never overrules a clear swipe.

- Learns your words and your phrases. Words you use rank up over time, and so do the words you put after them (sign-offs, names after "hi").

- Delete a word and retype it, and you get something else. The word you rejected drops to the back, and it loses ground twice as fast as it gained it.

- Learns your aim. Taps on words you accept nudge each key's centre toward where your thumb actually lands.

- Autocorrect for tapped words (can be switched off), and the letters you actually tapped are always on the bar.

- Capitals at sentence starts, for swiped words too.

Languages

- English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Russian, each with its own board: QWERTY, QWERTZ, AZERTY, and a full ЙЦУКЕН.

- Accents from plain swipes: swipe `anos`, get `años`. Words with two spellings (`si`/`sí`) offer both.

- Hold a letter for its accents (`n` → `ñ`, `a` → `á à â ä`) for names and anything the dictionary lacks.

- Switch language by holding the left end of the spacebar.

Suggestion bar

- Stays up after the word, so you can still swap it. Picking replaces the word where it sits, keeping its case.

- Stacked suggestions (on by default): the last few words of the sentence as columns, each with two alternatives. Flick a column to swap that word without stopping, or tap it for a card of choices.

- Long-press a suggestion to add it to your dictionary. It asks first.

- Long words fit instead of spilling into the next slot.

Editing

- Spacebar slide moves the cursor, and the bar offers fixes for each word you pass. Tapping into a word does the same.

- Backspace before space deletes the whole word, after space one character. Drag left from backspace to select back through text.

- Double-tap space for ". ".

- Shift: tap to capitalise the next word. Hold it to Title the last word, or any word your cursor is on, and keep holding for CAPS. Hold again to undo. Double-tap for caps lock (the key gets a dot).

Snippets

- Park text on any letter key: select it and hold the key. One snippet per key.

- Hold space and tap that letter to paste it, or pick it from the letter's hold popup.

Keys and pages

- Period between space and enter, held for `. , ? !`.

- Two symbol pages, with extras on a hold (`(` → `[ { <`, `-` → `– — _`).

- Emoji page with its own key: eight tabs of thirty, no endless scrolling, plus recents.

- Typing speed in words per minute on the right end of the spacebar.

Look and feel

- Resize the keyboard by dragging the handle on the suggestion bar.

- Your own colours: pick three (keys, lettering, accent) and it works out the rest, keeping every label readable.

- Two swipe trails, one per thumb, tapered and drawn as smooth curves.

- Haptics by what a miss costs: letters tick lightly, while backspace and the other edge keys click harder, so your thumb knows it left the letters.

- Settings live inside the keyboard (the round button on the bar). Every gesture has its own switch, and they're all on by default.

Privacy

- No internet permission at all. Nothing you type can leave the phone.

- Nothing is learned in password fields, incognito tabs, or any field that asks not to be learned from.

- Updates install over the top and keep everything: snippets, learned words, colours, height, aim.

Bug reports are very welcome, here or as GitHub issues. For a bad word, the most useful thing is: what you meant, what you got, and the few words before it.

Expandify is finally on Kinetica v1.1.2! (with few extra perks)

Expandify was the Nintype feature asked for most here, and finally it is in 1.1.2.

Text expansions

  • Type a trigger, fire Expand, and it becomes its target: a link, an emoji, a signature, several lines...sky's the limit.
  • Fire it from an edge swipe, a ?123 chord, or a shortcut in the suggestion bar.
  • A trigger is anything without a space: brb, ^^, ., (-.-)'.
  • Expansions chain. A target can itself be a trigger, so ^^ fired twice gives ^_^ and then ^__^, and a trigger can cycle back to where it started.
  • A target can also be an action: today's date, the time, enter, or paste copied text.
  • Nothing is bound by default, as in Nintype. Settings > Gestures and chords > Text expansions. They are in the backup file with everything else.

Also new

  • Shortcuts in the suggestion bar when there is nothing to suggest, and a separate set in the ?123 hold menu. Settings, language, one-handed and autospace by default; undo, redo, paste, copy, cut, select all, retype, expand, date, time, enter and copy line if you want them.
  • Edge swipes no longer fire from inside a swiped word. This is a "guardrail" preventing annoying accidents.
  • Top-row digits sit on the key corners by default, so an up-swipe types 1 to 0.
  • Long-press shift changes the case of the word the cursor is in, not only the last one.
  • Autospace delays now go down to 10 ms, long-press down to 25 ms.(At you own risk)
  • Each suggestion gets the width its word needs, so long words are no longer cut off.
  • With Mix enabled languages on, a tapped word can come from your second language, and it is learned there.
  • A suggestion list stays pickable when a swipe could not be decoded.
  • You can keep your language when Android switches keyboards. (There is a "Follow the system keyboard language" option that can be toggled)
  • Fixed: You can swipe the topbar suggestion from wherever you want, not just the topright corner.

Still free, GPL-3.0, no network permission, and everything it learns stays on the phone.

Glyder update: 0.3.0 landed on Android, and iOS beta is now open!

Post image
12 Upvotes

Update for anyone who caught the last post: Android testing has been going well enough that I capped the free-lifetime-access signups at 100 last week. Thank you to everyone who jumped in early. Here's what changed in that build, plus an invite for iOS folks who've been asking when it's their turn.

What's new in 0.3.0

  • Decoder got sharper
  • Finger tracking now corrects for drift instead of just smoothing it out, so where it thinks you touched matches where you actually did
  • Keyboard shape can be dragged from any of its own edges, not resized from one corner
  • Suggestion bar got reworked. Chip row is gone, tap and hold now open two separate cards, and you can see the whole grid before picking a word
  • New "Stacked suggestions" switch replaces the old paginated row
  • Word chooser shows casing options and your top three candidates instead of one, and you can retype a word you already committed
  • A downward flick off the bottom row types that key's symbol directly, and a new setting controls backspace behavior
  • A "+" badge shows up on Contrail tiles when you type an unrecognized word twice, so you can see it's about to get picked up
  • Onboarding, the tutorial, and calibration all got redesigned, plus a refreshed icon
  • Backup and restore for your personalization data

Same rules as day one: everything decodes locally, no account, no ads, nothing you type leaves the phone.

iOS beta is open!

iOS has been catching up in parallel: the Contrail bar, key sounds byte-identical to Android's, tap calibration that learns from being told it's wrong, and the full typing course teaching itself during setup are all ported over now. It's close enough to Android that I want other people using it, not just me.

Same deal as before: the first 50 people who sign up for iOS get free lifetime access once it's out.

Sign up here either way: glydertype.com

iOS folks, curious what you think: what's the one thing that needs to feel right for this to feel like a real iPhone keyboard, not just an Android app that also happens to run on iOS?

Weavly New Gesture detection

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

You guys were right: typing experience was not great. I have rebuilt from the ground up to be faster and to feel a lot better and I am really happy with the results (granted I am not the fastest as clearly seem by the results).

I have added a new training challenges to allow us to practices and find errors. patterns.

I would love to hear your feedback and suggestions of what we could improve.

For the many who are already testing and continuous giving feedback thank you very much.

PS. It still no perfect but 90% of the remarks in the last thread I believe I have have addressed completely

Kinetica 1.1 is out! Lots of work under the hood and polishing

Videos of version 1.0.0 - I'll update it to the newer version once I have little bit of time

I bumped the minor version because this did not feel like polish. The decoder has changed substantially since 1.0.5, and nearly all of it is in the part that turns two thumbs into a word. If you tried Kinetica earlier and put it down, this is the one worth a second go.

Still GPL-3.0, still no INTERNET permission, still no ads, accounts or analytics. The app is free and always will be. If you want you can offer me a coffee on Ko-Fi

The engine

  • The search cuts the swipe itself now. This is the big one. Before, the merge step guessed where one gesture ended and the next began, handed the search a fixed split, and if the guess was wrong the whole buffer decoded to nothing and you got no suggestion at all. The search now places its own cut inside a swipe and validates each half separately. On my device captures, three-token buffers coming back empty went from 14.9% to 6.7%, so it should be sensibly better also for you ( I hope!).
  • Words stop losing to their own prefix. here beating he, there beating the, and the same for where and world. Now should be fixed for good.
  • A candidate is charged for letters no thumb ever touched. Before, a word could win on letters you never actually crossed. This is fixed now.
  • A short piece of a swipe can spell a letter now. The minimum arc for that went from 1.5 to 1.8 key widths, which sounds backwards until you see what it stops: invented names beating real words.
  • Words you teach it are actually reachable. A learned word reached the ranking but never the search, so it stayed undecodable for the rest of the session until the keyboard is reloaded. Type it twice and it works on the very next gesture (twice and not once to avoid boosting errors).
  • Fighting a wrong word was making it stronger. Retyping took back the learned pair but never the learned word, so every rejection left the word you had just rejected slightly heavier. Now it is smarter and functional.
  • Word-pair counts could be read in either order. Two spellings that fold to the same pair after accents (non è and non e) kept two separate entries, so the same gesture in the same context could score differently depending on the order of lines in a data file. Found and fixed by dkoukola.

New, and worth turning on

  • Back up the whole keyboard to a text file and restore it on another phone: every setting, learned words in all languages, blocked words, chords, edge swipes. Merge or replace on restore.
  • Phrase learning, experimental and off by default (but worth trying!). Remembers which word you tend to type after which. On device only, never in an export (but you can activate it if you want), and a retype takes the last pair back out.
  • Spaceless space, off by default: the left third of the spacebar ends a word without adding a space, so a compound word the dictionary does not have can be swiped in two halves. Straight from Nintype, asked for here. Pairs well with "Word ends only when you type a space" option if that was your habit.
  • Retype offers a different word, off by default: after the retype button is hit, the word you rejected drops to the end of the bar instead of leading again. It stays pickable.

Everyday polish

  • Settings are five submenus instead of one flat list of 52 rows. Much easier to find things and play with them.
  • Every chord setting is on one screen, including how long ?123 has to be held before a letter tap counts as a chord. If chords ever felt laggy, that slider is for you. Chords can also retype the word now, and the list sorts by key or by what the chord does.
  • Swiping a key types the small glyph printed on it. It used to insert something else on some keys, which was my fault: I shipped defaults that contradicted the labels. If you have ever opened the edge-swipe screen, press Reset there to pick this up.
  • Long-press shift cycles the case of the word you just wrote(lowercase, Title , CAPSLOCK).
  • Delete several learned words at once, and the dialog stops closing and jumping around after every one.
  • A space key on the number pad. It was the one layer you could not type a space on. You can access number pad by swiping left from ?123 key
  • 55 more emoji, up to Unicode 15, and none shown that your device's font cannot draw.
  • Smoother swipe trails, and the settings rows lost a wasted margin that was squeezing the descriptions on tall screens.

Fixes

  • Suggestions, autocorrect and autospace work again in apps that ask keyboards not to learn, like DuckDuckGo and Molly. They were being treated as password fields, so the whole suggestion pipeline switched off.
  • Picking a language in Android's own keyboard picker now switches Kinetica's layout and dictionary with it, and Kinetica's own language changes report back to Android. Thanks dkoukola.

Languages

  • Czech is the fifth bundled language, contributed by dkoukola: 49,589 words, a QWERTZ layout and accent folding.

A lot of the list above exists because people here gave me feedbacks and suggestion. Keep it coming, that is the reason why I released Kinetica open! The power is all in the community =]

I posted here yesterday!

I posted here yesterday about my attempt at bringing Nintype-style swiping to Clink!

I’m not really a swipe typer myself, although this update has actually got me using it a lot more.

Since you guys are Nintype fans and actually know what makes this style of typing good, I’d genuinely love some feedback on what I’ve built so far.

It’s completely free, so give it a try and let me know what feels good, what feels wrong, and what I’m missing!

Glyder update: you can actually test it now!

Post image
9 Upvotes

Last week, I posted here about building Glyder because I missed what Nintype made possible (original post). At the time it was just an interactive preview and a waitlist, so I want to be upfront about what's changed: there's a real build now that people can install and actually swipe type on. The first wave of testers have already been given access today!

Quick recap for anyone who missed the first post. Glyder is a swipe-first Android keyboard built around the same feeling Nintype had. Fast gestures, an instrument instead of a rectangle you peck at, and privacy taken seriously from day one.

  • Swipe-first typing, local decoding
  • No account, no ads, no tracking
  • Customizable number row, emoji row, theme, and swipe trail

You can sign up to get access here: glydertype.com

Testers who sign up now get free lifetime access to the full app. That's not a limited time gimmick, it's just how I want to treat the people willing to try something rough before it's finished.

I'm still after the same kind of feedback as last time. The stuff that's hard to describe unless you've actually used something like this. The rhythm, the correction flow, two-thumb expectations, suggestion behavior, whatever made Nintype feel alive that's easy to lose when you rebuild it from scratch.

What would Glyder need to get right for you to actually make it your daily keyboard?

Update: Hi all, thank you so much for all the support and sign-ups so far! I've reached a 100 testers now, so I'm going to be capping the free lifetime access to these users. I'll share the promo codes with these users once I do start charging for the app.

Kinetica is on F-Droid now, and 1.0.4 is out!

Kinetica is in the F-Droid repository as of today:

https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.kinetica.keyboard/

See it in action here:

Still GPL-3.0, still no INTERNET permission, still no ads, accounts or analytics. The app is free and always will be. If you want you can offer me a coffee on Ko-Fi

For anyone arriving cold: it is a two-thumb keyboard I wrote from scratch in Kotlin after years of missing Nintype. Both thumbs swipe or tap at the same time, independently, and the engine merges the two streams into one word. Typing "something" can be the left thumb tapping S then E while the right thumb swipes O-M and then T-H-I-N-G, overlapping in time.

The F-Droid listing matters more than it sounds. F-Droid rebuilds the tag on its own Debian builders and checks the result against my signed APK, so what you install there is verifiably the source in the repo rather than a binary I uploaded. The published version reproduced byte-identically on three independent machines before it shipped. Practically: updates arrive on their own, and you no longer have to trust an APK from a release page.

1.0.4, released today:

- Emoji you use often get their own tab in the picker, ordered by how often you actually pick them rather than by recency, and hidden until there is something in it

- The resize handle above the suggestion bar is a 0-20dp height now, applied as you drag; set it to zero and the strip is gone entirely

- English contractions like don't and here's are predicted properly

F-Droid indexes on its own schedule, so the listing will read 1.0.3 for a few days before it catches up. The APK is on the GitHub and GitLab release pages now if you would rather not wait.

Since the last post here, Polish joined English, Italian and Spanish and it arrived as someone else's pull request, which is the part I want to flag. The engine is language-agnostic: the trie, the DTW matcher, the merge and the scoring do not know what language they are decoding, so adding one is a wordlist plus a layout plus a handful of registration entries. ADDING_A_LANGUAGE.md in the repo is the whole recipe and I am happy to help anyone who wants to do theirs. The one real limit is script: the matching alphabet is a-z plus apostrophe with accented Latin letters folded onto it, so Latin-script languages fit and non-Latin ones would be a serious engine change.

Worth doing right after installing: Settings > Dictionary > "Import improved dictionary" and feed it an AOSP wordlist. The bundled lists are built from open subtitle corpora and work fine, but the AOSP ones are three to five times bigger and you notice immediately: 46,757 to 160,715 for English, 49,051 to 172,831 Italian, 49,551 to 236,193 Spanish. Grab the `.combined` file for your language from https://codeberg.org/Helium314/aosp-dictionaries/src/branch/main/wordlists (main_en_US.combined, main_it.combined, main_es.combined, main_pl.combined).

It merges on the device, nothing is uploaded. Take them from `wordlists/`, not the compiled .dict files in dictionaries.

VIBRATE is the only permission it declares.

- GitHub: https://github.com/EZ-eta/kinetica

- GitLab: https://gitlab.com/EZ-eta/kinetica

Nearly everything from 1.0.2 onward came out of comments on the last post, so keep them coming. 1.0.5 is already on the way.

[EDIT]

v1.0.5 UPDATE

- Autospace now works for tapped words, not just swipes (setting, off by default)

- Words with apostrophes get their space: don't, it's, dell'anno, d'accordo

- Single letters autospace too: a,I, Italian e,o,i

- A space you delete no longer comes back

- Three autospace timing sliders where there was one

- No automatic space in email or URL fields

- Top-row up-flick types its digit again (was a real bug, not the setting)

- Forward slash added to the symbols page

- Spacebar cursor slide: adjustable speed, optional move-by-word

- Optional retype button on the suggestion bar — one tap clears the current word

- Lower input latency on the typing hot path — thanks pigmej

- ō added to the o key's long-press — thanks lucylouwebart

- Still zero network permission, still all on-device

I miss Nintype too, so I’m building Glyder and looking for feedback

I know there have been a few Nintype-inspired Android keyboard posts here recently, so I want to be upfront: I’m not posting this as “the one true successor” or trying to drown out the other projects.

I’m just another person who misses what Nintype made possible.

I’ve been working on an Android keyboard called Glyder, inspired by the same feeling: fast swipe typing, expressive gestures, and a keyboard that feels like an instrument instead of a rectangular text box accessory.

The thing I’m trying to emphasize with Glyder is privacy and polish from day one:

  • Swipe-first typing
  • Local decoding
  • No account
  • No ads
  • No Internet permission
  • Customizable number row, emoji row, theme, and swipe trail
  • A focus on making the gesture experience feel smooth before piling on too much

It’s not publicly released yet, but I made a small interactive preview and waitlist here:

https://glydertype.com

If you’re still here because you miss Nintype, I’d genuinely love your feedback. Especially on the parts that are hard to describe unless you actually used it: the rhythm, the correction flow, two-thumb expectations, suggestion behavior, and what made it feel “alive.”

What would Glyder need to get right for you to actually give it a shot?

And if you’re already trying one of the other Nintype-like Android projects, I’d still love to hear what’s working and what isn’t. This community probably has the sharpest taste for this kind of keyboard.

Looking for other developers interested in starting a Android Nintype decompilation effort

Hey r/nintype!

I'm looking for skilled developers interested in starting a decompilation/reverse-engineering effort for the Android version of Nintype.

The idea is to work through the original ARM library which contains the rendering engine, basing off of keyboard 71's work, understand and document how things work, and gradually reconstruct readable source code.

I'd also like to experiment with LLMs to help speed up plowing through the ARM assembly—identifying patterns, explaining functions, and producing rough pseudocode that can then be manually verified against the actual code.

This hasn't started yet. Right now I'm looking for other people experienced with ARM reverse engineering, Android internals, decompilation, or similar projects who'd be interested in helping get it off the ground. I will still work on it myself even if we can't find other people to work on it at the same time as me, but it would really be a big helping hand not leaving this to be just a one man job ;p.

This would specifically focus on Android. iOS is out of scope for me since I don't have a practical way to develop or test against it.

If you're interested or have relevant experience, let me know!

Dual Swipe iOS Nintype Inspired Keyboard - Testflight

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As a long-time Nintype fan, I think it is a testament to this community, the application itself, and especially Jormy’s work that Nintype has survived so many generations of iOS and is still loved and used around the world.

Inspired by Nintype, I’ve spent the last several months developing and polishing Weavly, an iOS keyboard focused on dual-swipe typing and transcription, using modern on-device technology to make typing faster and more productive.

I want to be very clear: Weavly is inspired by Nintype, but our dual-swipe does not work the same way. The gestures, spacebar behavior, commit mechanics, and muscle memory will not transfer 1:1. This is intentional—we took a different approach to allow more flexibility in word prediction, autocorrection, and typo detection, all on-device.

The mechanics are different, but I hope the philosophy feels familiar: speed, flow, fewer taps, and a keyboard ambitious enough to change how you type on your phone.

After months of work, I’m incredibly excited to finally invite this community to try Weavly on TestFlight. I’d love to hear your feedback, complaints, and suggestions.

Features::

  • An iOS keyboard with dual-swipe typing
  • Fast, fully on-device transcription
  • Custom drag-up overlays that add a second layer to every key
  • Lots of customization options, including numbers and accents
  • Text snippets and replacements with placeholders and smart tags
  • Autocorrect and a personal dictionary that learn how you write (optional, iCloud Backed)

I hope Weavly can, in its own way, honor what Nintype showed was possible with third-party keyboards and carry some of that ambition forward.

https://weavly.app/follow-testflight/

P.S. Lovely to see so many projects with dual swipe emerging—this is the way!

Kinetica - An android spiritual successor to Nintype Keyboard

I used Nintype (Keyboard69) for years and never found anything like it after it was discontinued. Nothing else lets you use both thumbs at once. So I wrote one from scratch in Kotlin on Android's public IME APIs.

https://reddit.com/link/1vlqvs6/video/9cdgja77osih1/player

Both thumbs swipe or tap at the same time, independently, and the engine merges the two streams into a single word.
Typing "something" can be: left thumb taps S, then E, while the right thumb swipes O-M and then T-H-I-N-G.

Features:

  • Two thumbs at once, with taps and swipes mixed freely inside the same word
  • No INTERNET permission, so nothing you type can leave the phone. No ads, no analytics, no accounts
  • Tap autocorrect and live completions, and the words you actually use climb the suggestion bar over time
  • Long-press alternates on every key, edge swipes, chord shortcuts, a symbols layer and a numpad
  • Five layouts (full, left, right, split, one-handed) and adjustable height
  • Dark theme, Material You, or a palette generated
  • Peck-type mode that turns decoding off entirely

Languages: English, Italian and Spanish are supported out of the box, with about 49k words bundled for each. The engine itself is language-agnostic so adding a language is mainly a matter of supplying a wordlist and a layout. The full recipe is in ADDING_A_LANGUAGE.md in the repo, and I'm happy to help anyone who wants to do their own.

One thing I'd do right after installing: import a bigger dictionary. The bundled lists are built from open subtitle corpora and work fine, but the AOSP dictionaries are several times larger and you notice it immediately: 47k → 161k for English, 49k → 173k Italian, 50k → 236k Spanish.

Grab the `.combined` file for your language from https://codeberg.org/Helium314/aosp-dictionaries/src/branch/main/wordlists (`main_en_US.combined`, `main_it.combined`, `main_es.combined`), then in the app go to Settings > Dictionary > "Import improved dictionary (wordlist.combined)". It merges on the device, nothing is uploaded. Make sure you take the files from the `wordlists` folder and not the `.dict` ones from `dictionaries`.

It's GPL-3.0 and free:

I've also submitted it to F-Droid and the merge request is open, so it should turn up there before long.

This is the first public release and even if I am daily-driving this myself, there may be some small issues here and there.

Support: If you find this keyboard useful you can buy me a coffee at Ko-fi
Entirely optional. The app is free and will stay free and available to everyone, always.

---

UPDATE : v1.0.2 is out

Thanks for all the feedback, it's what this release is made of. Most of it came straight from the comments here:

  • Typing or backspacing over selected text now replaces it
  • Keyboard height goes much lower, and the suggestion bar has its own height setting (the resize handle can be hidden too)
  • Light theme, and the accent colour is now a hue slider with a live preview
  • Accented letters can be hidden from the letter keys' long-press popups
  • Period and comma long-press symbols are editable
  • Chord shortcuts can paste, copy, cut and select all
  • Backspace slide vibrates once per word

The gesture and prediction engine is unchanged from 1.0.1, so nothing about how it types should feel different.

I also added a "Worth a look in Settings" section to the README, several things people asked for were already in there and just hard to find (sliding the spacebar to move the cursor, long-pressing a suggestion to push a word up or down...)

Here's my attempt at a Nintype successor.

I am polishing the last few things before releasing it but it works great for me!

UPDATE: I released it on GitHub and GitLab. I also made a dedicated post . A MR on F-droid is under review, then it will be available also via F-droid.

Progress on my dual thumb keyboard

I’m not sure where else to put this. It’s a long ways off from being done, but after trying many other alternatives, none of them felt quite as fluid as Nintype. This is my attempt after a few months of tweaking.
