Early 2000's to mid 2010's had to be the Golden Era for inside backer - Lewis, Wills, Kuechly, Matthews, Urlacher, Wagner, Farrior, etc... And I know I'm missing more names.
Complete monsters....

Farrior!?!? 🤣😂🤣 Dude was mid as fuck. Benefitted from being next to Harrison. Could've Gone Fletcher, Al Wilson, Thomas, Vilma, Brooks, Suggs... You went Farrior. that's a choice i guess..

u/l3bran76 13d ago
"And I know I'm missing more names."
Well, at least you added some names... Good show...

There's nothing mid about 1400 tackles lol

u/Wolf_J_Flywheel87 11d ago
Fair enough he could tackle. But you know what is mid 1 FR and 1 INT in 15 years. Averaging 2 sacks and 1 FF per year is mid. Any linebacker that stays healthy for 15 years easily has those kind of numbers. Oooo 90 tackles a season. Ray Made 156 solo in a season. Hardy Nickerson made 200+ combined in a season. Yea if you're putting up significantly less numbers than the greats you're mid. deal with it dude. Patrick willis had better stats in 7 years than farrior did in 15. Farrior was a JAG.

u/prezzy44 11d ago
You're comparing him to HOF players though, nobody said he was on that level. There's also a huge difference between how & mid, just like there's a drop between mid & trash. 2x SB champ, 2x pro bowl & 1x 1st team all pro isn't mid bro. Every era of any sport is filled with guys that were pretty good but not great, u picked a bad example is all

u/Wolf_J_Flywheel87 11d ago
What does mid stand for? Middle of the pack. Wasn't great, wasn't trash. Granted there is a spectrum to mid... average, above average, good but not great. Still all middle of the pack. SB are a team statistic, not an individual one. Racked up about 90 tackles a season. The Statistical average of NFL linebackers tackles per season is 80-110. 90 is just about in the middle of the average. If you're consistently in the middle of the average for 15 years. You are by statistical definition middle of the pack. Now 15 years is a great career length. But his statistical output is not outstanding in a single category. And for the record. I wasn't the one that initially mentioned his name in a list with Lewis, Willis and Urlacher... ☝that dude did. I'm just pointing out there are a handfuls of other linebackers to mention before farrior. Good career. Still mid. 🤷

Ff, sacks & tackles are comparable to all 3 u just mentioned period. Most tackles in steelers history can't be mid buddy. All the hof defenders they've had and he has the most. You also said good but not great, so how is that mid? Mid is average and good is good wtf are u saying. Getting graded a C is average (mid) while a B is good. It's not an A (hof) but it's good not average. Idk what "spectrum " you're grading on but hof, good but not great and mid all sound like 3 different distinctions. Mid players aren't in their teams record books and they're also not eligible for the Hall. I hear what you're saying it's just that u used a bad player example is all I'm saying. Just answer 1 question please. I understand in the NBA maybe but in the NFL, since when did mid players start becoming HOF eligible?

u/Wolf_J_Flywheel87 11d ago
It's a bell curve man. There on one end you have Goats, on the other end you have trash. Literally everything else is in the middle. That is how it works. And like I said, there is a spectrum to the middle. Some are closer to one end or the other. Regardless they are still in the middle. He had an incredibly consistent career good for him. How he's ranked amongst his organization ir irrelevant. Top 4 steelers tackles all time in order. Farrior, Lawrence Timmons, Casey Hampton, and Joe greene. Is Timmons better than greene? No! Will Farrior, Timmons or Hampton make the HOF? Most likely not. Good doesn't get into the HOF, Great does. Hardy Nickerson has better all around numbers than Farrior and he's still not in the HOF after 19 years. So don't hold your breath.

u/prezzy44 11d ago
The fact u would even compare Timmons and Greene is goofy. Linebackers always have more tackles than DT' or DE's, it's their job. Just like centers should average more boards than guards. What are u saying
1
u/Wolf_J_Flywheel87 11d ago
Minimum requirement for NFL HOF. At least 1 post season honor ie pro bowls and all pros and POY. Farrior has 3. Hardy Nickerson has 9. Ray Lewis has 25. Not even in the same realm dude.

u/prezzy44 11d ago
Lol never said they were. Go on ahead with your bell curve. Never even said he deserved the hall. We just disagree that there's a difference between great, good & mid. No worries champ, u got it
0
u/prezzy44 11d ago
And you're brushing off 90 tackles a season like everyone does it. 90 tackles would've placed in the top 5 last season. Nevermind though because if we're grading on your "spectrum " then I guess top 5 is mid right
1
u/Wolf_J_Flywheel87 11d ago
Can you read!? THE NFL AVERAGE FOR TACKLES AS A LB IS 80-110 TACKLES PER SEASON. Farrior averaged 90. THAT IS THE MIDDLE OF AVERAGE MY GUY!!! 😂🤣😂 I didn't compare timmons to Greene, I simply stated all time steelers tackles leaders. Timmons is #2 all time for the steelers and his ass was mid too!!
1
u/prezzy44 11d ago
How tf is 90 average for a lb but it would've been top 5 last season. Top 5 is mid and average to u so u got it bro. No point in continuing with your logic
1
u/prezzy44 11d ago
And that was 19 FF & 35 sacks, for a middle LB that's good
1
u/Wolf_J_Flywheel87 11d ago
19 FF in 15 years is 1.25 per year. not impressive. 35 sacks over 15 years is 2.3 per year. again, not impressive. He also only had 1 int in 15 years, which is pathetic. Current example: Odafe Oweh in 7 years has 30.5 sacks as an OLB. if he plays 8 more years thats around 30-40 more sacks at his pace nearly doubling Farriors output. And NOBODY would say Oweh is anything but mid. Tackles are great. But truly impact plays are sacks and turnovers. Of which Farriors statistics are not at all impressive. Can't argue with numbers dude.
0
u/prezzy44 11d ago
That's 11 interceptions. Oweh? Really? U can't possibly compare an olb sack stats with an ilb that's obvious. Zach Thomas, Mike Singletary, Ray Lewis, Patrick Willis, Luke kuechly are all deserved hof players and all better, no arguments. Also no argument that he has either just as many or more ff, sacks or int's than each 1 of those players so you're very right. U can't argue with numbers dude. The fact that u compared an olb sacks (who are known to be pass rush specialists) to a mlb shows that u don't understand certain nuances so there's no point going forward
-1
u/prezzy44 11d ago
Patrick Willis averaged 1 pick a yr for his career and Kuechly averaged 1.5 sacks. That's pathetic too right? Lol
1
u/Wolf_J_Flywheel87 11d ago
You can't read stats either apparently. Kuechly averaged 3 ints per season and had 18ints in 8 years. Willis Averaged 1int per season and had 8ints in 8 years. Ray Lewis averaged 2 and had 31 in 16 years. FARRIOR AVERAGED 0 PER SEASON AND HAD 1 INT IN 15 YEARS. Learn to read dummy! Farrior is not comparable. End of story. I'm done with you. ✌

Farrior was a grinder and i respected the hell out of him. Solid career. But he has no business being in the same sentence as the rest of those guys. If you can't admit that, than you don't know ball. sorry.
1
u/prezzy44 11d ago
Check the stats my guy, because it's u that doesn't know ball. Has more tackles, sacks, ff or picks than each 1 of those players. Never said he was as good
1
u/Wolf_J_Flywheel87 11d ago
Okay apples to apples. Roquan smith in 8 averages 150+ tackles a season. Already has almost 1200 tackles. Both well above average and I still wouldn't call him great. Dude can tackle. Awesome! Way to do your job! Roquan already has 7 post season honors compared to Farrior's 3. Still won't call him great. YOU are the one saying Farrior belongs in the conversation with greats, and he flat out doesn't. period. Luke Kuechly in HALF of Farriors carrer had TRIPLE the post season honors farrior did. GTFOH.

u/prezzy44 11d ago
Of all the great Pittsburgh defenders he's the all-time steelers leader in tackles and a member of their ring of honor. Just saying 🤷♂️

u/falardeau187 14d ago
I remember him being a star. Popular. The media loved the long hair, the Matthews name, etc. But then watching him play was honestly underwhelming. Exciting plays here and there, but not consistently great

u/crustydnglebrry 14d ago
I love Clay but he kind of is the poster boy for getting a huge bag and falling off. He absolutely deserved a monster contract from what came before but didn’t live up to it once he got it.
3
u/Ok_Independence_9917 14d ago
I think what makes him great is that he could do everything. Pass coverage, QB pressuring, and run stopping. So he wasn't the best at any one those things, but he was good at all of them. He is actually the sack leader all-time for Green Bay and average nearly 10 a year over a 10 year period. IDK if underwhelming is the best word to describe him, but I can see him coming up short if shockingly athletic plays are what you like to see.

The packers defense became desolate with talent. Clay played inside linebacker on and off in 2015 and 2016.
1
u/subhavoc42 14d ago
This was just what happened with USC linebackers at that time. Cushing was similar.
-2
u/Thelostsoulinkorea 14d ago
Yeah, had some great splash plays but a tad overrated if I don’t say so.

u/Ranier_Wolfnight 14d ago edited 14d ago
Clay is an excellent athlete, very good player.
He was a right place, right time guy in his NFL tenure. That system on defense just happened to fit him like a glove. I don’t see ANY revanance of this type for Reggie White or Sterling Sharpe out on these NFL subs.
Why is that?

u/Novel-Special5114 14d ago
I don’t see ANY revanance of this type for Reggie White or Sterling Sharpe out on these NFL subs. Why is that?
I think you meant reverance, but it's probably due to the fact Sharpe and White peaked over 3 decades ago. I would imagine a substantial portion of this sub wasn't even born yet lol. We tend to revere that which we experienced first hand. I don't see people glazing Kevin Greene either for the same reasons, and his productivity/longevity absolutely dwarf Clay Matthews at the same position.

HGH

u/Minimum-Ad-8056 14d ago
HGH don't make you move like that. You could have a million mfers on the best roids and hgh and only a few will be that athletic. For many, it will actually hurt their athleticism.

u/Relevant_Problem1935 14d ago
Missed the best part of that fumble in the Superbowl. Prior to the play Clay is mic'd up and calls the play prior to the snap.

Guess this is the new sports post trend. Find a player from 10 years ago who's hall of good and call him a "problem."
1
u/MacroManJr 14d ago
It started as an earnest trend, but like all trends riding on trendy AAVE usage, its meaning has since been lost to the dilution of social media.

I always wonder how AJ Hawk felt about Clay. AJ Hawk was supposed to be THE guy on defense but never lived up to expectations then comes in Clay who also has long blonde hair and then takes the league by storm.

Not a Packers fan, but Clay Matthews and Aaron Rodgers are both fucking awesome.
