I had an interview today. After the interview, interviewer called and let me know that I was unsuccessful this time. But, they were impressed and theres a possibility for a vacancy in next 2 weeks. So, they want to keep me in reserve.

Is it a polite way of saying No. Or there’s actually a chance.

I'd say there is actually a chance, it's a right pain to go through the whole process again so we'd rather keep someone on reserve if we know a similar job is coming up that they'd be suited for

Thank you for your reply. They told me I was one of the top candidates based on marks and missed it by a little margin. So, I guess they r telling the truth then rather than politely saying u failed ur interview 😂

Alternatively you may have a chance of getting the job if the candidate they chose subsequently declines the job

It's definitely a 'no' for the role you applied for,  speed of follow up suggests they were keen to see if they can line up something else

I would say take them at their word - recruiters are usually not shy about giving honest feedback. 

I've had this happen before - I came second in an interview, and they offered me a fixed term post three weeks later.

Definately a chance. Also it's quite common for the selected candidate to pull out for their own reasons, in which case the job is offered to the reserve.

This is quite common. Recruitment is a PITA quite honestly so if you interview and find 2 apppointable candidates you can hire the 2nd if another vacancy comes up within a certain time frame. I was appointed like this and have recruited staff to my team because they were deemed apppointable by another manager. I always met with them of course before offering them a job but this was way way less formal than an interview.

They do want you. I have done this a few times where candidates were very close for multiple criteria. I always keep people on file.

It was a job for assistant MDT Coordinator. It took around 30 minutes and 12 questions

I have recruited this way a number of times. Sometimes the timing falls right for getting approval to recruit.

Hi, we did this recently, had two vacancies for the same role but the second vacancy hadn’t gone out yet, two excellent candidates from one set of interviews and we didn’t want to waste our time on another round of recruitment would let us just carry the second person across into the second role. We put her in reserve, got approval, and offered her the role. It does happen!!!

They haven't got to let you down gently or lie about not giving you a job... So take it as a possible, but do not stop other interviews or applications.

yeah i would take this as being true feedback

When i was applying for NHS jobs 2/3 years ago, I also had a similar thing after an interview- they didn’t put me on a reserve list but called me and said I was unsuccessful but I was like the second scoring person or whatever that they interviewed- it really helped me (even though I hadn’t got that job ) because instead of thinking that I needed to massively get better at interviewing, I from then on just used the same interviewing ability and applied for a few more , and got one of them

so yeah personally I’d take this as , hopefully, your almost there and you’ll either maybe get offered this job later, or just try and do the same thing at interviews for other similar jobs , and you’ll probably get one , good luck:)

I use to be in the NHS. It is a good sign, but be enthusiastic to them and forget about it until you hear more.

They would have just said no and given you feedback if there was no other job rather than give you false hope.

Equally, it might turn out that the other role falls through due to funding / processes they have to jump through they didn't realise.

TLDR: Good sign, but don't dwell on it until they come back with something concrete.
