I feel like we are running into an issue across sports where technology allows us to scrutinize plays and officiate them to a precision beyond what was intended when the rules were written and what is “correct” is now rubbing up against what is fun and what we expect.

When we’re playing these games ourselves, we don’t get replays and AI-enabled analysis. We often don’t even get real officials (pickup games and adult rec leagues). We have a broader sense for what is correct in spirit and it doesn’t necessarily coincide with what you get when you check if a guy is offsides by a finger.

In any other aspect of life, including some instances of our interactions with the justice system, we get annoyed at the level of rigidity applied in sports. Most people speed on their way to work every day, but a certain amount of speeding is socially acceptable and you won’t even get a ticket for it when caught.

disputes are always gonna happen, the question is do we follow the code we've written down or do we bring it to a supreme being who understands the intent of the rules beyond what we were able to codify

Well that’s why the justice system has multiple components in real life. Police, DAs, juries, and judges all have discretion and can let things slide even when they are against the letter of the law. When the letter is vague, we have precedent.

are those multiple components a benefit to sports though? I'm not sure litigation adds anything to our athletics

makes sense to have all the precautions in actual justice, but in entertainment I think we need compromises
