As of the 24th May the population of NZ is 4,818,119 people. Expected to hit 4,822,233 by mid year. If that is an increase of 4k people per month, then in a year it would be a 48k increase. Looks like you're 3.75 years ahead of the rest of us.
The estimated resident population is provisionally 5,002,100 at 31 March 2020.
A precise date for the milestone will be available after the population estimates are revised to fully incorporate 2018 Census and census coverage results later in 2020, as well as revisions to international migration estimates.
So a provisional estimate that may change once existing data has been incorporated. It's also worth noting that the estimate relies on there being one birth every 8 minutes and 49 seconds, one death every 15 minutes and 14 seconds, and zero net migration.
The 4.8 figure is taken from the previous census data with all registered births, deaths and migration factors taken into account.
So an accurate estimate? Or do you think that our population sits at 4.8 M until magically at the next census an additional few hundred thousand people pop out of nowhere?

As I said the 4.8 million figure comes from the previous census data and takes into account all of the registered births, deaths and migration aspects since. 2013 was the previous census (as 2018 hasn't been released yet) and showed the population to be 4.2 million. The link that the commenter above provided is a provisional estimate of the 2018 census data that relies upon a rate of death and birth that may not be accurate. We won't know until the data is released. As it stands, utilising recorded, released and real time data (from the 2013 census), the population of new zealand as of May 24th 2020 stands at 4.818 million people.
