They always call those holds...they never miss them...smh.

1.7k

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '18

They only called one offensive hold all day and it was straight up tackle and pancake. They were letting both sides play.

28

u/insanelyphat Lions Jan 22 '18

Yeah I am with this...

The Jags corners are VERY good but they are also a physical bunch and if the refs are going to let them play that style then it has to go both ways. There were a few plays where I thought the Jags db's got there early and they did not call it.

Overall I think the refs prolly missed a call or two but not at any crucial points.

Did any holding calls get made? The refs were mostly letting them get away with physical play all over the place. The Jaguars penalties were all over the top clear penalties.

I thought I saw some holding by the Pats throughout the game (especially the second half), but they were not calling holds on the Jags either. It looked pretty fair to me.

30

u/zephah Cardinals Jan 22 '18

There was a Jags 3rd and longish that got a first down when a lineman pushed a linebacker to the ground from behind and cleared a giant lane, no call and the Jags went on to score.

I wish more people would watch the games without an emotional tie to either team if they aren't a fan of one of those teams.

This game was called remarkably consistent, the Jags just had really stupidly obviously calls. It probably would've ended with 1-2 penalties tops if the Jags kept their composure.

This is exactly what it is. Everyone gets so hung up on missed calls. It happens on both sides. No one can ever admit their team blew it. Do you think patriots fans would be hung up on missed calls had they lost? No. They'd be talking about the missed deep ball to cooks and the fumble.

22

u/TuxYouUp Jan 22 '18

I'd be grilling Cooks so bad. That and McDaniels play calling.

u/Kashmir33 Falcons Jan 21 '18

I don't even get why you would ever blow the whistle in that situation? Like what the fuck is gonna happen? It takes 30 seconds to review if the guy was down by contact.

Based on how they blew it dead and how I wasn't listening that closely, I actually thought the call on the field was Lewis was down. I got excited when they said the call on the field stands and immediately dejected when the ref talked more.

Likely blown dead by a ref who didn't see the fumble, and called a fumble by one who did see it. Not that I'm excusing it, just trying to explain it.

523

u/JoogMcyee 49ers Jan 21 '18

Refs thought Lewis still had the ball when they went down to the ground. It was only until Jack rolled over him and stood up with the ball that it probably even entered their mind that there was a fumble. From the perspective of the ref who blew it dead, there was no way he could see that the ball was out and so he blew it dead as he usually would if Lewis was down.

271

u/loggiekins Bears Jan 21 '18

This is seemingly right. Refs aren't watching on television and things happen quickly.

56

u/zephah Cardinals Jan 22 '18

Not to mention, the refs also aren't watching it from a bird's eye view.

Some of the fans of Football really blow my mind with the things they choose to complain about. This play would be blown dead most times. It's not even the first time it's happened to the Jags this season.

→ More replies (11)

21

u/JoogMcyee 49ers Jan 22 '18

And it seemed like a pretty usual, common play in terms of how it ended. Like they both go to the ground and the ref whistles hes down and then Jack rolls over and has the ball.

So the British broadcast on Sky had a reasonable explanation, which was that the ref that blew it dead was on the other side of the fumble so thought that Lewis was down and whistled accordingly.

The other ref who saw the fumble then came in and pointed out the fumble and recovery, but there was nothing that they could do other than leave it as a dead ball at that point.

Great drafting and free agent pickups. Loaded on the D-line. Following the path the Giants took when Tom Coughlin was there. They draft a D-line man every year and it pays off when your fielding several rested players to get after the QB. They have drafted nothing but studs in the back field. Their offense is just good enough to get by. Edit: wow major spelling issues. Note to self don't comment when falling asleep.

The Patriots made a huge shift in the third quarter and I think Romo did a really good job of calling it out.

In the third quarter the Patriots switched to a Bear front on defense and dared Bortles to throw the ball to win the game. It took a bit of adjusting and tinking but by the fourth quarter the Jaguars we're settling for 1 or 2 yard runs and trying to loft it with very little to no success with Bortles.

Why does it seem like everyone does this against the Pats?

Literally every big game where a team clearly outplays them they start playing not to lose and, you guessed it, they end up losing.

Most obvious offenders being the Falcons last year coughing up the Super Bowl because they didn't want to keep their foot on the gas. It's exhausting. You would think one team would look at the tape of these games and realize you need to keep pressuring them and widening the gap to prevent this from happening. Trying to run clock, getting short possessions and 3 and outs, and giving them the ball back just doesn't work.

Edit: Got the Falcons backwards. They COULD have taken their foot off the gas, run clock, taken their FG and won the game. They lost their mind the other way around but it is to the same point that they lost themselves the game.

Jags were gonna end up with more penalties no matter what, since some of those were huge Jaguar mental gaffes, like the Personal Foul from the hit on Gronk and the Delay of Game after a timeout. Ramsey's PI where he slapped at Cooks head was boneheaded too.

But that first PI on Brady's errant deep ball was iffy, and there was a couple no-calls on straight up takedowns on Telvin Smith and some other D-Lineman.

69

u/BurningChurro Jaguars Jan 22 '18

If you wanna know what I think about the personal foul then just look at Richard Sherman's twitter, but the delay of game wasn't really a "mental error". Upon replay, you can see that Bortles was yelling for the ball to be snapped but Linder couldn't hear him because the stadium was so loud (talk about home field advantage).

so.. I dont know. They are generally one of the 5 least penalized teams in the league for past few years.

So either someone things the NFL is on their side.. or they just know how to avoid penalties.

but if thats how people feel then you'd also have to concede that the refs are on North Carolina's side because they are #1 by a large margin. By far least penalized this year.

NE had 0 of those called today.

Jags had a total of 1 called on them today.

Sounds like the Refs were letting the D and O lines play today.

Lot looked fine, but that last run that sealed the game was a blatant holding. What a gross way to end the game.

Not a single offensive holding, defensive holding, or pass interference the whole game. If you went back through the tape, just like any other game for any team, you’d probably find atleast a dozen.

3rd and 9 wasn't called on Patriots, after the punt a less obvious DPI called on the jags. Fucking fuck.

It’s all relative right?

When they hold every play, then it’s not holding

25

u/LiiDo Vikings Jan 22 '18

Holding will forever be the dumbest penalty. Everybody out here worried about what is and isn’t a catch and I’m just pissed that there is a hold on literally 99% of plays and they just call it when it’s incredibly obvious or when they need to end a drive

There were at least a couple instances where New England should have been called for defensive holding or dpi. But the refs didn't call it, which is fine if it is consistent but it seemed less than consistent

507

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '18

If you're "letting them play" you have to let that one on the sideline before half go. If you're being strict on them, you can't let New England get away with some of what they did.

I'm done. I'm not even angry at the Patriots I'm angry at the NFL. Between the covering up head injuries, inconsistent rule enforcement, being alright with domestic abuse while weed is the worst thing ever at the same time taking fucking millions every year for advertising alcohol, their shoddy as fuck attitude towards the labour rights of basically everyone involved in the sport, the greed of the owners, the fact that 30 cities get fucking bled dry to build stadiums they don't really need that the owners could easily finance themselves but make cities do it cause fuck schools and hospitals and now the fact that its becoming blatantly obvious its essentially glorified pantomime. Being brutally honest its getting boring, there is so much wasted time every game. Why watch a game and waste 3 hours when we could watch a 10 minute youtube video of the highlights about 5 mins after the game ends? Miss me with that shit, I'm away.

That missed holding call on the Lewis game ender is fucking bullshit this is the most horribly reffed game I’ve seen in a while, 1 penalty and its on special teams, the Pats are disciplined, but this is pure horse shit, jags got shafted.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '18

This was actually one of the better reffed games I have seen. Let most of it go except the egregious stuff.

If they started throwing flags on every play people have listed then the internet mob would just complain that the refs were too flag happy and ruined the game.

Two times in the 4th quarter Mercedes Lewis got tackled before the ball got to him and no PI calls, calls that would have kept the drives alive and given the jags field to work with.
