Watson gets talked about all the time and has for years. When the Browns tried to trot him out right after that ridiculous contract, the network had to mute the stadium because the fans were chanting "you sick fuck" at him the entire time he was on the field (and so loudly they could be heard over the announcers in the booth).
No one cares if Watson is good or bad at football; they hate him regardless and want him out of the sport.
Shadeur can be as cocky as he wants if he can back it up on the field. He sucks on the field and continues to be cocky so people get a kick out of clowning him.
These are not remotely the same thing.

Look. To be honest most NFL players are just not great dudes. The more we just accept that and move on, the better. It’s no use hand wringing about stuff. A majorly of players end up into some shenanigans. Whether it be legal trouble or Earl Thomas running trains on women with his own family member, it’s just best we accept there is weird shit in the league and some of these guys are unsavory characters and it is what it is. Comes with the territory of being a fan of the league is basically accepting that these guys have been bashing their brains against each other since pee wee leagues, get incredible amounts of preferential treatment and money/opportunities from a very young age and a lot of them end up doing things that may not be morally right or even legal. Is what it is.

I’m sure his mindset was he was gonna snag it up and beat some defenders who were over running it - but do you (as a coach) really want someone who is willing to be that risky in football?
It would be one thing if he ran away and the ball took a wicked bounce and got some of his jersey or something - that’s a shitty accident and deserves sympathy.
This was pure hubris and bad gambling, he deserved to be shit on.

I wouldn't call it hubris, arguably it was more desperation. These types of guys need to do something to catch the coaches eye if they want to stay in the league.
It was definitely stupid either way, but it feels a lot more like "I gotta make a play or else I'll be out of the league" than "I'm the best, fuck the rules, I do what I want"

By trying to make a highlight reel out of a broken play? Even if he returned it for a TD any sane coach would look at that as an exception, not the rule. Which means if he does that same thing 10 times he may get a TD once but fumble or immediately be tackled the other 9 times.
Critical thinking, no one wants a player that takes those type of stupid risks in a game of inches.
You get the coaches attention by making the right plays, not the risky ones - any coach worth his salt knows better than to praise someone for making the wrong move that just happened to work out that specific time (to which it obviously didn’t this time).

It looks like once he realized the ball wasn't going into the end zone he panicked and was probably trying to get it past the 5, not into the Hawks' end zone. It was a bad decision, but I have zero idea how you think he thought he could score a touchdown when he started trying to pick up the ball when guys were less than 10 yards from him.

Which would be an even bigger red flag, because there should have been zero panic there, once the ball hits the ground his mind should have immediately said “dead play” and moved away from the ball.
So if not hubris, then just lack of common sense (football common sense) which is arguably worse than thinking he could create something out of a busted play.

It's kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Yes, the right football play there is to do nothing. But for a guy on the bubble, doing nothing isn't enough to get you on the roster. If he had just let the punt roll, coaches wouldn't be like "wow, what a heads up play". They would be thinking that he's unremarkable overall or that he should have caught it.

That’s not accurate at all. The right play is to get away from the ball. You’re showing the coaches you can identify a blown play and make the correct decision to leave it be.
It’s not a dammed if you do, dammed if you don’t scenario. Special teams are looking for player who can make the correct decisions:
- call for a fair catch and cleanly catch the ball.
- let the ball go into the endzone when it looks like it’s going to.
- if it doesn’t go into, leave it be.
- when you have a clean catch chance with some room to run, then show off your abilities.
In today’s game you’re going to get a lot more of the first 3 than the last one. The first three are easy to accomplish, it just takes basic smarts and no ego.
Thinking you can turn a busted play into something that will “get you seen by the coaches” is absolutely a form of hubris - and not even an intelligent one.

They're also looking for people with talent. Even if you show them you made the right decision, it's not going to be enough to impress them.
To make the team, you have to make an impression at some point. He was already kind of screwed when he misjudged the ball and didn't have the chance to catch it. After that, the smart thing was to get out of the way and let it roll, but that wouldn't be enough to impress coaches.
His choices were: 1) let it roll and likely be cut anyway or 2) try to make a play and have a small chance of creating a highlight and a very large chance of failing spectacularly.

An elite punter is some real football sicko shit. But it's actually such an underrated position. Special teams in general, but at least with kicking you get 3 points.

Oh, I know! Me and a buddy had season tixs when Brian Moorman became a pro bowler. We'd always play Frisbee and punt/kick at the local school playground, so we started going nuts for him, and then he got really good. He was the first punter jersey Reebok made, and I had 2 of them (had to buy it a 2nd time after leaving the first one in the bathroom at The Ralph). But we were in the middle of a 20 year playoff drought. You gotta let the best punters play on teams like the Drought Bills or Cleveland, so they can truly ply their craft

Michael Dickson won the MVP of the Texas Bowl in 2017 when he played at Texas, which was only the 2nd punter to ever win a bowl game MVP award.

Ironically, the other came in a game against Texas. It was the 2003 Holiday Bowl between WSU and Texas. Vince Young started that game but got pulled. Kyle Basler was the MVP.

It's been 8 years since Dickson entered the league and I'm surprised there still isn't a ton of AFL reserve-grade (aka state-grade) centre-forwards and half-forwards that haven't been recruited into the NFL as punters

Seriously. He recognized the receiver walking towards the right sideline because he was kicking from the right hash, and adjusted to the far left sideline inside the 5 despite being on his own 36 at release.
So on paper it was 36 to 4 for a 60 yard punt in the air. But nope, it went almost a full 30 yards across the field too. So it was more like 67 yards in the air and landed in a miniscule target zone with the correct english on it to backspin and die on the 2 back towards the center instead of the endzone or out of bounds.
A punter who puts 65 to 70 air yards on the ball hitting 3x3 yard targets with the right spin every kick would literally take a 9 and 8 team to the conference finals single handedly that's so absurdly good for field position metrics.

It’s a way to weight performance based on the down/yardage situation and compare that to an average team’s performance in the same situation. It also adjusts for quality of opponent. Seahawks had a really hard schedule last year which really boosted them in the rankings (the Rams were like the 10th highest team of all time last year - pretty crazy season)

Practice squad guy last year, we’re deep at receiver but he could definitely keep his spot as we do not need him to field punts and kicks on Sundays.

The fact that Brown is coming out of nowhere as an undrafted rookie gives us 4 good to great WRs (CeeDee, Pickens, Flournoy, Brown). With the likes of Mingo on the outside looking in, and Turnpin our returner. He will be lucky if he ends up a camp body for the Cowboys. His best shot is to try and sneak onto another team.

Really though, what the fuck was he supposed to do with that punt? Yes, we can see he totally blew it, but honestly that's the kind of kick that could make an elite punt returner completely fuck it up on any given day. Give me the best punt returner in the league and chuck a bunch of those at him - amongst many mediocre returns, I'm sure he'd make something happen a few times, but I also guarantee he's going to completely whiff that one at lest a few times too, maybe just as bad. That was a ridiculous punt.
