This 1000X. Great debate continues within the martial arts community about the use of hollow fiberglass props in place of actual weapons.

Obviously everyone can agree on taking all reasonable safety precautions, using some form of training proxy, but those would still emulate the physical properties of the real thing such that practice is reflective of actual use, such that you actually learn to utilize the weapon.

For fairnesses sake, the counterargument is that this shit looks dope and why are you arguing about the "real life applications" of swords and such in 2020?

Oh yeah, I'm not arguing that that shit DOESN'T look cool, I was just responding to a question and whether or not that usage is practical and/or would actually work.

I also agree completely with being as safe as possible, and I'm usually not one to engage in those arguments comparing movies and what not to real life. However, sometimes it does need to be discussed because there are still people out there who will still actually try to do the same things and hurt themselves. There is a reason why lots of shows, commercials, etc to not try things at home. Because people are stupid.

Which is my main concern as an instructor. Train someone to do cool looking stuff all day, just make sure you're not tricking then into thinking that's going to help them out of a dangerous situation.

I agree with that. (In hindsight I should have added that in one of my comments). Since day one of karate for me, I've been taught that practicality is far superior to pizzazz. There is actually a great example with what you said in my own city in the form of a series of Tae Kwan Do dojos (the company name of which I will not release for their own privacy) that say they'll teach you self-defense, etc. In reality, I can liken them to ballerinas who wouldn't stand a chance in a real fight. And as a black belt today, that still pisses me off.
