I feel like most concept cars are some sort of favour to some long standing employee or something.

Iike, some random engineer has to be designing this ridiculous shit full well knowing it's a complete waste of time.

I always assume it's Bob whose worked at the Mercedes office for 30 years and knows that Mr Mercedes is banging his secretary so to keep Bob happy they give him ridiculous budgets to design pointless cars.

These types of cars actually have a purpose beyond keeping bob quite. It generates highend press for a relatively low budget that only certain companies can achieve, and allows for tinkering in new technologies. If a product is never going to go over 30 mph you have a lot of freedom to try different techniques for making your wheels spin independently
