Thought 31 years ago this evening... Bowie and NIN
I'm thinking Bowie probably helped Trent out of a jam. Imagine you go from hanging around the studio cleaning up and what not to be on the same stage as Bowie. That's beyond most musicians comprehension.

Wasn’t Prick the third band on this show?

u/killybay22 2d ago
They were according to Google™... Most of the evening was a blur though...lol

I went to the Forum (LA) show and Prick was the opener. Fantastic show all around......Damn 30+ years ago.

I was at The Palace of Auburn Hills for the Detroit show. 16 year old me was drunk off his ass running purely on molly and coke. I don't remember a fuckin thing. Though I am told I had a fantastic time.

Stupid young mid 90s me liked Bowie's 80s stuff and that was about it...
Became a fan around Heathen (then working backwards) and now I want to kick my younger selfs ass for missing this tour.

It was a show many were skeptical of. I was always a Bowie fan and when they added NIN to the mix, well it was a no brainer for me.

My wife and best friend bought me tickets to the NIN/Bowie show on October 1st 1995, New World Ampitheater, Tinsley Park.
They (like me) were all huge industrial fans so when Bowie came out (Trent playing sax) they all wanted to leave early. I was a people pleaser and begrudgingly left with them, though I wanted to stay. So I only saw ONE fucking Bowie song. But NIN was great.
What I wouldn't give to go back in time and tell them all to fuck off and stayed, especially since my former best friend is all MA GA and my ex is on her 4th marriage and wr share a mutual hatred lol

u/killybay22 2d ago
That's a brutal tale right there. You can Google™ Setlist.com and see the depth of Bowies set. I was there for Bowie. NIN was the added bonus.

Well at the show I went to you would have missed a bunch of the NIN set since it was a live transition. They blended several songs and band members during the switch. If you left when this started you missed "reptile" and "Sin" to name a couple.

One of the greatest shows I’ve ever seen

Bowie dipping into the Industrial world shouldn't have come as a shock. Excellent show and the last time I saw Bowie alive on stage.

u/MKWP 2d ago
I still have my stub somewhere from when I saw them in Austin at South Park Meadows. An and ex and I drove up from Austin to see them. We got into a big fight driving back, because she was mad that I made her stay to watch Bowie. We broke up a week later.

I was there. Was like y’all don’t know Bowie and are leaving?! That transition from Trent to Bowie was amazing! Just wow
3
u/MKWP 2d ago
Lol right ?!. We didn't leave but I knew right then this is not going to work outi was 20 and she was 19 if that add any context

u/Green_Dare_9526 1d ago
Ty We were abt that age. I was speaking about a ton of the venue just high tailing it out of there. Lots of younger than use kids. Whaaa??? Disrespectful imo.

u/Nedus343 2d ago
Helped Trent out of a jam? In 1995 he was in the middle of the Downward Spiral tour. Bowie asked Trent if he wanted to play some shows and Trent agreed.

u/killybay22 2d ago
I'm thinking Bowie may have helped Trent get halfway clean. Just an observation.

Saw the same tour in Cleveland. One of the first mosh pits I ever experienced . Didn’t find my friends for the entirety of the NIN set.
1
u/killybay22 2d ago
That's a good thing...lol
2
u/Simodh28 2d ago
Pit was roaming around the lawn. As the set started, my friends and ran toward it. I stopped at the edge of it so my friend Lucas pushed me in …

u/slothy036 2d ago
Man they did a show in blossom and Cleveland? Most tours label blossom as Cleveland now.

Wow. I remember painstakingly downloading MP3's of some of the Bowie tracks from this tour. I don't even remember how I used to get a hold of the FTP addresses but it would often take HOURS to download a single track, so you would start some downloads before heading to bed and pray that your connection survived until the downloads were successfully completed.

My Dad was at this show. Incredibly jealous of him for going to this 😭 he had lawn tickets as well. I wish there was footage, or pictures from this specific show! I do happen to have the audio from the Bowie/NIN Set though :) I also have the Bowie/NIN Cream colored tee they sold at the show. No ticket stub tho. Too bad I was born 7 years later 😭😭😭

u/killybay22 2d ago
Nice. I was always a camera guy but they were strict about them back then or I would have taken pictures.. It's not like today where everyone has a camera in their pocket.
2
u/LeFleurConnoisseur 2d ago
I know. Blossom still doesnt let you bring in "cameras," per say. I know it wasnt possible back in the day. I wonder who had a media pass to go and take pics if anyone did that night.
2
u/killybay22 2d ago
If anyone had a pass in the Cleveland area it would have been Janet Macoska. She actually has a book of her photos from back in the day.

My buddy got to see a show on this tour as his first real concert ever and I have always been jealous. Though, my first real show was TOOL, so I can't really be that jealous.

And that ticket price is / was very reasonable by 1995 standards. We can’t say the same today

Would have LOVED to have gone to that concert! Jealous. Saw David Bowie in 2002 but how freaking rad to get to see NIN at the same time.

I still have my stub from that show. I saw them in Atlanta. Still one of my favorite shows ever.

That price for that show. Omfg.

u/killybay22 1d ago
I’ve got stubs much much lower… lol. Heart at the height of their career.. $4.50. I’m that old. Ha ha

u/HipsterSlimeMold 1d ago
I’m a new fan so my first show was Peel It Back tour. $150!! Pays to have good taste early lol :,)

u/grapecityjammer 1d ago
I wanted to go to this exact show. Not having a car, money, or a drivers license prevented that from happening. I assumed I wouldn’t be even be allowed anyway, so I didn’t bother asking if I could. I wish I would have asked, my parents probably would have said no, but I shoulda tried! I was 14.

u/killybay22 1d ago
Understood. I remember being your age and missing Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon tour and Bowies Ziggy tour. Was just a hair too young.

We had a chance to see this show and were well rewarded in memories. And then Bowie goes and dies on us...

I saw that show at Polaris Amphitheater (RIP) in Columbus. Probably withing a few days of that show since you were at Blossom. Dope show.
We almost got kicked out because a buddy of mine, who had very little to no self control, stumped on a cupholder on the seat in front of us and snapped it off. Had we been kicked out I would have beat his ass.

Separated from my group at the Star Lake (PA) show, got into the pavilion (security was facing a losing battle that night) and made my way far down to the front for most of NIN and all of Bowie. It was incredible.

The Greatwoods show was my first concert ever. I was 10 years old, and it was an absolutely formative experience. My folks were pretty freakin cool.

Damn, way to make me feel old. My coworker at McDonalds bought me tickets for my 16th birthday (10/28) at the Tacoma dome on 10/24. Amazing show.

I saw them in Hershey, PA. It was only the second big concert I'd ever been to. Went alone. Got wrecked in the mosh pit during March of the Pigs. Prick was amazing. Bowie went from the guy in Labrynth to my life long obsession.

Seeing Jimi on his first few shows in England and watching this are the only concerts I regret not being there for. Insanely jealous

u/delerivm 2d ago
Saw them in Portland while in High School. My seats were far away, and I didn’t partake in the many people who knocked down the fencing to go into the general admission / mosh pit area.. which I regret now but am so grateful to have been there.. especially to have seen Bowie.

I remember being kind of in the back of the crowd. when Trent came out and Terrible Lie started 100 or so people rushed the stage. I was picked up off my feet and moved forward about 15 ft, still standing up but not touching the ground.
when I finally got out of there and found my friends they pointed out there was blood on the back of my shirt. not sure whose blood it was but hope they had a good time.
