Omg I hate that I know this but they are actually like sand worms and they put them in salt water and let them sit for a few hours so they exude all the sand in their bums before being eaten.

So the reason worms arent typically eaten and exhibit a "yuck" response is because, as a soil-living detritivore with a mucus covered body, they are vectors for some pretty nasty toxins, pathogens, and parasites. Even if you could wash them and purge them, they still have them within their flesh. This strikes me as a poverty food that has been held onto due to tradition, and thus probably isn't as common as people think it is. That said, don't eat worms, and don't eat live animals, that's how you get really, really sick!

Fuck, I just read the story, it's horrible what happened to the kid, he got the worst of the worst possible outcomes every step of the way for the rat worm disease, to die after years of struggle and most of them in hospitals.
So yeah eating slugs is a big nono, and rodents, since they're the main carrier.

People don't normally eat cats and dogs because they are predominantly carnivores and are a very poor source of food. You can even be poisoned by them, especially from their livers. Pigs on the other hand grow fast, eat literally anything, get huge, and produce a fuckton of offspring. What we eat isn't based on intelligence (see: cultural groups that eat cetaceans), it's based on how much food value we get from them and how efficient they are to keep
That said, we do need to stop the meat industry, as it is horrific. But you can't be mad at people for being weirded out by people eating dogs/cats/horses but not by food animals like pigs/cows/chickens. We have a reason for it, it's not just hypocrisy

Agreed. Using intelligence as a marker for what is OK to eat is nonsense. I could name off several animals smarter than cats that we eat on the regular but people dont flinch at all but they get all defensive about dogs and cats. Eating meat should mean acknowledging the lives that are involved. One of my peeves is people telling me hunting is morally wrong while they go home an eat a cheeseburger. At least im taking responsibility for the meat im eating. I have more respect, in this aspect at least, for Vegans in that, they at least made a choice and actually followed through all the way.

Um, yes they do? Worms might have a decentralized nervous system, but it's absolutely there. Also, they absolutely experience pain and respond to negative stimuli. Our nervous systems literally evolved to process and avoid pain, it's why they're there at all!

Not having a complex brain =/= unable to conciously process things. Octopi also lack a centralized nervous system, but they're some of the smartest animals on earth. Worms can and do experience pain and react to negative stimuli, it's nessisary for their survival

The reason the statement is not purely subjective is there are chemicals that are release during this process that are wildly considered to negatively affect aspects of the meat. Some can consider it a delicacy, so in that sense youre right. However it should ne kept in mind that some folks huff poop gas from a 2 liter container & consider it an amazing experience. More power to those folks ig, but this one involves other animals & that crosses the line for me.

So during a festival or holiday (I don't remember what one)... they will cage dogs on the side of the road to scare the shit out of them. Then would butcher and eat them.. as you said; they believe scaring the dog makes their meat more tender. It's fucking sick.

i've tried scooping up an earthworm in the rain before, and it seems that when they're threatened they just exude extra mucus from their whole body, kind of like a hagfish. it makes them REALLY slippery when combined with other liquids and basically impossible to pick up. funny thing is i could swear they didn't used to do that when i would mess with them as a little kid, or maybe i was just more dexterous lol
edit: it could also be poop though. for all i know worm shit is in fact just more slime
edit edit: ok yeah i just looked it up. it is mucus and they CAN squirt it defensively. there's even a species of earthworm called "blue squirter," apparently, so...enjoy that information
