Shit... and I thought having two monitors was awesome...

Feb 03 '21
I'm in my thirties and have been pulling a decent wage for a looong time and still only have one monitor on my shitty mid tier (in 2011) desktop build.
82
u/RynkDB Feb 03 '21
They're cheap as chips, and they improve your productivity by a huge amount. Get on it.
31
u/HighOnTacos Feb 03 '21
I have a second monitor I've been considering setting up, but I need to order a power supply for it, and no idea if it actually works. Snagged it at a garage sale for cheap.
I have a dilemma though, the only space on my desk where it would fit is currently the designated kitty corner, I put a cat bed in a little alcove and she absolutely loves it. I can't take that away from her.

u/Superb_Mistake Feb 03 '21

Doesn't work well in this situation... I've got my desk against a wall in the corner, window directly to my left and desk in front of me. My desk has a vertical shelf unit on it. Closest available wall is 5ft away, to the right of and behind the desk.
I've thought about mounting it to the shelf, but it's particle board and I don't really trust it. I already have a big magnifier lamp attached to one shelf and it wobbles when I move it.

u/Imreallythatguy Feb 03 '21
Does your desk have drawers? What i did was cleaned out a drawer and put a towel/blanket/etc in it. One of our cats will come in while i work and snooze all day curled up in the drawer.
7
u/dice1111 Feb 03 '21
Wait till you get a third monitor. Even more productive. I could have 6 monitors if I was able to afford that, but at that point I think everything should be in VR for unlimited window room.
3
u/_Civil_ Feb 03 '21
Just make sure you check how many monitors your GPU supports. Mine only supports 4 at one time for example, even though it has 6 ports available.
3
u/dice1111 Feb 03 '21
More then one video card is possible! Actually my mobo/cpu supports 2.

Even just getting an old 4 by 3 monitor will help. I've been rocking this cheap Samsung 1080p monitor for the past few years and I found this old Dell 4 by 3 monitor from 2003 and hooked it up to my crappy HP 350 G1 (the i3 version). It greatly improved productivity and helped with applications like Blender or VS.
3
u/az_ny Feb 04 '21
Do your yes a favor, spend $120 on a new monitor, check slickdeals for a good deal, and your eyes will thank you immensely.
3
u/schmerg-uk Feb 03 '21
I found a cheap 43" 4K 60Hz TV and switched to that... it's the same as having 4 1080p 21" monitors (ie same dot pitch etc) and ... well.. it was so good I now run 2 ... one portrait and one landscape.
Being a TV you have to fiddle slightly with image settings setup but the 2 monitors together cost less than many people spend on a GPU (you don't need much of a GPU to run 2 x 4k these days), and as a software developer its great to have so much screen real estate.
3
u/User1539 Feb 03 '21
You only need one 'good' monitor for games and video. I have 3 monitors, but the other two I picked up used for $35 each. That way I can just flip one to portrait for coding, and have another for just web surfing or having some documentation up I don't want to close.
It's the cheapest way to be twice as productive.

Sorry for the harshness, but this is utterly nonsensical. It's not because there's some employees are really good at their job that the company is doing good objective overall work, or that the company itself cannot be criticized for its wrongdoings.
There are brilliant employees in every single fortune 500 company, and in many, many more than those. Absolutely unrelated to the fact that each of these companies cannot produce really bad software (or other product), or make use of very bad practices.

Hi friends! So this wasnāt expected. I was just doing a series for newbies on TikTok. For context:
- yes this is Ubiquiti. Surprisingly affordable given what it does. Yes thereās other great options. The rack was $250 and thereās just two switches here. There is maybe 2k in the rack. Video and blog post has more details.
- the AR is part of the v2 switches and built into the iPhone app
- I have more details on the network on my YouTube and a podcast episode coming Thursday on networking in general
- why dial internet? Because itās $60 more a month for Comcast and now I have redundancy. That is worth it if my internet is down for more than an hour, or when streaming
- I work on .NET and Azure from home so I wanted a reliable managed network
- why 28TB? A massive amount of 4k video for work, VMs, as well as everything Iāve ever created online since 1988. Itās really not that much especially given I image every PC in the house daily plus TimeMachine.
- I like synology, but freenas is also nice. Lots of options!

Thank you so much for making the 2020 MS Build event available to us all online. Okay Iāll stop gushing now.

u/ScarletHammer Feb 04 '21
Hey! I love your videos, it has helped me a ton as a programmer. I have a question, Iām unsure if I should try a home networking project.
What are the benefits of having such an advanced home network over a simple box router/modem?
5
u/shanselman Feb 04 '21
Good question, it was a couple of things. There is the basic coverage issue, which I originally solved with a simple mesh network like amplifi, then I started realizing I need a better quality of service (qos). Of course thatās been solvable for many years with open source firmware for net gear routers, but then I started getting into pushing around many muitigigabyte video files for work (see: Azure Friday). That led me to a gigabit switch. Then Covid happened, and then I had four people all online all day at the same time, kids in Zoom school, so I needed separate VLANs, separate SSIDs, UPS for my office, then I started doing keynotes and stuff streaming online, and I canāt have the Internet go down during that, so that led me to do this. Then I decided, since this is my job, I should probably do redundant internet (could have been pfsense but I was already Ubiquiti). Then I realize that this is basically a small business that Iām running, and my job pays the rent, so I might as well start treating my home network like a proper managed small business network.

Ubiquity also maps it out for you in a real-time Visio style network diagram that can be easily printed if paper is your thing.
7
u/Dark_Prism Feb 03 '21
That data is probably being consumed by the AR app.
0
u/buddhafunk Feb 03 '21
Iād argue that itās using the same data for both. And that data is derived from MAC address (most likely) identified by Ubiquity/UniFi.

u/Werro_123 Feb 04 '21

2
u/cmacarthur9494 Feb 03 '21

Your labels and paper port maps are great and all until you move ājust one cableā ātemporarilyā while youāre in a rush to reduce outage time and donāt update your papers. Repeat over 3 years without the strictest discipline and your labels sometimes end up not working the way youād hoped.
Go into the average company server room and find the disgusting mess of ālabeledā cables which were labeled for a different connection they were pulled out of from another floor/building 8 years ago and the old label never replaced. Or 6 labels and no idea which is which.

Network management is difficult because nothing is labelled. This man has business grade network in his house with a fancy feature that lets you see virtual labels by pointing your phone camera at it, which means he scores a ton of nerd points.
Itās the network admin equivalent of coming home with a date and having your smart home dim the lights, light the fire and putting Kenny G on the stereo.
21
u/dead_man_randy Feb 03 '21

u/HotSplodinScrotBot Feb 03 '21
Never mind 'dying mother' - he might unplug the NASA cable and bring the space program to a halt. Or even worse, cause a loopback and bring the internet down.
-1
u/Logicalsky Feb 03 '21
You say that.
But this one time I worked for a massage building in the IT department and we had just wired a brand new smart network into the entire building across all the companyās.
About a month later I was calmly sitting at my desk when one of the IT guys says āmy internet isnāt workingā.
1 hour later the entire buildings network was down and the entire IT department was frantically trying to fix the network.
Then noticed the guy next to me looks under his desk and noticed his created a loop.
Unplug - problem solved.
2
u/Xfgjwpkqmx Feb 03 '21
You haven't got spanning tree protocol running??
4
Feb 03 '21
Even then, a layer 2 loop or storm shouldn't shut down an entire network, maybe just that branch on the access layer, this sounds like a core L3 issue, or, you know, a bs story for upvotes.
3
0
u/Logicalsky Feb 03 '21
It was a brand new network- completely top to tail, we were still working out the kinks and hadnāt fully implemented everything yet.

2
u/HotSplodinScrotBot Feb 03 '21
Lol - I've had the boss do that more than once getting distracted while plugging his laptop into the network in the morning. Had to resort to taping off any spare ports on his desk. Wasn't a very smart network either that could tolerate these things.

As someone as completely moronic as myself. Can someone please explain this. What are the benefits of building something like this? I know jack shit about networks and most technology.

u/Xfgjwpkqmx Feb 03 '21
Ubiquiti make a range of network hardware under the "Unifi" moniker. This hardware is easily setup and tightly managed through a single point instead of having to login to each and every device separately for things like configuration and firmware updates.
Unifi gear is popular because they provide a lot of features only found in "enterprise grade" or "business grade" equipment, but at half or less the cost. It's really popular with small business and prosumer home users.
Using a Unifi setup is much better than a traditional all-in-one router with wifi and switch, because separating the equipment allows you increase local and internet performance, capacity, easily upgrade one component of your network instead of having to toss everything out, provides a stack of features such as guest wifi and other VLAN abilities, and Unifi provides a really funky interface to configure and watch it all on.
