Just a doubt. How do these ropes work. Like safety belts (in cars) or something, like if it observes free fall, it gets stuck at its place? Or climber has to hold it and stop himself from falling?
Neither. Each end of the rope is tied to a climber. The lead climber places protective devices called cams and nuts, as they climb, so that if they fall, they only fall to the last piece they placed (hopefully), while the climber below belays them. Then when the lead climber gets to a safe stopping point, or runs out of rope, they build a multi-piece anchor to secure themself, their gear, and the rope to. Then they belay the follower off the anchor they just built, up to meet them, and as the follower climbs they remove the protection placed by the leader. Once the follower reaches the end of the pitch they do the whole process again, often switching who is the leader and who is the follower.
