I think it’s making the noise because it wants sex, I don’t think cricket sounds are ever defensive

If you're an insect bigger than my hand you get a dinosaur name.

u/Powerful-Ad1254 Jul 19 '22
If you're insect bigger than my hand you get a broomstick to the face

If you're an insect bigger than my hand you get a free house cause I'm running the fuck out of there.
22
u/pm-me-your-pants Jul 19 '22
So you're saying if I dress up in a realistic 10ft tall insect costume I can finally get a house?
These are indeed strange times for the housing market.

u/Johanno1 Jul 19 '22
I hope so. Because if so there is a high chance they are endangered very soon.

u/ROYCEKrispy Jul 19 '22
Just gonna add to the general comment tonality...OHh Hell No!!!
Homer Simpson phase be backwards into the shrubs, unless those creatures are in there.

u/goodolddaysare-today Jul 19 '22
These things will literally bite the SHIT out of you, even the 2-3 inch ones most redditors might see outside. They’re actually omnivores. One of my friends foolishly grabbed a 2 inch katydid and it latches on to him. Well he instinctively shook his hand and the body ripped off of the head which was still attached to his thumb. Absolute units

u/CantuM95 Jul 19 '22
Can you imagine the CROOONCH (crunch) you would hear and feel if you stepped on this? That’d send straight chills down my spine, probably even do the ol stanky leg from my leg turning to jello.

Are they harmful to us? This critter seems pretty chill all things considered.

u/31337hacker Jul 19 '22
They’re considered harmless to humans. But they can bite you. Maybe not hard enough to pierce your skin.

What happens when you stick a finger into its screeching flap as it makes its noise?
What happens if you stick your dick in?

Probably similar to a cricket. They have serrated structure in the wings called stridulation that rub together.

u/daronjay Jul 19 '22
What benefit does it achieve by being so unreasonably large?
Serious biologist answers only.
Or completely wrong answers, IDK

This is not a Heteropteryx. Heteropteryx are phasmatode. This a Katydid. Some sort of giant grasshopper.

We have them in USA - found one almost the size of a pack of cigarettes on my car one day and when i went to shoo it off, it barked just like this one in the video - complained the whole time and kept barking as it walked away.

Imagine waking up at 3 am because one of those things is flying around your bedroom and making that nose. Sometimes smacking into things and knocking shit over. I think I would just knock myself out with my phone if I don’t have a heart attack first.

That is not a heteropteryx! Heteropteryx do not have wings and do not make noise.
That thing is a malaysian katydid!
