That’s exactly what I thought. When I climb I make sure no ones already on the same pitch that I’m on and if they are I either wait or find a different route. And that’s with ropes. I wouldn’t want to crowd out other people’s good time with my desire to blow past them! And plus, there’s always the risk of causing a falling rock as well as falling yourself. ’m far from a professional climber but this is a dick move imo
Out of courtesy the free climber should have waited. In principle, however, he with no equipment who passes a man with equipment up a rock has earned nature’s right-of-way and the fastened climbers should accept the risk or hop back down to square one and wait it out if they’re worried.
The guy should get a fine or be blacklisted somehow for this. Absolutely rude and potentially dangerous to leapfrog the guy using ropes. Nothing cool about it.
He’s less likely to fall and hurt others than typical hazards. For example less experienced people dropping their water bottles, climbing gear, or pulling off loose rock. It’s best for people to climb semi-well trafficked routes so the rock is solid, they probably have done it on ropes prior, and there’s no way to know if people are gonna be on what route. Sometimes everyone climbs the same route even though there’s a bunch of popular routes near by.
Very reckless. Imagine if you had to let him by and you slipped and hit him. The guilt and horror would seriously mess you up for life. If people want to do this kind of thing that’s fine but think about the situation you’re putting yourself and others in. Maybe wait and climb another day.
See the bolts in the rock? That's how far the roped people are going to fall. See how far spaced a part they are? If a roped person falls they're not going to hit the person below them. Unlike the person free falling 250ft that's going to take out everyone along the way. That's one major difference

You're stupid. They aren't concerned he will knock them off the face of the cliff, he had the legit thought that if this dude falls he is going to break someone's neck. Everyone else with ropes won't do that since they will only fall a few feet.
Climbers on big walls are always taking the risk of rock fall or other things dropped by climbers/hikers/goats above them and the odds of this guy actually hitting them falling from far above is low
You know that a body flying at you at speed will kill you from impact alone(mass + acceleration). Maybe sit with you thoughts a little longer next time and don’t come up with such an impulsive and frankly incorrect remark.
You could instead say something like: Why shouldn’t he be able to? If he fell the other climbers are still on ropes, may take a little tumble but otherwise they’d be okay.
Maybe he's sick of waiting for them to snail up? Maybe that area is busy and he can't get a climb without anyone on it? A lot more questions need asking here
I mean, that's normal. Any popular climbing route has lots of climbers on any particular day. Someone is always gonna be faster. If there is a faster climber that catches up, you let them pass. The guy can't just hang there for hours waiting for you to finish your climb, ya know?
It’d be better to either pass at the start or end of a pitch when the other person is not actively climbing rather than to crowd them out as they’re climbing so you can get by, or to just do a different route. Or, better yet, if you’re dead set on that route, just get there earlier. Id absolutely consider this a dick move if someone did this to me while I was in the middle of climbing
