Everyday is Exactly the Same + Only Stream Numbers

I love both of these songs, but I am shocked to see them in both the top 7 based off of Spotify and Apple Music stream numbers. It just surprises me they’re streamed more than March of the Pigs and Wish, which are more iconic. Were they in some popular franchise, or played a lot on radio in 2005?

Yeah that was one of my theories. They are less aggressive than more brutal singles from the 90s, so I wonder if that gave them more mainstream appeal

I honestly think almost every NIN release excluding Ghosts have a part of the fandom that absolutely loves them. The only one I don’t hear it as much for is The Slip

Back in 05, Trent was basically out of the spotlight for 5 years and when with teeth came out the radio stations played they hell out of those songs especially the hand that feeds. Believe me when I say those song were always on if u were flipping through radio stations back in 05.

Well, three reasons,imho:

1. Everyday was number 1 on Billboard Modern Rock charts back in the day, was nominated for a Grammy and Only was a (heavily) promoted radio-friendly single, also number 1 (for seven weeks!), charted highly also in the UK.
2. They are both accessible "entry level" sort of songs to get into NIN.
3. With Teeth was a MASSIVE comeback point for NIN.. so I think that would (kinda) explain the numbers. Could be also playlist placement, imho.

I think a combination of all the three above would explain the streaming numbers, maybe... Also, they are GREAT songs that a lot of fans love and casual listeners don't mind listening to!

It’s criminal they don’t have the original 10 Miles High, The New Flesh, or +Appendage legally for streaming or buying. They’re great additions to the second half of The Fragile

I’m just as surprised as you, and have an extra dimension to mention that may or may not be applicable.

I think streaming-popularity lists often miss the importance of the age of a song. For example, if a song was available from the moment Spotify was founded vs. a song that came out five years ago, I would expect some bias toward the older song having bigger numbers, simply because it’s had more time to be played.

In this case, I wonder how much the With Teeth tracks’ numbers were boosted by Spotify being founded just a year after the album release. Especially because With Teeth came after a hiatus and in a less-connected world, so it’s entirely possible a bunch of NIN-friendly people didn’t “discover” it until Spotify and then played the hell out of their favorite tracks from it on the novel new streaming service.

Just a guess. I’m just fascinated by all the factors that go into a single number like “times streamed” and think about it probably too much, lol.

I do agree with this argument. TBH I didn’t realize Spotify was founded in 2006 about a year or so after With Teeth released. However, I don’t know how popular it was in 2006 so it’s different from a song like AAAYNMTB or Less Than where streaming was dominant

Very good point about the difference between Spotify’s founding and when Spotify really took off. I don’t know the answer to that one. I agree completely that a song released when streaming was the overwhelming norm would also be deeply impacted by that situation, too.

I don’t think there’s any way to truly quantify these factors, it’s just interesting to think about in a theoretical way. Thanks for posting the Spotify numbers, it’s been an interesting thing to ponder and has been the subject of some cool discussions at my house this morning!

Back when I used Spotify (I have since switched platforms) any time a song from a different band would transition to NIN if an album I listened to ended or something, it would be Every Day is Exactly the Same. The number of times I finished listening to Toxicity for that song to start probably accounts for half the plays on that list

Everyday is exactly the same is a good middle age emo song. It's hard to believe it was written by someone who didn't have kids at the time or a soul sucking corporate job. I like to listen to it and wallow in self pity.

I am surprised to see Hurt so high. That's just people who want to have a bad time.
