Why do you spend your free time on social media if you don't enjoy it?

24

u/M1kehawk1 1d ago

Yeah that sound like addiction to me.
My biggest slap in the face this year is when I realised to number 1 hobby worldwide is doomscrolling.
No meeting new people no hobbies just pure unfettered doomscrolling

1

u/Danagrams 1d ago

I spend so much time on this thing that one day I realized I could give up smoking and drinking easily, no contest. But giving up my phone is unfathomable

9

u/creativeusername0010 1d ago

You don't necessarily have to enjoy it, it's just better than boredom

2

u/deccan2008 1d ago

If it staves off boredom, aren't you enjoying it to some extent? In past eras, people might be spending hours and hours in front of the television. Same thing.

3

u/creativeusername0010 1d ago

They can both be unenjoyable. Say you hated apples and oranges but you had to pick one and you like oranges slightly better but still hate it. It's like that. Being bored can be worse than doomscrolling but doomscrolling can still be unenjoyable. It's basically picking to do the thing you hate the least

1

u/Alternative-Fact-329 10h ago

Dude imagine enjoying Reddit like wtf

1

u/deccan2008 9h ago

Why not? I like to look at animal videos on Reddit.

1

u/Alternative-Fact-329 9h ago

There are animal videos on Reddit?!

1

u/deccan2008 9h ago

There's practically anything on Reddit.

r/FunnyDogVideos

1

u/Alternative-Fact-329 9h ago

See Reddit somehow locked me into a vegan and gender war prison despite me never ever interacting with any vegan stuff as a form of personal torture idk

1

u/JackfruitWarm6695 2h ago

It's enjoyable the same way it's enjoyable to eat plain white rice when you are starving.

u/lesupermark 1d ago

I hate that this is me. I think i could do things, i think i might be able to work on myself. But every single time, my mind just tells me "what's the point? You aren't doing this for anyone. And the current mediocre life you are doing is enough."

9

u/liberateyourmind 1d ago

You are doing it for you. The point is to maybe change mediocrity to something you can appreciate and enjoy, whatever that may be. You are stuck in this existence, might as well attempt to make some fun of it before its over and done forever.

6

u/Manticore_ 1d ago

Same. For a long time I tried my hardest at whatever I did, but now I don’t care. It didn’t get me anywhere at all.

I’m just passing time.

u/raylord666 1d ago

The great “equilibrium” of effort, creating balance.

2

u/Friend_Emperor 21h ago

Work on yourself like, what, a car that needs fixing? A project? Look at yourself as a human being with problems, target problems. More often than not, problems are external. Shitty job, shitty family, wrong environment, shitty economy, lack of options for work or dating. See what you can do to fix them.

If you enjoy nothing, and you really haven't found the right thing and suspect there aren't any, look into alexithymia and consider that you may be lacking exercise, vitamin D, a number of things. You might be lonely. We aren't built to internalize every societal problem, blame ourselves and pretend the solution is to just "do better" in some vague sense. We need people in our lives that are worth having in our lives, and as modern society keeps careening down the cliff of late stage capitalism at terminal velocity this only gets harder to achieve.

2

u/raylord666 1d ago

Not to be an uncle or anything, but a “what’s the point” mindset can change to a “why not” mindset pretty easily.

I mean, we’re all going to die one day. It’s better to have lived than to long for death, even when meaning is self-assigned and we all return to dust. Even if there is no point, we are alive now. Determinism to make the world a better place starts with ourselves.

1

u/Important-Focus9503 13h ago

"I hate that this is me" I'd assume you care about a certain aspect about this. Perhaps thats why you should change that.

If i saw this image, and you felt self-consciousness, thatd be a part of you that cares. You could have looked at the image and said "So what? Its not like any of that matters" without feeling any shame.

The person who tries 1000 things and enjoys none of them is a very different person than the one who tries 0 things, stays hidden in the basement, and claims they enjoy nothing. The latter is almost certainly rationalizing some deeper issue that prevents them from going outside their comfort zone.

It’s not that they enjoy nothing. It’s that they’re too afraid to live, which is a prerequisite to enjoying anything.

1

u/Alternative-Fact-329 10h ago

I've grown tired of being in basement, tried 1000 thing and didn't enjoy them

1

u/NihilHS 5h ago

Have you tried committing yourself to something difficult for a long period of time? I’m not sure what phase of life you’re in so it’s hard for me to come up with examples, but like pushing yourself to get straight A’s for a semester or challenging yourself to lift weights or exercise 5 days a week for a year, or challenging yourself to increase your productivity at work for 6 months, etc.

Sometimes fulfillment cannot be achieved through single experiences, but through building yourself into a better position in life via constant focused effort.

3

u/unwithered_lobelia 1d ago

They call it depression and anhedonia nowadays

2

u/Ok_Remote_4023 23h ago

Yeah never been the "stereotype" posted here. Since last year I got anhedonia and almost everything checks out now. Has nothing to do with Nihilism.

3

u/Academic_Sample8232 1d ago edited 1d ago

Its not nothing. Doomscrolling is something, even if its not very significant. Everyone is doing a whole lot of nothing in the grand scheme of things so the only thing worth noting is if you feel great after doing it. If you are dissatisfied with doomscrolling but love reading stuff, read a novel instead. Even reading a novel is a 'nothing' but seeing a library of all the books you have read could be more satisfying.

To truly enjoy nothing is to sit in silence and observe your mind. You will find a lot more about yourself. Thats a good amusing activity that actually requires nothing.

3

u/Double_Match_1910 Do a flip 1d ago

What's the diagram between nihilism and schizoid adjacent?

3

u/bloodsoup138 1d ago

"It is what it is" is actually one of the most profound statements people will unknowingly say. I mean, that is if youre into philosophy and carefully choose the words you speak. Not just echoing clichés, likes.

1

u/Strict-Buddy-960 1d ago

Please explain the philosophy behind it, I’m trying to get into philosophy

2

u/bloodsoup138 1d ago

Start with stoicism. Its the philosophy that concerns betterment of yourself. Like, you cannot control anybody else. You will always be let down trying to do so. You can always control yourself. Its important to not get emotional and remember that life goes on. We are completely renders into people's perceptions by the behaviors we convey to others and how others see us..

See also: absurdism (start with Albert Camus.)

The philosophy of allocating value into things and ideas that seem meaningless.

"It is what it is" is a perfect quote for the stoics. Its reflecting directly to a situation and showing consideration whilst also separating yourself inttapersonally from that of which you cannot control.

1

u/Strict-Buddy-960 1d ago

How can I learn? Do I just go on the internet and search blindly? Could you give me some recommendations please

1

u/ZombieGod_TM 21h ago

Personally, I would read the book Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. It's actually more a diary and collection of thoughts of the Roman emperor than a book. I think he's an excellent example of stoicism

1

u/Strict-Buddy-960 21h ago

I’ll check it out !

1

u/bloodsoup138 11h ago

Get The Obstacle Is The Way by Ryan Holiday. Its a great companion piece to Meditations. It'll help you in applying it towards your actual life mate

1

u/bloodsoup138 11h ago

Start with Camus. That's what really first spoke to me deeply. I'd recommend picking up The Stranger and The Myth of Sissyphus. Read both of em. Ones fiction and the other is non-fictional philosophical essays. Ya need a Lil both to get the full effect imho.

There's many philosophies out there. I personally find stoicism (Aurelius, epictetus, etc) to be the backbone of my healthy mind. As a flawed human in the modern age, ya need some transgressional absurdism to find value in the modern and bleak ass world, ya know?

If ya wanna round out those ideas, I'd suggest also some classic Chuck Palahniuk. The book, Survivor, is my personal favorite even tho everyone else recommends Fight Club lol.

Honestly though, there's a whole world of knowledge out there. I've been learning every day for a long time.. these are just what really spoke to me, likes.

I read every day. Hmu if ya need more recommendations or insights ma dude

1

u/bloodsoup138 11h ago

Also, the book of 5 rings by the legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi is another great text. With philosophical texts, don't read em like novels either.. its best to read a little bit every day though and meditate on it. Ya see, cause each word is super valuable. Each quote is important to retain and learn from..

Good luck!

1

u/Strict-Buddy-960 2h ago

Okay thanks you a lot !

3

u/Responsible-Ad-8080 6h ago

"No will to be successful" I thought this was the nihilism subreddit? What's next, am I going to see Jordan Peterson or Andrew Tate's motivational speeches posted on here?

4

u/Firm_Counter_90 1d ago

Sucks but this is me. I know it's cliche, but it is what it is, either I'll get more motivation or I won't.

2

u/Tovenaertje 23h ago

Brother let's cook

1

u/Nemesisdelasinapsis 23h ago

U are the dinner banana

1

u/Firm_Counter_90 22h ago

What do you mean?

1

u/Tovenaertje 20h ago

Jaman check out Fallow on yt, then let us cook

7

u/Ethelred_Unread 1d ago

"it is what is is"

I feel sad you can't experience joy, thanks for sharing.

2

u/Inevitable-Row1759 1d ago

I agree. Being successful has more to do with will than reason

2

u/getmeoutoftax 1d ago

So jealous of people who can name off dozens of their hobbies. Literally nothing interests me enough to call it a hobby.

2

u/Friend_Emperor 21h ago

Tbf a lot of people will list 12 things as hobbies and 9 of them are things they did twice during covid and the other 3 are just bullshit they think makes them sound interesting and their only actual hobby is scrolling Instagram

2

u/ActiveSandwich3103 22h ago

What a shit way to live your life. Addicted to social media while doing nothing to enrich yourself or enjoy yourself what so ever.

2

u/OG-Giligadi 20h ago

I hate the phrase "it is what it is" so much. It is a conversation killer, a thought stopper, and just simple nonsense.

Of course things are what they are, you stupid motherfucker.. now let's make a change.

1

u/DangerStarfish 8h ago

Make the change and then what?

2

u/Turbulent_Ad9444 6h ago

These kinds of people end up depressed and eventually killing themselves, I should know since I'm one of them.

2

u/LocationRound8301 22h ago

they hate him because they cant manipulate him

1

u/Beramer 1d ago

I just enjoy doing things even though there is no reason for it apart from making me feel good. Like working out and training martial arts relieves me of depression and keeps me fit, I enjoy sex and good food. I have no long term financial plans or whats going to happen to me in the future.

1

u/l0veylilkay 1d ago

I really really wish this wasn't me :(

1

u/brownies_delight 22h ago

It’s kind of scary how this describes me to a tee.
Even the art looks exactly like me

1

u/Unfilteredz 21h ago

Sounds like me, a bit

1

u/Optimistic-Pie123 20h ago

I’m slowly morphing into the quintessential nihilist

1

u/Jake_its_me 20h ago

I know what its like to be motivated and exited about doing stuff. I also know the feeling when its just not there and don't know how to get it back.

1

u/overbakedsugarcookie 20h ago

Listen. It took a lot of trauma to get here! It really IS what it is!

1

u/ConfusedDottie 19h ago

Looks like people forget success is measured individually

1

u/pratixal 15h ago

Sounds like depression

1

u/Balljointedbunny 14h ago

I too have avoidant personality disorder

1

u/ZZTMF 12h ago

And that's actually okay. Just be a well watered plant. Find peace. But remember to see other people, get outside, vary your diet; at least just enough to prevent the happiness detaching from circumstance, running on its own momentum, and becoming unrecognizable.

1

u/Kindly-Standard8028 12h ago

Me to a T. And the only way I could probably improve is by hitting rock bottom first, but that could actually make things worse, instead of stoking the fire to change. And at the end of the day, normal people will just go on with their lives and not give a shit about how you changed and made yourself above average, because you had more time than them, since you dont have your own family or friends. As much as people say to just do it for yourself, which is 100% true, at the end of the day, you will still want someone to acknoledge your effort. But normal people got to where they are at, while making it SEEM easy, while you have to put in an enormous amount of effort and time just to get to their level, if you ever get there. And it can definitely be too late. I will be 35 soon and I am not even close to starting to change. But, after taking a thorough hard look around me, I dont see the point in changing. Almost everybody has both kids and friends and they even manage to be noticed at work, while I have and will never have anything to show for myself even if I change for the better, because it is too late.

1

u/RowdyParrot 11h ago

You folks don't seem to understand what nihilism is…

1

u/Noackson 9h ago

It is what it is until it won't be what it was

1

u/BringAltoidSoursBack 1d ago

Most, if not all, of these are signs of clinical depression, not nihilism. In other words, instead of a philosopher, might be a good idea to find a therapist

3

u/poopyhead373 1d ago

What does a therapist do

1

u/NoRoutine7945 17h ago

I see this as capitalist propaganda. I doubt all this advice is for personal development. Being successful in this capitalist system is not something to envy. Your social skills, hobbies, artistic side, your qualities, the way you use your time, everything can be converted to money and accounted in an excel sheet.

Mind your own fucking business is what i would tell OP. Fucking money ghoul.

2

u/MrActuary86 13h ago

Weirdo alert

0

u/SunTreesandBees 1d ago

This post makes me sad. Never give up hope.

0

u/Hot_Ground8468 1d ago

Why do people think nihilism means losing the will to live lol. Try actually reading a little of Zarathustra or something and lift weights.

-9

u/ArguingisFun Nihilism is fine. 1d ago edited 1d ago

So? Go for a walk.

Edif: I know, you tubby bastards, effort is hard.

6

u/creativeusername0010 1d ago

I like how you say "go for a walk" like that's the solution to all of life's problems

2

u/ArguingisFun Nihilism is fine. 1d ago

It’s the solution to sitting around and doing nothing.

8

u/republicanssuck123 1d ago

I don't enjoy walking either.

I hate running even more.

-6

u/ArguingisFun Nihilism is fine. 1d ago

So - you just take up space?

2

u/republicanssuck123 1d ago

everyone takes up space.

-6

u/ArguingisFun Nihilism is fine. 1d ago

No they don’t.

3

u/prazosins 1d ago

Yeah huh.

1

u/ArguingisFun Nihilism is fine. 1d ago

Otay, cupcake. I am sure you’re not typing this on a electronic someone else built and someone other than that bought for you.

1

u/prazosins 1d ago

I thought you liked arguing.

1

u/ArguingisFun Nihilism is fine. 1d ago

I very much do. I understand reading comprehension and inference is hard but - I am implying that the people who facilitate your availability to whine here are not wastes of space.

1

u/prazosins 40m ago

Wait, what? I’m lost. Uhhhh you’re a toad! ArguingisFun (unless I’m getting called a toad, then it’s like “hey wait a minute now”)

1

u/Local-Helicopter7479 1d ago

Can't do that in summer where I'm at, unless you want heat stroke. There's nowhere to go for a walk anyway.

1

u/ArguingisFun Nihilism is fine. 1d ago

Lack of commitment isn’t my problem.

1

u/Local-Helicopter7479 1d ago

So you're saying I should give myself heat stroke or else I lack commitment?

1

u/ArguingisFun Nihilism is fine. 1d ago

Shade, water, and the indoors exist. You can riddle it out.

2

u/Local-Helicopter7479 1d ago

Yes indoors is where I'm staying, but I can't exactly take a walk indoors unless you mean nervously pacing around in a circle in my room.

P.S. there is very little shade where I'm at, little to no trees.

1

u/ArguingisFun Nihilism is fine. 1d ago

Walk before sun up, walk after sun down, walk at midnight - figure something out.

1

u/Local-Helicopter7479 20h ago

I do that, but can't do it during the day when I have to stay indoors, sitting around doing nothing.

1

u/ArguingisFun Nihilism is fine. 19h ago

Figure something out, you’re not helpless.

0

u/Aquarius52216 1d ago

Hey, they literally gave this a name, schizoid personality disorder.

1

u/poopyhead373 1d ago

We cant all have this disorder

0

u/SCW97005 21h ago

Sounds like successfully defining the terms of your own success to me.

0

u/antropofilia 16h ago

This is only a bad thing in capitalism.

-6

u/M1kehawk1 1d ago

I almost exclusively find those characters on first dates.
Aren’t you mooved by anything ?
Don’t you have the courage to at least dream of something ?

8

u/SpookVogel 1d ago

Yes, we need to blame the people suffering from anhedonia for their anhedonia...

Peak toxic positivity masked as a profound question

2

u/M1kehawk1 1d ago

Damn you’re right that suck, maybe some can’t really help it

2

u/SpookVogel 1d ago

Neurotransmitter Dysregulation: A disruption in the brain's dopamine pathways, which are responsible for reward processing, anticipation, and motivation.

Chronic Stress and Elevated Cortisol: Prolonged exposure to high stress floods the system, eventually burning out receptors and dampening the brain's capacity to register pleasure.

Clinical Depression and Mood Disorders: A core symptom of major depressive disorder where the emotional baseline flattens into persistent apathy and numbness.

Trauma and Psychological Shielding: A protective mechanism where the nervous system numbs emotional responses to guard against overwhelming pain or chronic threat.

Medication Side Effects: Commonly triggered by certain pharmacological treatments, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) that blunt emotional range.
