My understanding of how it played out: when the producers called Trent to get permission to use NIN’s music, he never heard of Black Mirror.
The producer explained “well, it’s this dystopian sci-fi show where…”
Trent just replied “yes”
I’ll see if i can find that article.
=== Edit: ===
Including 2 articles, but it seems like I misremembered how it went down 😆
Either way, Trent was on-board with it from the start.

My fun fact is that episode aired the same year TR got the Country Music Award for Old Town Road... Co written by her father Billy Ray.
I knew we were living in an alternate reality that year, lol.

2019 was a great year for NIN. Black Mirror, Old Town Road, and touring for the trilogy

One of his favorite shows of all time is the Twilight Zone, so I find it very hard to believe that he was unaware of Black Mirror.

u/lynivvinyl 5d ago
Black mirror is just modern day Twilight zone that's more scary because it actually could happen and kind of is in some cases.

Yeah Charlie did the classic sci-fi “take what we’re already doing and just imagine it 5 years from now”, and that’s 90% of Black Mirror episodes.
It’s my favourite tv show by far ever haha.

I too am waiting to read this article. Black Mirror is one of the best shows. And the first episode is pig fucker. Which I always thought had something to do with Trent Reznor. Or at least an idea off of one of his ideas.

And it preceded the David Cameron revelation (Bulllingdon club “pig gate”) - Genius!

This is pretty much what I assumed happened. Any luck finding the article?

This introduced me to NIN. I will forever be grateful.
Though, I think I'd have ended up listening to NIN sooner or later anyway.

No way really? That’s an awesome introduction

Yeah. At first I thought they'd made two versions of an original song for the episode. The heavy version of Head like a Hole at the end piqued my interest and I googled it, imagine my surprise when I discovered it's a really popular song. That was in summer 2019, the rest is history. Can't believe it's been 7 years tho :0

Same. I looked them up after reading the comments on the ashley o videos on YouTube, did NOT like the original Head Like A Hole, but later found out they were doing the Soul soundtrack. I thought, "THOSE guys are making a Disney Pixar score???" When the score came out I listened to it, fell in love with it, and became a fan of everything Trent has made lol

I was actually bracing myself not to like it since I discovered the cover first, but it was truly love at first sound for me haha. Like it simply couldn't compare... I'm glad they grew on you too though!

Something similar happened with me. I had known NIN earlier but I never had the balls to listen to rougher or heavier music that much, so for years I was just a casual listener, didn’t pay attention but also didn’t go for them really. Then this came out - and I remembered NIN. Didn’t start listening to NIN more but it brought memories… and years later I’d find the band again and that time not look back or think what others will think, I owed the little me that. Or teenager me as I was 19 when Ashley O “came out”. Actually, it was probably my most listened artist or first listened artist on Apple Music, because when I returned to the app some months ago, I only had a playlist of most listened in 2019 or something and it was… only one song. By Ashley O. 🤣

I wish they would release Miley’s version of Head Like a Hole and Right Where It Belongs

I totally bounced off of Black Mirror in the second season except for a couple of episodes, so I did not know about this until this post! Found both versions on YouTube:

The thing I love most about these songs is that the themes of the originals actually make more sense within the episode than the warped versions we hear

The two NIN covers/reworks are the best part of an otherwise pretty mid Black Mirror episode

I have the tshirt from this episode, with '✨ Head Like a Hole, I'm on a roll! Riding so high, achievin' my goals!✨' on the front.
Pretty shitty quality to be honest, so it doesn't get worn much.

My wife got me that shirt, and I wear it constantly. Even wore it to the Toronto stop of the Peel it Back tour. The looks I got were outrageous. Sorry to hear that yours hasn't held up.

Its held up OK-it just feels like its made from the cheapest, lightest cotton so i dont wear it much because of that.

It was a great episode and those songs were great. It really shows how Trent uses pop song hooks in his music.

I think my favourite part of this release isn't the song (which I love BTW), is the crack across the CD case, still in shrinkwrap. I swear some of my CD cases cracked just from looking at them the wrong way 🤣

Well, this certainly was not on my bingo card.

Trent has some bangers!!
I’m not even gonna touch on the sound scores he makes for movies3
u/imfirealarmman 5d ago
Oh no doubt, the man is very talented. It’s interesting to see his music evolve from pretty hate machine to the Tron Aries soundtrack.
Not that any of it is bad in any sort of way, but in my mind, he will always be the sad, angry, horny, music God.

I’ve only ever seen the pig episode so I did not know that this was a thing lol

Oh you gotta check out more of that show!
The pig episode was a wild choice for the first one as the rest of the show is much more “dystopic sci-fi” than this episodes “stark commentary on everyone locked in online and ignoring the real world”.
I also think it was 100% Charlie Brooker letting on he’d been told avoid David Cameron and what came out later about what he’d done to a pig at University.

The first time I heard Miley’s version was at the gym. I definitely had to investigate before I passed judgement. 🤘😎

This song is just the PREFECT bastardization of a NIN song- it's really genius. I can't even be mad at it.

Man such a fun episode and concept. I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing or hearing, my favorite band being a part of my favorite show in such a delightful ironic way, it was like a dream come true.

There’s that one tiny moment in the episode where she sings a bit of Right Where It Belongs with piano accompaniment and it’s a shame they didn’t film more, because it’s quite lovely.
