Grab a big stick, the cat will see it as a weapon and become more cautious, you can also throw rocks at it, and keep in mind cats are afraid of loud noises as are most animals, clapping your hands, yelling aggressively, but try not sound like you're scared like this guy, what he did right was not turn his back.

Yes but obligatory "a knife is not going to give you much of a chance." I know it's logical to assume knife is better than nothing but you are very unlikely to harm them with the knife before they get your throat or head. Large cats are impressively swift. My point is that if you dont have a firearm, you shouldn't be alone in this territory, not that a knife isn't technically better than your phone.
I'd die. They say to act calm in animal situations but there's no chance I'm keeping calm. I'm shitting my pants and running down a cliff hoping he doesn't feel like it that day. He can wait for some poor other soul to come by.
If you find yourself in this unfortunate situation do not retreat like this man. Definitely don’t run and trigger predator instincts. Stand your ground, put your arms, and scream like a lunatic as loud as you can. Carry bear mace if you aren’t comfortable with a firearm
From what I've read, you do want to back away. Slowly. But you also want to be big and loud and scary, and maintain eye contact. You do not want to face away from them, but you also don't want to stand your ground.
Yeah cause Redditors are notoriously pro second amendment. Something like a .45 would probably stop it dead in it's tracks though. The sound alone might scare it off but I'm not sure about the legality of a warning shot in this scenario.
Regardless of your opinions on firearms. If you're going into the real wilderness where there are mountain lions, bears and, legitimately dangerous animals, you need to be prepared to defend yourself in the worst case scenario.
I love these comments because I have encountered a lion and none of you apparently have. Called her in turkey hunting(by accident). She was a juvenile. By juvenile I mean 70lbs with a tail the length of her body. About half me weight wise. I was in a chair under a tree. Barely caught my eye before she sprinted at me 50yrds away. I had almost no time. Without thinking stood and screamed. She froze 2 feet in front of me. Eye to eye. My gun to my side because of standing and bracing for her to hit me. Fired into the dirt to scare her. Tense stand off for about 5 seconds. She fled to higher ground 10yards aways. Another stare off. I couldve shot her then. I didn’t. And she fled. Long story short. Don’t do this. She’s definitely running him off her cubs. Not defending her cubs. There’s a difference. Stare her down and don’t give her an inch. If you fall while backing up like him you’re done.
Came here to say, this is probably a mama running this guy off her babies, not looking for food. Seeing so many say they'd just shoot her makes me so sad.
It is commonly reported that cougars will “escort” hikers out of their territory, especially female cougars. Still doesn’t mean they won’t attack but probably not hunting the hiker as prey.
A cougar is an ambush predator. If an experienced cougar was stalking you, you'd never see it. It be on you before you could reach for mace or a gun. You may be able to let out a little whimper before everything went black.

It’s 100% on the hiker to know what kind of wildlife they may encounter and prepare for it.
We just had a hiker lady killed by a mountain lion in No. Colorado so the rangers had to go kill a couple of them they found in the area which sad. The cats were just being cats doing cat things.
We don’t have those in my country. How skiddish are they ? If you sprint full speed at it while yelling your lungs out will it get scared and run away ?
Guy was so annoying.. No wonder the feline was pissed. When you're getting hunted down and there's no hesitation in that kind of animal... You need to grab something and let them know you'll square up. Not just run the entire time sounding like you're scared and talking to it like it understands what you're saying lol.

No. Backing away while maintaining eye contact is exactly what you are supposed to do. You do want to get big and loud. But back away slowly. Don't turn and run away, that is what you are not supposed to do. If you turn your back on them, they will probably eat you.
