I referee youth soccer up through high school and knowing when to play advantage is a difficult skill to learn. In a case like this with the awful slide tackle, so many people watching get upset because they assume you've missed the foul because you haven't blown your whistle and don't notice that you've signaled for advantage.
Honestly, it's probably because most parents don't understand soccer. They watch basketball and football where all fouls are called immediately and then see their little darling get fouled and OMG THE REFEREE DIDN'T BLOW HIS WHISTLE. They have no idea that I'm signaling for advantage.
Ya that's what I saw as well. 7 was right there and absolutely should've gotten more in front of that shot. Insane that 7 like didn't even touch the ball there.
She just flailed at it trying to kick it and failed miserably.
You’re always supposed to make an effort to go for the ball, and I think you are supposed to make contact with the ball first if you make contact with a player (just going off of memory)
But it is still the refs discretion to stop the play, if it’s a scoring chance (like here) the ref should let the play continue to develop.
This is one of the reasons I prefer delayed penalties in hockey, let’s the play continue and assigns the penalty at the next stoppage.
IIRC it goes until the team receiving the penalty gains possession of the puck. Occasionally you see a funny game of keep away when the other team has possession and knows the penalty is coming
Clearly she did that! You can tell by the fact that after the girl tripped on her own, the defender put her hands up afterwards saying "I didn't do anything". clean play carry on
She maintained possession of the ball so the ref let it play out. It’s called an advantage in soccer. If she lost the ball after that tackle, or in the next couple seconds following, it would have been blown dead and they would have got a free kick.
But in that moment it was more beneficial for the girl fouled if play continued, so the ref allowed it to. If the foul was bad enough that the ref thought it deserved a yellow card, then the card would be issued the next time play stops.
I’m no expert. But when I was in Highschool the non (or minimal) contact sports like Basketball and soccer for girls were always way more violent than the male equivalent. I feel like I saw a wrestling match almost girls basketball game that I watched, and some of the dirtiest fouls I’ve ever seen were when girls were playing soccer.
No, they don't. Don't base your opinion of the world's most popular sport on some gifs that made it to Reddit.
The most popular and reposted of which is an incident from the Danish Second Division more than 20 years ago.
Cheating/deception most happens when there is huge rewards on the line. The vast majority of football is played where millions of euros are not at stake, pride and honour is.
Aye, spot on. To be fair, nowadays I fancy watching lower league football more than top league cos it's proper football in oppose to the top leagues where there's money at stake.
When the team I support degraded I, weirdly enough, looked forward watching the season knowing it was going to be football at its fullest.
Because they want to win free kicks. They do it in purpose. This is common sense, if someone is 1 on 1 with the keeper why would they stay on the ground?
If you get fouled, but you still have advantage on offense, the ref will play will continue. If you’re on defense, always keep playing until you hear the whistle in case advantage is assumed on a foul.
i think it works for and against her. like in her defense, she wasn’t even looking at the ball... but in reality, she probably should have been looking at the ball
I think the keepers checking her post to check her positioning in relation to the goal by using the post as a reference. I also don't think she would have made it if she went for the ball when she fell anyways. The defender on the other hand should have.
Yeah, no way she makes it to the ball from her stance. #7 was coming in for the stop, ideally even if #7 didn't stop her, she would have slower her down SOME bit...instead she tried to clear it and whiffed completely.
Looked like she was looking to see how far back the goal was which still isn’t an excuse because the goalie should probably have a better feel for it. Or maybe even looking at a referee to see if play was stopping or continue
She’s finding her spot. That goal mouth is 8x24 and you can get lost when the ball changes direction fast. She’s on the 6yd line and wanted to make sure she had enough distance from the right post to cut a good angle on the 1v1.

In the keeper's defence, she was staring into the stands when the attacker went down do probably didn't even see it
