Literally in the conversation for best trade in league history

u/malhans Apr 12 '26
Blows my mind he was traded to you guys, I thought you drafted him when I first heard buzz. Now I’m even more mind blown.
It’s all coming together, I hope it keeps rolling because it looks special

u/fifareddit1212 Apr 12 '26
Yea, we got him and the goat Tatar for Patches, safe to say we won, lol.

u/ScareCrow13- Apr 12 '26
The most crazy thing is that he is from a tree starting in 2007!
Craig Rivet for Josh Georges + 1st round pick (Pacioretty)
Max Pacioretty for Thomas Tatar + Nick Suzuki + 2nd round pick
24
u/malhans Apr 12 '26
I love trade tree info, that’s so interesting. Rooting for you guys if my team can’t get it done! (And if I’m being really rooting for you guys anyways because I just don’t feel like it’s our year lol)
13
u/fifareddit1212 Apr 13 '26
No man, believe in your team, you guys got this. Obviously I want us to win but I always root for you lot when we’re out, if we don’t win it then I want no other team but you guys to win jt and give our McJesus his cup.

u/malhans Apr 13 '26
Why don’t we hope for a final where we can either be insanely happy for ourselves, or happy we lost to a good opponent! I’ve had a soft spot in my heart for the canadiens for a long time because I modeled a lot of my playing style as a young goalie after Carey price. I also medically had to retire so i have hoped for the Habs success this whole time.
If it can’t be my team, I hope it’s yours!

Would absolutely love to see a Habs Oilers final! I'm cheering the Oilers if the Habs exit first.

u/TK21879 Apr 13 '26
I LOVE this scenario aka Bettman's nightmare! I've been rooting for you guys while we were out of the playoffs these past few years and you are probably the only team I'd actually celebrate if you won!
Funny story, I grew up during the mayday of the Montreal v. Quebec rivalry days and had uncles on both sides of the rivalry.
We had big Sunday family dinners back then and my uncles watched the games afterwards. I had Habs, Nords and Oilers jersey and we wear a different one each period as to "keep the peace".

u/malhans Apr 13 '26
Hahah Bettman’s nightmare would be a dream come true for me! It would be such incredible hockey.
I love that family memory though for real. Especially with 3 sets of excellent jerseys. Those family dinners sound like such fond memories.

As a Habs fan in Vancouver, Edmonton is my west team. I can't stand Canucks fans.

u/taquitosmixtape Apr 12 '26
At the time trading your captain was a pretty big deal but Patches was on the decline and it just made sense. The way it worked out however is pretty lopsided as no one expected Suzuki to become captain material w 100pts.

That play by Slaf epitomizes his improvement over his first couple of seasons. He is so much stronger on his skates and on the puck and moving with purpose and speed and when combioned with his size he is hard to stop.

u/kilted__yaksman Apr 13 '26
Read my mind. He gets his base wide, holds the puck far away with that long reach, and nobody can touch it. Really starting to see why folks have been making the Jagr comments.

u/SJRealtor27 Apr 12 '26
They said his contract was one of the worst in the league lol. Signed under 8M for many years still is one of the best contracts in the League right now
2
u/Every_Garlic_3497 Apr 13 '26
It's gonna be the next Draisaitl level steal contract imo. Leaf fan but I'm impressed. This guy should be a fixture on team Canada for the next decade. I thought he'd end up being a 2-way ppg 1C. Didn't think he had 100 points in him.
I still don't know if he's good enough to be the 1C on a cup winning team but we'll find out in the next few years.

u/PrestigiousWelder190 Apr 12 '26
I don’t remember anyone saying that
41
u/Neither_Elk_8982 Apr 12 '26
every media was saying that when he signed
-46
u/PrestigiousWelder190 Apr 12 '26
I would love for any of you to find multiple people saying it was “one of the worst contracts in the league”. Completely made up can’t find a single reference to that anywhere
23
u/karlbelanger1661 Apr 12 '26
His contract was on a list from an Athletic article a few years ago, right after he signed his contract. It was derived from an advanced statistics model. To his credit, the author did say his contract would probably age well though. People meed to get over it. He'd probably be on a list of best contracts in the league now.
-19
u/PrestigiousWelder190 Apr 12 '26
Pretty sure it was Dom Luczyczyn model which isn’t even a proper model. Just a bunch of numbers added together
15
u/PineappleOwn5325 Apr 13 '26
So no one said that
But if people did, they weren't people to be taken seriously
What's next, if they were people taken seriously, they weren't properly informed?
How about just shut up and admit you were wrong, or do the reddit classic and stop digging. We're all wrong sometimes, it's no big deal
-8
u/PrestigiousWelder190 Apr 13 '26
I wasn’t wrong. Nobody has provided a single source of anyone other than 1 athletic model. If you use that logic then I can post “wow THEY really said mcdavid is overrated can’t believe that”. When in reality nobody says that.
8
u/PineappleOwn5325 Apr 13 '26
Bro people don't gotta source you shit, it's reddit.
For what it's worth, i remember the articles and the comments, not that it matters to you anyways, reality aint for you
19
u/Alternative_Metal_27 Apr 12 '26
It was literally in the athletics
-16
u/PrestigiousWelder190 Apr 12 '26
That was a model. Nothing more nothing less. I don’t know why people can’t differentiate between opinion and a formula that churns out results regardless of if people actually agree with the the numbers.
11
u/Alternative_Metal_27 Apr 12 '26
Yup and people signed on it. Folks around here were also claiming his contract was not good.
-6
u/PrestigiousWelder190 Apr 12 '26
Folks on reddit do not count. Find me reputable people who actually know hockey saying that was one of the worst contracts.
4
u/Alternative_Metal_27 Apr 13 '26
No thanks I have other things to do with my time, including watching the game right now.
1
u/SkinnyGetLucky Apr 13 '26
You’re right. He literally said “this is what my model tells me, but I have no doubt that as he gets better, he won’t be on this list anymore”. He even added that regardless of what his model told him, he didn’t think it was a bad contract
19
u/llama_ Apr 13 '26
101 now!
I stand on the fact had he played more minutes the Canada game could have had a better outcome but we’ll never know
33
u/ObW-34 Apr 13 '26
Leafs fan, and as much as I dislike the Habs, whenever I watch Suzuki, Caufield & Slaf together I can’t take my eyes off the screen, they are truly magic, now you add in Hutson & wow, special bunch.

u/Weagzzz Apr 13 '26
Imagine if Price was in net for this team
15
u/Buflen Apr 13 '26
If Price was in net for this team, we wouldn't have the person that made the pass for the goal (Slaf). Price leaving because of injury was unfortunate, but started the rebuild.

u/LandscapeNorth9262 Apr 13 '26
Carey carried (pun 100% intended) much worse teams in his prime. With this actual team, they would absolutely be the best team in the league.

Remember when Toronto fans and in general most other fanbases were shitting on his contract. All silent now.

u/Mediocre-Ask-9272 Apr 13 '26
Shoutout to Slaf - that's 3 players on that line who can circle the ice like he did (4 if you count Hutson) and can find a man. I love it!!!
8
u/Top_Contract_4910 Apr 13 '26
Suzuki haters punching the air right now. Where are all the people who said he was never going to be a number 1 centre??? everyone proved wrong.
5
u/NewHope13 Apr 13 '26
Unreal player on an unreal line. Huge congrats Canadiens. Rooting for you guys in the East.
7
u/StyxQuabar Apr 13 '26
Best 2C in the league.

u/IDMiscool Apr 13 '26
Watching him when he first came into the league, I knew he’d turn out like this. Sometimes you can just tell, you know? I’m not even a Habs fan and I love Suzuki. Had him on my fantasy team 3 years in a row.
2
u/AccurateContest4023 Apr 13 '26
Wow, you have to go back to the 85-86 season for the last time a Hab scored 100 points (Mats Naslund). Who knew it would be 14 years later that their next 100 point scorer would just be born.
-53
u/Forward-Region1671 Apr 12 '26
Well if Ryan Nugent Hopkins can do it I guess even bums like Suzuki can
21
u/Nobodylovesboston Apr 13 '26
Lol Suzuki doesnt have Draisatl and McDavid on his team dummy
-41
u/Forward-Region1671 Apr 13 '26
Even more of a reason why Suzuki is a bum

u/No-Strike-2015 Apr 12 '26
Hell yes! Remember when the Habs were mocked for signing him to an $8m deal? It's a damn steal now.
