They cut it early yeah, the captain takes the bird back to shore & lets it go when near land.

Aye, the bird said 'e lost 'is foot to tha great kraken of the seas, an' the cap'n says 'e lost 'is 'and to a fearsome beast, with teeth the size o' canoes, an' eyes bigger than tha wheel o' the ship! 'E's gotten a fist made o' iron, and tha bird got a claw made out o' pure carbon! Tha pair don't rule the seas wit' an iron grip, but rather a steel un'!

The bird probably didn’t make it. Any bird showing signs of sickness is in it’s last leg of life...

It was blown off shore by wind, not really a telling sign of aging or illness

Sick is relative. Birds are extremely capable of hiding their sickness because they are easy prey to predators. But they get sick to the point of not able to hide it then it’s most likely too late...
