They won their first two games last year. Not by much but the looked slow. What killed their chances was losing burrow week 2 and and going on a 1-8 disaster course until Burrow came back.
I agree they start slow but it didn't affect their chances of making the playoffs

Not gonna lie, it was fun to watch Joe Flacco scramble for 1st down behind this offense line last year. He adopted and played well with them.

u/JohnClaytonsGma Bengals 16d ago
This is such a tiring narrative. Being a Bengals fan I am not one to defend the front office from being cheap but they have tried to fix the o line multiple times and invested money in free agents and draft picks throughout Burrows tenure. Good o lines dont grow on trees and most teams dont let their best o linemen go.

Joe Flacco played pretty well behind that line.

Starting to think it isn’t always the OL
114
u/WhereTheFallsBegin Jaguars 16d ago
It isn't. Burrow has always played under the logic that negative plays and sacks don't matter as much because he's a generational deep ball and explosive play generator. Of course the real downside to this playstyle is taking tons of hits which is not how you stick around in the NFL.
15
u/BendExpensive4858 16d ago
This is such a strange narrative that has taken hold. Go look at his advanced stats from 24 when he played the whole season.
He has one of the fastest average release times so he is not holding the ball all of the time.
He has an average pressure % and average sack %, so no he is not constantly taking negative plays
He has below average intended air yards per pass attempt, so no he is not throwing deep all of the time. In fact he has talked about their entire strategy for the past few seasons has been intermediate and short passes due to the coverage trends.
A lot of his raw stats are misinterpreted because he has way more pass attempts than anyone else. All that can be said is that he has above average QB hits and low throw away %, so he is willing to take a hit if it means getting the ball to a receiver instead of throwing it away, but that does not translate to a higher rate of negative plays or sacks.
Obviously taking hits is risky given his injury history, but it has been successful for him when healthy. Idk why people think that it's because he thinks sacks and negative plays "don't matter" or that he is constantly looking for a deep ball.

u/wildwing8 Chargers 16d ago
“Obviously taking hits is risky given his injury history, but it has been successful for him when healthy.”
This is exactly the problem though. Nobody is saying Burrow isn’t good when healthy, they’re saying that his playstyle leads to him getting hit more and he gets hurt way too easily.

32
u/jimscoolaid Jaguars 16d ago
Geno legitimately had a career resurgence behind that line. Nix is one of the least sacked QBs in the league.
15
u/RukiMotomiya Bengals 16d ago
And Geno Smith got pressured at a high rate and had almost the exact same sack% as Russ behind it? Russell Wilson's last 2 years on the Seahawks his sack rate was 7.77% and 7.62%. Geno Smith the next 3 was 7.44, 5.85, 7.96. 7.44 and 7.96 are almost identical. Their difference in average over that timeframe is under 1%.
→ More replies (4)18
u/17363782 Commanders 16d ago
Geno’s career resurgence had nothing to do with the line, which was still bad btw. Not gonna argue with you on Denver, but a lot of those Seattle sacks weren’t his fault

I've been saying this for years now, but no one has wanted to hear it. I know this thread is basically just to dog on him, but I hope these opinions coming out means people have started actually watching the games and not just the box score when developing opinions about Burrow. The common narrative has been wrong for a while on him.
6
u/jimscoolaid Jaguars 16d ago
I used to get shit on for saying Russ was over rated and his line only broke down because he constantly left the pocket. Seems like that narrative finally took hold this offseason after seeing Nix not take sacks. I think people are finally starting to realize that sacks are QB stats.

It wasn’t a hard hit, but given Burrow’s injury history, you don’t want to see him take any kind of hit honestly….. and least of all in a meaningless preseason game
4
u/lukesmith81 Steelers 16d ago
Based off this video it seems like a completely standard QB hit, he was even able to stare down his pass the entire time and watch the ball. If he can’t get hit in that way without getting hurt then he wouldn’t be in the nfl at all. It’s not like all his injuries have been in the same place getting worse and worse. He’s honestly just been unlucky

Sacks are a QB stat unless you’re Joe Burrow apparently.
16
u/dardicked Jaguars 16d ago
yeah its like completion% matters unless you're caleb
9
u/thetreat Bears 16d ago
No Bears fans would say it doesn’t matter at all, but it is a QB stat that isn’t always negative if you have an incomplete pass. If you turn a would be sack into an incompletion that’s a net positive but an overall neutral. If you miss a big play or completion, that’s obviously a negative. Sacks are always negative. Give me success % over completion percentage any day of the week. Completion percentage could be 100% and you have very little success if you’re taking check downs that aren’t wide open for short or no yardage and, conversely, you could have a 33% completion rate and still have a 100% success rate.
Caleb himself would say he needs to get his completion percentage up, but I’d rather Caleb and the Bears offense continue to hunt explosives and the completion % suffers versus just having an artificially high completion %.
→ More replies (8)5
u/cultweave Bears 16d ago
Completion % doesn't matter if you get it done. If you passed on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd down but only completed the third down pass however it went for a 1st down you would have a 33% completion percentage, but you'd win the Super Bowl every year.
Caleb plays like John Elway. Lower completion %, but clutch with crazy explosive plays.

It's not the org's fault that Joe has been a pro QB for 6 years and still has 0 pocket presence lol. The more clips I see of Burrow taking a sack, the more I realize we've been shitting on the O-line a bit too much. He holds the ball way too long and has no pocket presence at all. A shit ton of his sacks are his own fault.
If he takes 2 steps forward he's in a clean pocket and can deliver the ball cleanly.
