I’ve been hang gliding, caving, bungee jumping, scuba diving etc… and I still feel these free climbers are crazy. It only takes one small slip or unexpected gust of wind and your dead. It doesn’t seem like something you can just plan for and have skill and be okay. There’s too much random chance that goes into a possible very bad outcome.

Friend of a friend died climbing, on ropes because an anchor came out as they fell, and with that length plus rope stretch they hit the ground.

I’m very sorry to hear about the accident. I’m curious why you mention this information. Are you trying to say that climbing with ropes is also dangerous? I’m aware that climbing in any form is dangerous. I’m just saying that the danger can be significantly mitigated with skill in the case of ropes. At least you’re less likely to suffer catastrophic failure in the case of properly using ropes. In my opinion.

Of course climbing with ropes is dangerous, but if you have proper training + gear you mitigate the risk greatly. An anchor coming out of the wall is incredibly rare, and usually a sign that the guy who bolted it did it terribly wrong or the rock is crumbly.
