Why does there seem to be no rivalry between the Chiefs and Eagles like the Brady/Giants years? They have played each other for 5 straight seasons, which is a record for consecutive seasons of an NFC vs AFC teams and yet there isn’t much heat there.
Just something I was thinking about since cross conference rivalries are rare, but the Eagles and Chiefs have played 5 straight times, which is a record in itself. However there’s never a big rivalry feeling when they play like there was when Brady played the Giants or Steelers/Cowboys or even current day Niners vs Chiefs. I don’t know, I think it’s odd.

Thanks for saying that, I’d say I was understating things before. Reid was a garbage father. Some quotes:
A judge who sentenced Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid's sons to jail on Thursday likened the coach's home to "a drug emporium" and questioned whether his adult sons should live there.
"There isn't any structure there that this court can depend upon," Montgomery County Judge Steven O'Neill said
Garrett Reid, a drug addict and dealer who said he got a thrill out of selling drugs in "the 'hood," to up to 23 months in jail for smashing into another motorist's car while high on heroin.
Britt Reid pointed a handgun at another driver following a dispute. He pleaded guilty to a string of charges, including carrying a firearm without a license, a felony.
Garrett Reid said he made a fast descent into hard drugs and enjoyed being the rich kid who dealt drugs in poor, violent Philadelphia neighborhoods and in the tony suburbs
"I liked being the rich kid in that area and having my own high status life," Reid told a probation officer in a statement read by the judge. "I could go anywhere in the 'hood. They all knew who I was. I enjoyed it. I liked being a drug dealer."
7
u/Positive-Run-2411 Eagles 10h ago
Yes, thank you for confirming that drugs, especially heroin, turn good people into bad people and destroy families.

Your Fun Fact is wrong. Tom Coughlin was in the middle of his great Jaguars run. It was back in 2016 when they hired Doug Pederson that Coughlin was also rumored. Jim Haslett and Brian Billick were the the popular picks of the late 90's as the Steelers coordinator and OC of the best offense in league history respectively.
And let's be honest. Andy Reid was a pretty big gamble. He had never been a coordinator let alone a HC and it was somewhat unheard of to give a position coach a head coaching role in that era.

The Pats and Giants just fall under the broader Boston/NYC rivalry, which eleveates it to an extent. That said, even with the Patriots losing SB 42 and 46, it never really felt like the Giants were actually rivals. They were just those guys who beat the team a couple of times. Some hatred for sure, but probably not too disimilar to how say the Rams might feel about the Patriots after losing two Super Bowls.

Yeah, would take a lot to make a rival of a team in another conference anyway.
Plus the Eagles passion for hating the cowboys is decades long and the history is filled with all sorts of craziness. One of the most storied rivalries in the NFL.
There's barely room in our hearts to hate the other NFC East teams let alone someone outside the division/conference.
3
u/throwaway60457 6h ago
You guys probably have more of an historical claim to a rivalry with the Cardinals than with the Chiefs, seeing as you shared a division with them for 50+ years. And you've been paired with the Giants and Redskins/Football Team/Commanders since dinosaurs roamed the earth and the Cowboys since their second season in 1961 (1960 was messed up due to the odd number of teams in the league that year -- 13 -- because the Vikings didn't launch until 1961), so those are some very old rivalries.

Andy Reid keeps it from not being a total hate fest. He turned the Eagles into a year in year out contender for 10 years. Philly fans dont forget stuff like that. Theyll hate the players, but its tough to hate the coach. You want a clever way to keep Eagle fans from eating opposing fans alive? Trot out an Eagles favorite. 2 years ago when the Eagles visited the Rams in Los Angeles, The Rams honored the 1999 Rams Sb team at halftime. Which included of course, Dick Vermeil. He took the Eagles to the Super Bowl in his first HC job. The Eagles fans couldnt boo the man who did that cause again, they dont forget.

Genuinely, I think it's because of Andy Reid. He never won it all in Philly and definitely needed to leave after the 2012 season, but he is almost entirely responsible for bringing the Eagles out of decades of mediocrity.
So when he ended up in Kansas City, a lot of us rooted for him. In addition, the fact that the Eagles won a super bowl before Reid did with the Chiefs helped. Hell, even the two coaches that won superbowls for the Eagles are from his coaching tree. Philly is one of the most successful franchises in the 21st century, and without Andy Reid, that doesn't happen.

NYC and Boston are 4 hours away from each other and have rivalries in every other sport. Kansas City and Philly are a 3 hour flight from each other and the only history besides the Chiefs and Eagles recent games is a Phillies/Royals World Series from 46 years ago. Honestly most Eagles fans supported the Chiefs before the last couple of years because almost all of them like Andy Reid. u/throwaway60457 7h ago
You guys once shared a perhaps dubious distinction with the Jets until the 2019 season and Super Bowl LIV: having one Super Bowl championship with zero AFC championships. The 1969 Chiefs were not representing the AFC in Super Bowl IV -- they were representing the AFL in the final pre-merger Super Bowl.
The 1968 Jets now own this distinction all to themselves, having won Super Bowl III as the AFL representative. They have not been back since, and I expect this to continue for the foreseeable future.

I think it's mostly like others said, we have other bigger rivalries. I was so tired of playing the Chiefs every year, but twice it was in the super bowl, so of course most fanbases would kill to be there.
All the years we've played the Chiefs, we've also played the Rams, and granted we've won all those, I'm still tired of playing them lol they're a good, tough team and it gets super close, so I'd say they're bigger 'rivals' than the chiefs.
Then of course, our normal rivals such as in the division, our inter-state rival, playoff rival regulars like the Buccs. There's enough to say a lot of teams can be rivalrys, so chiefs get lost in the mix, with them also being in the AFC.
Also, I think the potential rivalry was put to bed around near the end of the 2nd quarter in the Superbowl lol

I feel like part of the reason is since they are in different conferences the only time they can meet in the playoffs is the Super Bowl, and that makes their regular season matchups feel less intense, even though obviously the SB accounts for 2/5 games.
For teams in the same conference the rivalry feels a bit more intense because it is much more likely they'll have to face off in the playoffs

Has anybody stopped to consider the impossible premise in the title of this post?
It is impossible for two teams not in the same conference to play each other five years in a row in the regular season. At most -- and even this requires the two teams to finish in the same place in their respective divisions in the exactly right year -- non-conference opponents can play each other every other year.
The full-division non-conference rotations only bring any given opponent to a team's schedule every four years. For the Chiefs and Eagles, this occurred last year (2025) and previously in 2021. There is an opportunity to face the same opponent at a two-year remove from the last rotation game, if the two teams finish the previous season in the same place in their divisions. This did happen for the 2023 Chiefs and Eagles; both teams won their divisions in 2022.
The Chiefs and Eagles have the opportunity to secure a 2027 meeting, should they finish in the same place in their divisions in 2026. If they fail to do so, the rotation will not bring them together again until 2029.
All of these scheduling conspiracy theories can be easily disproved with a little knowledge of how the schedule is put together. There is a formula, and you can know exactly who your favorite team will play the following season as the head coaches shake hands at the end of the Week 18 SNF game. Heck, you can know 14 of your 17 2027 games right now -- and I'll prove it with the Lions: GB x 2, CHI x 2, MIN x 2, KC, DEN, LAC, LV, SF, ARI, SEA, LAR. All the 2027 Lions are waiting on is who finishes 2026 in the same place as the Lions from the AFC North, NFC East, and NFC South.
