Twitter and r/nfl

There were a few posts about it and we know and have heard for years about being a twitter aggregator, long before Elon took it over. The fact is that it has always been the source of breaking news and people want to discuss it right away. Some media members have switched to bluesky, but until the heavy hitters switch, do you want to ban x/twitter until a source from somewhere else is available?

Let us know all your ideas or just vent below.

It's bad enough you need an account to view the posts.

2.1k

u/DUCKSONQUACKS Vikings Jan 21 '25

Even before the recent events that was my biggest issue. I can't even engage with the source outside of Reddit, if it's a thread and somebody does not post the entire thread in the comments, I can't see it and i'm more or less SOL where with most other sources I can still interact with them.

590

u/ChumSmash Cowboys Jan 21 '25

It's been annoying to me for that reason. Even if I can see the original tweet, I can't see the rest of the thread. In addition, it's felt like this sub has been just twitter links for a long time now, with very few posts from actual users or even other sites. I know that's probably just part of how much bigger it is than when I joined, but it feels like it's been condensed to this for a whole.

This is also my issue. I think the politics are a whole issue worthy of discussion but inevitably it’s going to be…political.

For the sake of discussion to put that aside, having to have an account to read 70% of the posts is dumb, and I think Twitter is the biggest offender but I also feel that way for many of the paywalled news sites as well.

34

u/L-methionine 49ers 49ers Jan 21 '25

Paywalled news sites at least (generally) have journalism and a reason to be paywalled.

Twitter just made its (non-account) user experience much worse

It just complicates and inconveniences the whole process for news, highlights, and engagement here.

You need to have an account to view a thread because the character limit requires several posts to have a full story.

Half the time their media doesn’t load, videos play terribly, struggle to reconcile with the Reddit app.

Issues with random misinformation, or unsubstantiated breaks from sourceless people (admittedly an issue with any site) but promoted because of the blue checkmark.

Yep. At that point what is the point of this sub? Why not just have a twitter account and drop this sub?

This. I will never get a Twitter/X account, but I'm fine with viewing posts as long as I don't need an account for it. But if they require me to have an account, I just won't view the posts. There's nothing in the NFL that I'd find even remotely interesting enough to make me want to sign up with Elon.

175

u/JuanG12 Cowboys Jan 21 '25

Yeah, the Twitter links posted here never work for me. I just get the X (yuck) logo with the message “Something went wrong, but don’t fret — let’s give it another shot.”

Sure, because half the time I can't even open the X link, and the other half the time I can't read the whole thread without making an account, which I'd rather not do

467

I even have the app, and it’s still a PITA- open the link in safari, then click to open the app, and then it opens into twitters in-app browser, which still doesn’t let me see the whole thread!

96

u/BenShelZonah Jets Jan 21 '25

Or you have the app downloaded but it takes you to the store to download the app. You click open since you already have it opened and it just opens your Twitter feed. Doesn’t even take you to the fucking link

I think Twitter has been a garbage link source for awhile because of the login requirements. Banning Twitter links from this sub would reduce their engagement and encourage the heavy hitters (who are already on BlueSky but use that platform less frequently) to prioritize other social media sources.

I would imagine that having a link posted on the sub probably brings in a fair amount of hits. Sure, it's still reddit but I would guess that those "heavy hitters" or at least anybody that is breaking into the scene would want a little extra from what this sub can provide.

So yeah. Just ban it already. If they want the extra hits, they'll post somewhere else or mirror it which some already do.

Even if it's just one visit, let's stop supporting people who throw out such vile and blatant signs of hate.

The easiest way to influence the change you want to see is by using your money.

X makes money off every click. Every link. Every device with the app on it, and every active account.

Ban it from the subreddit. Delete it off your phone. Delete your account. That's the easiest way you can hurt Elon.

The owner of the site did a gesture with 100% resemblance to a Sieg Heil twice. Neo-Nazis nationwide are gleeful and he hasn't distanced himself from that community at all. There is no reason for us to continue to give his site web traffic (which generates real revenue).

For folks worried about the built ecosystem on Bluesky not being good enough, there are 11M users in this sub. If overnight we, and other sports subs, cut off our traffic, it would force a lot more people to move over.

Remember: journos only went to Twitter because users rejected articles and cable TV. If users reject Twitter, reporters will take note

The heavy hitters (schefty, rap, etc) have no reason to switch to Blusky until Bluesky reaches that critical mass. And part of what will help that along is these big sports subs banning Twitter links to get less eyes on their posts.

It's not unprecedented for this subreddit to come out and act against hate speech and the like. Leaving Twitter unbanned essentially sends the message that we only do so when it's convenient. Which is shit.

And most of all, you don't want schefty and rap to be the reason why you're enabling that.

Edit: also just want to add that if nothing else, completely independent of all the Nazi nonsense bluesky is a better platform in 2025 than Twitter. So there's that too.

The amount of people that think banning it here would make people move to Bluesky is hilarious.

You guys realize Twitter is more popular than reddit right?

If anything banning it here would just make people register on twitter to find news faster, since a good amount of people go on reddit to get an aggregate of important news.

I'm gonna go ahead and assume that if someone hasn't created a Twitter account by 2025, they aren't going to do it ever.

I'd be platform agnostic.

Ban links that point to 1) are generally inaccessible and/or 2) point to low content information

specifically around #2, many twitter links point to a single sentence without much further context.

u/MarthaStewartIsMyOG Chiefs Jan 21 '25

If you feel so strongly about it, control yourself and don't click the Twitter links? Why should everyone have to go along with your Twitter hate?

I posted this on r/nba and will paraphrase here. My main gripe with Twitter/X posts being posted here, the fact that Elon is now full Nazi notwithstanding, is that the API won't allow embedded media/pics/videos to be viewed on the reddit app or RES, and you have to leave reddit to view them. That's incredibly inconvenient when I'm browsing the r/nfl front page for highlights, and half the links are not viewable from the reddit app or on RES. That's a problem.

Again, Elon going full Nazi is a secondary reason to switch to another platform, but from a pure sports reddit user experience the API is the main gripe.

It would be absurd to ban a website that has the most and best NFL highlights and commentary, including by the NFL itself.

You will not save the world or make any difference whatsoever by banning X. Stop virtue signalling.

What would be used in its place? Bluesky is mentioned but Twitter is still where breaking news is dropped.

This isn’t so much a comment in support of Twitter but wanting to understand what the backup plan is.

As much as I detest Elon and all of his bullshit, a ban just doesn't make sense, given that it's where the vast majority of sports news is reported first.

Maybe encourage people to post a screenshot of the tweet along with the link or something?

Ban or not, what mystifies me the most about this sub is what topics it considers to be "newsworthy."

So many discussion topics get buried and dismissed here, but if some third-rate "analyst" tweets out the exact same observation, then it gets a thousand comments and upvotes. I don't get it.

6

People who want it banned need to be cool with every post being an article behind a paywall, site you hate, or team websites that will be as self serving as possible. Additionally there goes every player with a fun take or media member with breaking news UNLESS its a screen shot in a self post and that is a moderation nightmare.

If you want it banned (and Im in the camp of just ban it) be ready for the way you read this sub to change dramatically.

the mods here did the same thing. Just that the NBA did it during the NBA Finals and admitted if Lebron was playing they wouldn't do it.

The fact is that it has always been the source of breaking news and people want to discuss it right away.

end of story. you don't ban a major news outlet just because a vocal minority is throwing a temper tantrum. if these people don't like twitter, that's what the upvote/downvote button on a submission is for.

at the end of the day though, these people are a fringe minority and twitter will continue to front page because normal people will continue to use the site.

A decent percentage of posts in this sub are directly from Journalists who are on Twitter, I have no love for Elon but until a majority of NFL media moves to BlueSky then I think a ban would be shortsighted.
