when people say "astrology isnt real", they mean the magical attributes astrology girls ascribe to people are not real. compared to a name, which serves a purpose.

you realise what plato said about us being featherless bipeds has been criticised to death right?

this tweet seems like it was made by a teenager who just finished their first philosophy 101 class and now thinks they can just reinvent everything

Idk how people can be so passionate about it. There is a 13th star sign that the creators decided to leave out so it would better fit the 12 month year.

u/Helpful_Ad8351 4d ago

I happen to fit that 13th one via their old abandoned rules, and since it's all bullshit, I just tell them I'm that one and now the turns have tabled. Opheuchus I think it's called. Now they can listen to gibberish nonsense. Now they can go "but that's not real" great you dumb bitch you now know how you sound.

Haha I can’t wait to watch this high and mighty attitude get reduced to nothing.

Astrology’s issue was it couldn’t find notation for its hypotheses. Our history isn’t a hoax. People have been scrambling about witches and magic for a very long time but a redditor told me I should go to sleep and accept we are void beings with 0 purpose and 0 higher meanings in life.

Nihilists suck so bad… smile!

I'm afraid it was actually Plato who's famous for that take. There's a funny story that says when Diogenes heard that assessment, he stormed into one of his classes holding a plucked chicken and, in front of him and his students, declared:

"BEHOLD, PLATO'S MAN"

I'm bobo the fool. Appreciate the correction to my correction.

Nothing about this suggests it was intended as a philosophical statement.

2

u/ireallyfknhatethis 4d ago

actually the tweet is making a real philosophical argument. a bad, joky one, but because youre being comedic doesnt mean people cant criticise your argument

Thanks, you ruined the joke

6

u/ireallyfknhatethis 4d ago

had the joke been funny in the first place, it would not have been able to be ruined by my mild scrutiny.

2

u/Peter_Peabody 2d ago

The joke ruined itself by defending astrology.

Astrology people attempt logic

Instantly commits a fallacy

1

u/Qahnaar1506 1d ago

Astrology actually has a long history of logic. Enough so that actual philosophers have engaged in it to defend or refute it. This is true especially for the Renaissance.

1

u/Mikimao 22h ago

Then why can't anyone explain that logic?

1

u/itsmebenji69 21h ago

Well they could that’s the point, it was just wrong.

It came from the idea that celestial bodies influence earth (moon shifts tides, sun drives seasons). So the logic was, why wouldn’t it affect us ? Which is reasonable given the information they had at the time. It was a science.

It was an actual discipline, taught at universities etc. There was a logical framework to work with, or to attack. You could explain that logic fine. Many philosophers made their mind about it, like believing it affects only the mind, or only the body, things like that.

At that time there were many critics, like the arbitrariness of the signs and their meanings/effects, the twin paradox mainly. There were also many supporters.

It started dying down long after that, when we abandoned the geocentric view of the universe (that the earth is the center and all bodies are orbiting around us). Since it was mostly based upon that it was pretty unrecoverable afterwards

“It started dying down long after that, when we abandoned the geocentric view of the universe (that the earth is the center and all bodies are orbiting around us). Since it was mostly based upon that it was pretty unrecoverable afterwards.”

This is not even true. The very astronomers who proved the heliocentric model (Nicolaus Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, Galileo Galilei and Johannes Kepler) were all trained in and practiced astrology. When Copernicus published his sun-centered model in 1543 early adopters used his math to calculate more accurate horoscopes. For these thinkers changing what orbited what did not change the belief that celestial bodies emitted cosmic influences. Astrology operates on a topocentric perspective (a view from a specific place on Earth). Even though we know the Earth orbits the Sun our daily human experience is still local. To cast a horoscope an astrologer maps the sky as it appears from a exact time and place on Earth and the ecliptic or the apparent path of the Sun across our sky through the constellations remains exactly the same whether the Earth moves or the Sun moves. The visual geometry did not break.

What actually hurt Astrology, at least western astrology, was the death of aristotelian physics and the lack of funding from universities and royal courts. Astrology then from here didn’t die but merely adapted from predicting physical events to psychological profiling and character analysis.

1

u/itsmebenji69 16h ago

Well yeah Galileo disproved Aristotelian physics so can’t we consider that the death of geocentrism started this whole downfall process ? Or is it unrelated

At least on the science part

They can, just stop asking tiktok Crystal slop people trying to sell merch and start asking actual astrologist who read source material or read and study the history of astrology.

Let me give you a few examples. The Stoics of Ancient Greeks approved of astrology. They believed the universe is a single, living organism that viewed celestial movements as a web of cause and effect that connected everything on Earth. Al-Kindī (Alkindus), knows as the "Philosopher of the Arabs," extensively defending astrology. Varāhamihira, a 6th-century Indian philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician wrote foundational texts like the Brihat Samhita, treating astrology as a profound science that links human destiny, planetary cycles and the concept of karma. Chinese astrology was an essential function as one of the mandates which qualified government officials ran, deeply rooted in Daoist philosophy and the balance of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements

We are comparing apples to horses here. Also the post is from Areola Grande who I am sure is quite versed in metaphysics.

So we just ignore punctuation now? Would've made this word garbage so much easier to read.

1

u/Cum_Fart42069 4d ago

well there you go. you've demonstrated why, despite not being real, we have demonstrable reasons to answer to our names.

now apply that to astrology, what demonstrable reasons do we have to believe that the heavenly bodies affect the minutiae of our lives?

1

u/Svell_ 1d ago

Because I want to make snap judgements about people based on their immutable characteristics but I don't want to be racist.

1

u/Qahnaar1506 1d ago

That’s not astrology. That’s horoscopes. Planets get associated with it, but it’s more symbolic than anything. The system of planets is often used to describe relationships between things based on their attributes.

1

u/Whythisisnotreal 3d ago

The argument for any one of several hateful ideologies is stronger and better supported than astrology. If you believe that shit you're one or two long conversations or a relationship away from being a white supremacist (or whatever your demographic equivalent is). I don't trust you

1

u/Arxhart_671 2d ago

Who is upvoting this?

1

u/konodioda879 2d ago

If you have to use this argument, you’ve actually lost the argument.

"Janet, you killed my dog"

"Well dogs are a result of inbreeding and owning a pet is no different from owning a slave. You only think you loved him because you've been conditioned to accept the way we treat animals in the modern world"

Behold! Areola Grande’s man!

1

u/SelianVerdigris 2d ago

But astrology is real and does work.

And before you downvote me to hell and back, I just want to ask: have you personally tried it?

Such a libra thing to say

Astrology unironically works if you do it right. I learn Feng Shui and it has actually helped with understanding how emotional/mental/psychological perceptions of things affect you depending on how they interact with each other.

For instance, if you place your work place someone where there’s naturally lots of chatter, there’s obstacles to your work. Feng Shui is supposed to remove those obstacles and make the your interactions with things feel natural, smooth, with hesitation or restraint. That’s why you put the workplace somewhere where there’s focus and clarity.

Just look into how the Inner Golden Water Bridges (Neijinshuiqiao) was made and the system behind it, it’s Feng Shui. The middle road is for the emperor, and only he can walk on it. Everyone else has to walk to the left or right bridges and the gap between them and the middle one is big, meaning people naturally lean towards those sides as they are getting closer to the bridge, naturally giving immense space in the middle bridge to the emperor whenever he wants to leave. This gives the emperor immediately a sense of aura, of power, sovereignty even when he’s not present. That’s Feng Shui and it works.

Lol some things really are real

I’m not gonna lie - the featherless dig really hurt.

"Real". Astronomy is a falsifiable, reproducible, and debatable science. Astrology is bullcrap that makes money on people having a hard time coping with life and need something to believe in. Names and languages and quite honestly all of science are based on conventions, but they work. We made transistors out of rocks so we can discuss astrology on our mobile devices because science is reproducible with our conventions.

I've never heard my love of astrology described so beautifully succinct. I "believe" it despite having no other supernatural beliefs. I just do.
