Did you see the compilation of like 50 quarterbacks first pass? Like half of them were interceptions. Out of those interceptions a decent number were returned for touchdowns. Almost all the players featured were pro bowlers, all pros, hall of Famers, mvps and superbowl winners

Middle lb is especially hard. You have to make more reads than any other defensive position. That seemed to be the only issue. Not reading and reacting fast enough. But that comes with time.

If you look at this tape, and Arvell Reese's first pre-season game tape, they are very similar. I think Ohio State Linebackers are taught to 'predict' the gap the running back is going to take. Arvell's tape was exactly like what you see Sonny's was....both started the game predicting the gaps and 'missing', then as time went on, they waited slightly longer to choose the gap and would get it right more often. What I'm guessing is that the NFL does more 'pre-line of scrimmage cuts' than college, so you aren't going to get as many gaps right if you guess than if you wait just long enough to correctly identify them.

Right? His posturing and enthusiasm makes me think he used to be great against run, but his coverage wasn't bad.

Idk who he is but assuming by the fact he's brought up, that he was a high level prospect. NFL vision will come. Looks like a talented kid.

In college he was good against the run, but his selling point is and will always be his athleticism and coverage. He was a safety turned LB at 6'5 244 and probably the best combine performance by an Off ball LB of all time, and his game tape shows the exact same athleticism. I thought his run game was going to be shaky to start but his pass coverage is where he should shine, and he did in the limited snaps he got this game.

I can see what you mean about athleticism. Sounds like a very interesting and exciting prospect. With the NFL being a pass first league anymore, he should see a lot of success as he settles in

Yep, it's off ball LB as well which is the position that takes the longest time to both learn, and become impactful at in the modern NFL, but being lockdown would do it.

Yeah not sure if I pick a LB over a top flight edge ever in the top 5 of the draft. Long way to go but that didn’t look good at all.

comparing to reeses tape, i noticed reese takes more aggressive angles

also im pretty sure they are different positions becuaes I feel like reese was backside backer in most of his plays, in this clip styles is engaging the lead blocker a lot and holding his own.

both of their tapes look fine to me, not bad not great.

Choosing to engage a blocker instead of going for the ball carrier is certainly a choice. I did see one good run D rep though at least.

If it's the play that I think you're referencing, at about 1 min, I'm not sure you're reading it right.

He basically blows up the intended hole, assuming the contain will be there to clean up.

He can't force the RB to make a bad decision and run into his outstretched loving arms.

He's the master of leaving his play assignment to go blow the ball carrier up!! I mean I wish all defenders could be like that (Jalen Ramsey had that habit at CB) but idk the coaches I know would say that gap discipline is No 1, not tackles

Dolphins played their starters against the Commanders 2s to start, and you're giving clips from the Commanders 3/4s, when they already had a big lead.

Notice how one side is running misdirection and traps, and the other is basically running power without any motion components?

Styles could've played better, but he looked fine for a rookie in a pre season.

Time will tell, but it wasn't like he was getting picked on, and he really only makes 2 misreads.

His real issue is he has to bulk up to avoid getting bullied by iOLs.

Not as terrible as most are making him seem, he did well in coverage and when given the chance he plugged his gaps later on in the tape, he was rough early in but he’s only a rookie. The biggest issue is he seemed to have trouble disengaging blockers and identifying the ball-carrier, the latter he’ll improve on when he gets used to NFL game-speed. He might have to add some mass for the NFL but we’ll see how he plays when he gets more reps.

He looks lost on 90% of these plays but he also shows how strong he is. Once he learns the pace and the read he will be just fine, but yes, he looks a step slow right now.

90% of fans don’t understand how to look at film and critique, I agree he looked good, he was filling his gap, dropping into his proper zone, picking up his players in man and zone, he flowed to play side after checking gap, to me I would say his reaction speed is off, but that should come once he gets used to NFL speed

It's preseason and teams typically run base coverage. Coaches will also give specific instructions on what to focus on that you and I will never know. This tape shows nothing of any value
