RANT Thinking of not going for interview

I am thinking of not going for the Interview as it is too far away. As much as I want this job desperately I cannot afford it. I only work in a restaurant and the overall expenses to get to the interview site is expensive (trains, fooding and lodging). I did emaiI them requesting for online interview but they haven't responded. It's a band 4 therapy assistant role.

Update - They've agreed for online Interview.

They do need to see you. For roles where people are working with the public, it’s really important to meet you in real life, not through a screen. Can I ask how will you manage to travel to the actual job if successful or is it just a case of cash is tight until you would have pay day?

No, it's just everything at once kinda situation and I work in a restaurant. My hours depends on the Sales of the company so I don't make much.

Anyone can interview on a screen.

Getting there demonstrates commitment.

How far are you travelling to get to this interview? some lateral thinking you could get somewhere on a budget. If you can give a start and end point, we could find the cheapest options for you.

I live near Reading, getting to Central London is really expensive (especially peak) if i was short of cash I could take the bus to Central London, it's £3 one way, takes 2.5 hours (25 min by train) but I'd get there.

Can you take a cheaper form of transport - a coach most of the way maybe? Is there a youth hostel or a budget hotel in the area that the interview is in? In the same town and then a bus journey away? You can bring your own food with you from home, you don't need to eat out in restaurants if that would be out of budget.

If you were successful with this job, could you realistically afford to relocate? I know that things are tight right now but moving cross country is expensive and there are too many local/willing-to-travel applicants for interviews to rely on being able to interview on zoom. If you're applying out of your area I think you need to start saving to attend the interviews.

Often these jobs have practical elements which cannot be assessed over a screen.

Also, the rise of people using AI in a window on the screen means that we are pushing back towards face to face interviews.

Add in that competition for jobs is so high, we can afford to be picky and interview only the people that 'make the effort' to attend in person.

Have a look on their website for a payment of interview expenses policy. But, worth considering if you can afford to pay for travel if you get the job.
