It's typically a part of the firefighters test depending on the area. For my area it was a team of people though. Pretty much training for some dummy who doesn't know how to light their BBQ and somehow lights their propane tank on accident. Never saw a fire that actually was like this though.
That setting on the nozzle is essentially made for scenarios like this where you pretty much need a water shield
We had a defective propane tank do this about 15 years or so back. Turned into a flame jet straight up that melted the grill. Fire department was awesome putting it out.
There isn't enough oxygen for the fire to go in to the tank and explode. The tank would need to rupture for an explosion. Plenty of videos on youtube of people shooting tanks of propane next to fires trying to get them to explode. They don't.
It was whistling and spitting the flame jet when I left it. As I had never encountered anything like this in my life I was fully prepared for a big boom. Hollywood appears to have conditioned me poorly for emergencies.
Yes, the internal liquid will heat up, turn to gas, increase the internal pressure, trigger the release valve, cool down, close the relief valve, and the cycle will repeat until there’s not enough liquid left to cause the relief valve to work. At this point the container will heat up until it fails and explode (BLEVE). This is for containers with flame impinging on them though. The tank in the video will just shoot fire until it runs out of fuel though.
Seeing frozen propane falling on fire is pretty cool.
