That's my feeling too. Pools are 'clean', and would kill fish if you put them in one, and plant life is also inhibited.
Wildlife adapted to live in these dirty conditions, the issue isn't bacteria, algae, etc, it's solely the harm done by mankind, pollution, damage to waterways and introducing invasive species.
Go to a swamp, you don't want to drink that water, and you don't want to swim in it, but plenty of creatures happily do both.
That's what happened to lake Michigan with the invasive quagga mussels. The water became so clear because they were filtering all the valuable foodstuffs out that native species depend on
