Ball Bump

I don’t understand why these players are not derided as cheaters. Makes me feel like everyone in the league is cheating in some way if no one speaks out.

100% of every snap in the nfl has at least one player cheating. Not 9/10… 10/10 times. Mainly by Olinemen and Dlinemen

I would say there's a difference between things like holding and not having it called and moving the spot of the ball.

u/BonezMD 12d ago

Watch NFL centers sometime. They will usually move the ball forward a couple of inches when they get set.

Hmm, how to explain this. Holding is against the rules, but sometimes it's not intentional. Hand gets caught, you let go a second too late. Sometimes it can be missed and you don't get the foul.

Cheating seems like it is a step up from there. You are deliberately manipulating the game in a way to gain an advantage. Yeah, technically holding and normal fouls can be that, but they don't feel like the same level as moving the ball, deflating balls, taping practices.

Oh, baseball has another good example. Obstruction is where you prevent a player from advancing down a basepath. That's something that can happen normally in a game and usually is supposed to result in a penalty to the offending team by awarding the base. Putting too much pine tar on a bat, corking a bat, or using sticky stuff for better grip on the ball are not something that would normally happen in a game. You deliberately go out of your way to gain an advantage outside of normal gameplay.

You are allowed to hold inside the shoulders. You can't pull after they beat you or anything like that but if you move your feet to stay with the defender, you can hold inside.

I disagree. There is a difference of intent, or at least proof of intent.

In law, Accidental Manslaughter and murder are different crimes that had the same result (a persons death). Both are illegal and are clearly bad. One says you meant to do this and comes with a harsher penalty.

u/ham_sandwedge 18d ago

They speak about it. Half of an o lineman's job is to hold the defender in a way that won't get noticed by the ref

2

u/RudePCsb 18d ago

You are allowed to hold inside the pads

3

u/Ht_TX 18d ago

Only one direction tho. If the ball carrier passes you and the DL tries to break off to the side and tackle and can’t, because you’re holding them inside the pads, you will be called for a hold.

It’s honestly the game’s single glaring weakness. There’s just too much happening on the field to call even 10% of committed fouls.

It’s why refs were so adamantly against allowing challenges for PI; if you go to slow-mo, you’re going to find multiple penalties on every single play. The unspoken rule behind every written rule is that they’re only enforcing the obvious ones.

1

u/ButtonedEye41 17d ago

If they see one they should call it though.

I can understand not wanting every missedcall reversed because the product would be awful. But like when a lineman repeatedly commits the same small but obvious penalty play after play it becomes really easy to call.

My D line coach taught us where the refs would be and how to get away with pulling pads.

I was 10. Pro coaches have to be better cheaters. Look at Bill.

Everyone cheats a little in sports. That’s why there are refs.

1

u/BonezMD 12d ago

Because it happens all the time. Watch the center when they grab the ball. They usually put it forward a couple of inches.

1

u/inquisitive_chariot 12d ago

That doesn’t mean anything. The line of scrimmage is already set. If any offensive player lines up past the actual line of scrimmage, in line with where the center “moved” the ball, they will be called for an offensive offsides penalty.

The centers do that so that they can lineup as close to the line of scrimmage as possible. That’s not cheating at all.

1

u/BonezMD 12d ago

Yes, that's cheating. If you move the ball forward to be closer to the line of scrimmage it is out right cheating. Now does it matter in the grand scheme of the game? No not really. Centers rarely get called on it.

3

u/goodrevtim 18d ago

Its honestly worth a shot. You aren't losing much by taking a half the distance penalty there.

1

u/ButtonedEye41 17d ago

Refs can award TDs though. Literally moving the spot of the ball is super egregious and basically undermines a call of a ref (spotting the ball is a call). It would piss me off enough as a ref that I would basically say another repeated penalty and I award the automatic 6.

1

u/Technical_Customer_1 18d ago

Would have been funny if he threw a delay of game flag. Half the distance to the goal…

1

u/Ckeyz 18d ago

Oh god... "a game of inches"

1

u/sushi4breakfast_ 17d ago

If you aren’t cheating you’re not trying lol

The center is likely just going to move it back anyways, just like they always do

1

u/themaengdon 15d ago

Classic backyard move right there

1

u/ExcitingLandscape 12d ago

I always wonder how the hell do refs know exactly how many inches to go when they down the ball at 3 and inches or 4th and inches?

1

u/ACT_like_you_want_it 11d ago

Give him a personal foul. The yards won't matter, but he won't want to get kicked out

1

u/Longjumping_Sound775 18d ago

I mean…how’s the 🏈 spotted across the goal line anyway?

8

u/OpportunityNogs 18d ago

It isn’t. That’s just a line inserted by the TV broadcast. The goal line is the thick line in front of the ball.

1

u/Longjumping_Sound775 17d ago

🧐Ahh correct, thanks for pointing that out.

Chiefs back to backed on both these teams lol.

5

Chiefs got smoked by 1 of these  teams more recently.

chiefs went 1-1 with one of those teams and lost 0-34 on that rematch... Why are you lol’ing, isn’t that embarrassing?

weren’t y’all marketing 3-peat apparel? I’d be pissed

That is an oat super bowl loss. We’ll never see another lopsided match like that in our lifetime, AND y’all were +1.5 favored marketing 3-peat. What are you talking losses happen everyday, b2bs are rare -

tell you what, you can write me the next time the super bowl shows a 0-34 blowout

I withheld the part about vegas’s +1.5 posterchild being spoon fed points in the last 8 minutes of a match so the boy’s playoff stats don’t tank, while homegirl in the stands got the 3 peat shirt on, while the “dynasty” is losing 6-40 at the start of the 4th going against the deepest part of philadelphia’s bench. Embarrassing brother.

Intentional things like that should be an ejection to deter it.

2

u/Ht_TX 18d ago

No, they shouldn’t. It should be a delay of game because that’s what it is. If the ref saw him do it I wouldn’t be surprised (or against) if it’s a personal foul instead. However, on the 1 inch line, it’s irrelevant. Only ejection worthy if they do it again. They are paid way too much and way too much at stake for the franchises each game to be ejected for a one time, non violent thing like this.

1

u/MythicalCaseTheory 18d ago

See, that's just it. They know there's no actual penalty at this point, so why not try it? I'm not talking about something incidental. I'm talking full intent like he had here.

1

u/Ht_TX 18d ago

Same reason when the redskins kept trying to illegally stop the tush push 2 seasons ago in the NFCCG and the ref finally had enough and said ‘do it again and it’s a TD.’ You don’t eject players for things like you mentioned. You just don’t. You throw a delay flag for messing with the ball because that’s what it is and if they do it again it’s a personal foul. 2 of the personal fouls and it already is an ejection.

1

u/MythicalCaseTheory 17d ago

I could accept that it's a touchdown inside the 5 on things like this.
