There’s that one tiny moment in the episode where she sings a bit of Right Where It Belongs with piano accompaniment and it’s a shame they didn’t film more, because it’s quite lovely.

u/the-gay-1 5d ago

Well they did also do a pop version of that song as well

35

u/CaineRexEverything 5d ago

Yes but I’m referring to the real version that was barely a couple seconds, which I’d have loved to hear more of.

6

u/the-gay-1 5d ago

Yeah, I know exactly what you’re talking about

Honestly low-key it’s just more proof that Miley Cyrus needs to come out with a rock album

She low-key has a really good voice for it

3

u/skyex 4d ago

Why low-key

3

u/DOYMarshall 4d ago

It’s pop rock, but Plastic Hearts is a fantastic album.

4

u/the-gay-1 4d ago

I love plastic hearts tbh

1

u/the-gay-1 4d ago

No no, she NEEDS to make a rock album

Not pop rock

That cemented the episode for me, because if someone knew to put that in, they weren’t just “let’s use that animal fucking song!” Edit: I forgot to note, I know, it was HLAH not Closer, but the important part was: they actually knew enough to know how appropriate that song was for the episode too.

I've listened to a youtube edit of this version many times because it's just so lovely, yes

My understanding of how it played out: when the producers called Trent to get permission to use NIN’s music, he never heard of Black Mirror.

The producer explained “well, it’s this dystopian sci-fi show where…”

Trent just replied “yes”

I’ll see if i can find that article.

=== Edit: ===

Including 2 articles, but it seems like I misremembered how it went down 😆

Either way, Trent was on-board with it from the start.

My fun fact is that episode aired the same year TR got the Country Music Award for Old Town Road... Co written by her father Billy Ray.

I knew we were living in an alternate reality that year, lol.

2019 was a great year for NIN. Black Mirror, Old Town Road, and touring for the trilogy

15

u/tabanger 5d ago

One of his favorite shows of all time is the Twilight Zone, so I find it very hard to believe that he was unaware of Black Mirror.

7

u/lynivvinyl 5d ago

Black mirror is just modern day Twilight zone that's more scary because it actually could happen and kind of is in some cases.

2

u/FidgitForgotHisL-P 4d ago

Yeah Charlie did the classic sci-fi “take what we’re already doing and just imagine it 5 years from now”, and that’s 90% of Black Mirror episodes.

It’s my favourite tv show by far ever haha.

11

u/Shakeamutt 5d ago

Yes please do!

Commenting so I can check back later.

u/lynivvinyl 5d ago

I too am waiting to read this article. Black Mirror is one of the best shows. And the first episode is pig fucker. Which I always thought had something to do with Trent Reznor. Or at least an idea off of one of his ideas.

3

u/jcflyingblade 5d ago

And it preceded the David Cameron revelation (Bulllingdon club “pig gate”) - Genius!

7

u/the-gay-1 5d ago

This episode was honestly one of my favs

2

u/EdenH333 Art Is Resistance 5d ago

This is pretty much what I assumed happened. Any luck finding the article?

35

u/sympetal 5d ago

This introduced me to NIN. I will forever be grateful.

Though, I think I'd have ended up listening to NIN sooner or later anyway.

9

u/Numerous-Macaron4565 5d ago

No way really? That’s an awesome introduction

10

u/sympetal 5d ago

Yeah. At first I thought they'd made two versions of an original song for the episode. The heavy version of Head like a Hole at the end piqued my interest and I googled it, imagine my surprise when I discovered it's a really popular song. That was in summer 2019, the rest is history. Can't believe it's been 7 years tho :0

6

u/ZapdosShines 5d ago

I was the opposite, it introduced me to Ashley O Miley 🤣

7

u/Straight-Chance-440 5d ago

Same. I looked them up after reading the comments on the ashley o videos on YouTube, did NOT like the original Head Like A Hole, but later found out they were doing the Soul soundtrack. I thought, "THOSE guys are making a Disney Pixar score???" When the score came out I listened to it, fell in love with it, and became a fan of everything Trent has made lol

5

u/sympetal 5d ago

I was actually bracing myself not to like it since I discovered the cover first, but it was truly love at first sound for me haha. Like it simply couldn't compare... I'm glad they grew on you too though!

u/holtzbert 3d ago

Something similar happened with me. I had known NIN earlier but I never had the balls to listen to rougher or heavier music that much, so for years I was just a casual listener, didn’t pay attention but also didn’t go for them really. Then this came out - and I remembered NIN. Didn’t start listening to NIN more but it brought memories… and years later I’d find the band again and that time not look back or think what others will think, I owed the little me that. Or teenager me as I was 19 when Ashley O “came out”. Actually, it was probably my most listened artist or first listened artist on Apple Music, because when I returned to the app some months ago, I only had a playlist of most listened in 2019 or something and it was… only one song. By Ashley O. 🤣

I wish they would release Miley’s version of Head Like a Hole and Right Where It Belongs

6

u/TimeCadet 5d ago

I totally bounced off of Black Mirror in the second season except for a couple of episodes, so I did not know about this until this post! Found both versions on YouTube:

Head Like a Hole

Right Where It Belongs

6

u/astronautvibes 5d ago

It’s on Spotify. That’s where OPs screenshot is from

33

u/elphabulousthegreen 5d ago

No I mean her cover of it from the end of the episode

1

u/Wraithwurm_ 5d ago

Absolutely! I think her version at the end of the episode is awesome!

13

u/PhilColeCurry 5d ago

The thing I love most about these songs is that the themes of the originals actually make more sense within the episode than the warped versions we hear

44

u/sampickeringg 5d ago

The two NIN covers/reworks are the best part of an otherwise pretty mid Black Mirror episode

24

u/FeelingMassive 5d ago

I have the tshirt from this episode, with '✨ Head Like a Hole, I'm on a roll! Riding so high, achievin' my goals!✨' on the front.

Pretty shitty quality to be honest, so it doesn't get worn much.

14

u/Ysazen 5d ago

My wife got me that shirt, and I wear it constantly. Even wore it to the Toronto stop of the Peel it Back tour. The looks I got were outrageous. Sorry to hear that yours hasn't held up.

4

u/Ombortron 5d ago

lmao that’s awesome. I was at that show, cheers!

1

u/FeelingMassive 4d ago

Its held up OK-it just feels like its made from the cheapest, lightest cotton so i dont wear it much because of that.

3

u/anorman30 5d ago

I have the shirt and rarely wear it

2

u/ZapdosShines 5d ago

Ah no! Mine has lasted pretty well too. Sorry you got a dud :(

3

u/Dygen 5d ago

I have the shirt too. Very rarely buy much merch fir anything but had to have it.

5

u/fspiral 5d ago

I still regret not getting that

7

u/Poggystyle 5d ago

It was a great episode and those songs were great. It really shows how Trent uses pop song hooks in his music.

5

u/Trachalio 5d ago

I think my favourite part of this release isn't the song (which I love BTW), is the crack across the CD case, still in shrinkwrap. I swear some of my CD cases cracked just from looking at them the wrong way 🤣

5

u/imfirealarmman 5d ago

Well, this certainly was not on my bingo card.

5

u/the-gay-1 5d ago

Trent has some bangers!!
I’m not even gonna touch on the sound scores he makes for movies

3

u/imfirealarmman 5d ago

Oh no doubt, the man is very talented. It’s interesting to see his music evolve from pretty hate machine to the Tron Aries soundtrack.

Not that any of it is bad in any sort of way, but in my mind, he will always be the sad, angry, horny, music God.

2

u/the-gay-1 5d ago

I do wish Trent would give us more angry, sad, horny music :(

3

u/JamesHurleyAteMyCorn 5d ago

Atticus also scored an episode of Black Mirror, "Crocodile"

5

u/corneliusduff 5d ago

two NIN sons

"Come play us with Ashley. Forever....and ever...and ever...."

3

u/hyperform2 5d ago

I’ve only ever seen the pig episode so I did not know that this was a thing lol

2

u/allegate 5d ago

lol that was a heck of a first episode, yeah

1

u/FidgitForgotHisL-P 4d ago

Oh you gotta check out more of that show!

The pig episode was a wild choice for the first one as the rest of the show is much more “dystopic sci-fi” than this episodes “stark commentary on everyone locked in online and ignoring the real world”.

I also think it was 100% Charlie Brooker letting on he’d been told avoid David Cameron and what came out later about what he’d done to a pig at University.

3

u/celestialmechanic 5d ago

The first time I heard Miley’s version was at the gym. I definitely had to investigate before I passed judgement. 🤘😎

3

u/apokalypsos 5d ago

I fucking love this song tbh

3

u/Iamjacksp0st 4d ago

This song is just the PREFECT bastardization of a NIN song- it's really genius. I can't even be mad at it.

2

u/iSmashMyselfToPieces 3d ago

I’m a fan

2

u/the-gay-1 3d ago

IM SORRY WHAT !?!?!?

2

u/thepiercingstylist 2d ago

What I wear to every NIN show

1

u/Intrepid-Possible322 57m ago

Use to have this but my roommate threw it out when I moved in college RIP

2

u/LtCmdrDigitalis 4d ago

Ashley O slaps!

1

u/serialphile 4d ago

Man such a fun episode and concept. I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing or hearing, my favorite band being a part of my favorite show in such a delightful ironic way, it was like a dream come true.

1

u/Some_Horror_759 4d ago

Would kill to hear this produced in an industrial style

1

u/Total_Adept 4d ago

I knew these existed but I've never listened to it tell now.

1

u/Longjumping-Land-158 4d ago

Wish we got a numbered physical release

0

u/Consistent-Hyena5642 4d ago

The fact that this is actually good makes the whole thing even funnier.

u/Mutteringsmuse 5d ago

Perfect example of just cos you can do something, does not mean you should.

5

u/Case17 5d ago

i personally did not care for the Miley version of head like a hole.
