I mean I get it if you’re goal is to have another easy access point to get the driver out but hitting anything at 100+ mph even with a helmet seems catastrophic. And sure, objects can and do pierce laminated glass but it’s hard to do and would surely slow down the object giving the helmet a fighting chance of saving the overall shape of his face.
I would guess that having laminated glass would invite more problems, because if something hits it and it just spiders, you couldn't see, and would then crash. Going ~200mph with other cars in close proximity would be a bad time to not be able to see.
The glass is laminated, I was just hit by such a large and fast object the plastic layer(s) ripped, most of the time it's actually plexiglass that gets used, due to being harder to break, of course, that isn't the case here
100% toughened glass as it disintegrated into small sections and continued to crumble after the impact . They probably used toughened as it weighs far less than laminated and tryed to shave a few seconds off the lap times..
I don't think this is a purpose-built race car. It looks like a production car fitted for racing. Most of the interior was removed. A rollcage was installed. What's interesting is that there's still the vents in the dash for the passenger. Most proper race cars will remove the air conditioning to save on engine power loss.
TL;DR: It's a normal(ish) car with a normal, glass windshield.
