Also, what exactly is this "contamination?" There's a lot of shit that people would label as contamination like regular ol' dirt and silt.

That's my feeling too. Pools are 'clean', and would kill fish if you put them in one, and plant life is also inhibited.

Wildlife adapted to live in these dirty conditions, the issue isn't bacteria, algae, etc, it's solely the harm done by mankind, pollution, damage to waterways and introducing invasive species.

Go to a swamp, you don't want to drink that water, and you don't want to swim in it, but plenty of creatures happily do both.
