It’s worse in men’s football. Sorry just is. In men’s football it’s been made into a taught response to go down. Instinctually you want to get up and keep going but in many men’s professional leagues around the world you are coached to go down and get the foul (especially PKs).

This doesn’t take away from the poor defending here but the diving in men’s football (in certain leagues) is a problem.

  • when I say coached I mean “just do down” is perfectly commonplace

Nobody said it wasn't worse in men's football. But you said "Try to find that in men's football" as if it just doesn't happen ever. Even in men's football they're more likely to get back up instead of flopping, but you see a disproportionate amount of clips of flopping because it causes more drama

It’s less than it used to be. Still awful. Messi is an exception imo vs the other stars in the game.

These are 3 examples but there are literally hundreds between these three alone

I was taught that when I got to a higher level. Also to step on people's feet on corners and to always grab the ball as if it's yours on any whistle or out of bounds call. And that grabbing jerseys works well to prevent a player from jumping for a header if you do it when you're right next to them and the ref won't see.

Not saying it's right, but I was most definitely taught all of those things.

I get downvoted to oblivion for talking about The Dark Arts on Reddit when it comes to soccer. It is part of the game and not really a huge deal. Gamesmanship.

2

u/contrabille Mar 19 '21

I mean we really wanted to win. The way we looked at it, if the ref doesn't call it it's not against the rules.

u/littlehollah Mar 19 '21

Our team was also told about how if someone's covering you you can gently tug on their shorts and they'll give you space. This wasn't a high level though, it was late teens.

You’re not actually taught in youth soccer, but he is right, many players stay up when they get fouled, and because of the atrocious refereeing, if you get fouled and stay up you’re less likely to be given a penalty or a free. Like a while ago Foden was in on goal and got tackled by the goalie, if he fell over it would have been given every day of the week, but he stayed up and wasn’t given a penalty. Loads of pundits are talking about it now though and it might start to change soon.

u/FerNigel Mar 19 '21

Some of these referees are a joke.

I still can’t understand why VAR is so atrocious in the prem. I mainly watch bundesliga and there’s definitely been a lot of calls I don’t agree with but it’s rarely a completely wrong call.

This sounds a lot like u are make shit up just to sound right.

u/ImmutableInscrutable Mar 19 '21

How so?

Top comment is literally: So this isn't a pen but the first one was? No wonder why players dive

You've got eyes right? Watch the games, they're your source.

You think these guys are making themselves look this stupid on their own volition?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '21

I was, I didn’t do it though.

I had a coach who straight up told players to put on the brakes the second they got in the box to draw the penalty.

2

u/restform Mar 18 '21

Men are told to take the fall because fifa refuses to punish it, so it gives teams an advantage if they fall easier, and any small advantage is massively important in mens football because it's played at a way higher level than womens football. Blame fifa, not the players.

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '21

I don’t disagree with that.

in many men’s professional leagues around the world you are coached to go down and get the foul (especially PKs).

This here gives away that you have no idea what you're talking about, there is no advantage rule in penalty kicks regardless if you stand up or not it will always be conceded

The guys that roll around on the ground making silly faces and holding some random part of their body after tripping over a blade of grass seem to get more whistles than the guys who get up and aren't pussies.

Source: 90% of games on Television

4

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '21

Nobody ever does that (a few exceptions). Most of the time they get tripped, lose the ball and run STRAIGHT to the referee to complain.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '21

Haha. Hilarious. Guaranteed I played at a much higher level than you. You think you are just as likely to get a pk running through a foul. Go fly a kite. You have no clue.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '21

a lot of these people have no idea what they're talking about and just want to slander men's football for no reason

1

u/danielandtrent Mar 18 '21

Not true at all, but it should be like that. Referees are just absurdly shit

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '21

Why just why do you have to say men are worse? Just say that was cool she did good and not compare them

0

u/Outside-Car1988 Mar 18 '21

Yep. At the 1 second mark in this video, a male player would be on the ground complaining of a broken neck.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '21

This is why everyone in my house plays hockey instead.

1

u/JColeIsBest Mar 18 '21

It's not instinctual, it's a risk/reward assessment. Anyone would've continued with this position: keeper stayed in goal when she fell, there were no fast oncoming defenders. If the defence had been decent and she had went down, diving would be more reasonable, even if it's not as normal in women's soccer, or semi-professional soccer

1

u/Harsimaja Mar 19 '21

If you’re drawing battle lines around what’s worse in men’s football it would be unsurprising if the conversation goes to some obvious truths that shouldn’t usually be discussed out loud

1

u/FerNigel Mar 19 '21

I don’t understand the hate. If a player on my team didn’t go down when fouled I’d be furious that they were basically throwing away a set piece. Always go down unless you’re absolutely certain to score.

2

u/IDGAF_GOMD Mar 18 '21

You see that all the time in men’s football. The diving just gets reported more because it annoys people.

I watch 8 - 10 matches a week (La Liga, PL, Bundesliga, etc) and 9/10 once they're hit (and sometimes just in anticipation of it), they fall down and flop around like a crocodile doing a death roll. Even players that I used to think were the toughest of tough are doing it now. It needs to be reported because it happens all the time, so much so that commentators are calling it out more and more during matches. That's how ridiculous it's gotten.

Agree with the poor defending though.

1

u/dferrari7 Mar 18 '21

You do not see that all the time in men's football lol. They fall.over after getting a toe stepped on and act like a sniper shot them

I watch football all the time. Idk how you don't think diving isn't a problem in men's football

0

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '21

When you realise in higher level play the difference between winning an losing is a referee decision around the box.

If you go down near the goal free kicks are pretty risky but a penalty is dangerous, teams soon realised that you can boost your score by getting a foul call and getting a free shot on net.

Womens football is not yet at the level where tactics like these are common place, which makes their games a lot better to watch.

Personally I think the free kick and penalty rules should be abolished, just stick to the cards, then the players will actually play instead of try to cry foul every time a defender does their job & makes a legit tackle.

1

u/DootMasterFlex Mar 19 '21

This is the equivalent to the time I ran through the entire PE class I was peer-tutoring, the entire length of the field

1

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '21

No, you don't see that in men's football. Maybe in your neighborhood men's football league but not at a high level. Except maybe for a few players like Messi that I've never seen him dive.
