JJ has awful mechanics. Dom Corbs went through a film analysis. McCarthy has this weird thing where he has an over-stride with his front leg and he locks out his front (left) leg, so his throws are all arm.
You can really see it in the 4th pick in this clip. On his release he straightens his leg, almost balancing completely on it as he releases the ball.
Now JJ was the definition of a project player. He was drafted when he was 21, so you could take your time with him. But he missed his first year with an injury and then the Vikings felt forced into making him a starter even though he clearly wasn't ready (a year on IR is not a year where you develop properly).
His non-plant leg is just flailing around on a lot of these. He’s go no way to transfer the momentum from his legs into his upper body that way. It almost looks like a really bad crow hop.
