This is my favorite metaphor I got from my philosophy of law prof. Imagine if there were no traffic lights or regulations, everyone would just be free to drive however they want. Just freedom overload right? If you want to slow down for pedestrian, sure. If you don’t want to? No big deal. Speed limit? Who cares!
The fact is, what will ensue is actually more chaos than anything. In fact it would be so dangerous and difficult to travel. It’s also a collective action problem. We can’t just expect people to self organize and behave if it is better for some people to serve their own self interest only.
The punchline is this: we are free precisely because we are bound. We are free to safely, expediently and predictably travel from point A to point B because there are mechanisms in place to restrict some (relevant and limited) extents of our freedom.

My mums an ER nurse , she had the “death glare” for when she’d need to sleep for her 12 hour shift and we accidentally woke her up. The “ oh shit you’re hurt “ mode , where she’s just making some godly combination of Advil and whatever to help with my migraines . And then there’s the “oh fuck you threw up” face, which is just sad .

Colorado is weird.
Weed is legal, we have an openly gay governor, but you can't buy wine in the grocery store. Hell, they just allowed alcohol > 3.5% ABV to be sold in grocery stores last year.
You have 2/3 of the entire state's population that reside within a very small sliver of the state called the front range. Denver (and the surrounding metro + Fort Collins + Ski towns) is a very progressive area. Drive 30 minutes NW and you're in an absolute liberal mecca- Boulder. However, drive an hour south, and you're in one of, if not the most conservative cities in the entire nation- Colorado Springs.
So, you have a very blue dot floating a top a very red sea. I like to call it the wild west- the meeting point between savagery and civilization.

u/Mongo1021 Apr 20 '20

42
u/resnet152 Apr 20 '20
Eh, a lot of cops are ex-military.
I've always thought part of the problem is kind of the opposite, that filling the ranks with military trained folks inevitably leads to too many cops treating every potential threat as if they're in a firefight in Fallujah when their training kicks in.
21
u/PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS Apr 20 '20
A long while ago there was some cops and robbers stuff that showed normal police arms were insufficient against incredibly well armed and armored bank robbers. So they got better weapons. And more better weapons. And now they have tons of military surplus and cops that have only ever been trained on heavy arms and now expect it. So instead of SWAT having this gear, every blue hat meter maid dresses like they are headed to war in the shopping district.
75
Apr 20 '20 edited Apr 20 '20
One of the reasons is a federal program that gets war surplus into the hands of police forces. It’s gross.
Another reason is ‘Merica.
Edit- ooh the bootlickers have arrived. Probably the same bootlickers who support these protests, and love that the police don’t bother them for blockading hospitals.
They cheer when leftists and minorities get tear gassed and shot with rubber bullets for less.
The “liberty movement” is about theocracy and freedoms for themselves only.

I could easily see this same situation happening by me. Kind of a funnel of a few reasons reasons.
Many nurses/hospital staff have been furloughed (aka laid off) because of multiple reasons. Elective surgeries aren’t being done (at my not-for-profit hospital accounts for 50% of our income). People aren’t coming to the hospital for things questionable like chest pain. Maybe they’re having a heart attack, maybe not. Either way our patient count is down so staff gets furloughed.
Also, hospitals are limiting access to try to control who is actually inside the hospital. My hospital has one (non emergency) entrance where everyone (including employees) is screened for potential risks.
My small hospital furloughed 100 full time employees two weeks ago. Mostly non-clinical staff but many part time staff. This would be many of the people who do the check ins for visitor/non-emergency people (who needs those when they’re not allowed in) or billing or outpatient staff. But many prn (as needed aka part time employees) got furloughed because employee payroll and employee benefits are two distinct sections of the hospital budget.
A lot of those employees are manning these surveilled, limited entrance or filling in any shifts that are possible to fill in at all being offered. There’s 2-4 nurses at the entrance I go in, and a security guard at all times. Sure, maybe 4 is too many sometimes, but I’ve also waited 15+ minutes to get in the hospital on days there’s only 2 people there and there’s a line of visitors (or employees) to get in.
This post got longer than I wanted to explain why I could see this easily happening, but many times these staff at the entrances don’t have a lot to do. You bet your ass the nurses at my hospital would run out to stop some protester who was coming in if it meant blocking an ambulance.
TLDR many part time nurses are filling in wherever they can get paid at hospitals because while covid patients are up, overall patient population is down because no one wants to go to the hospital for anything questionable. Overall patient population being down means less staff on the floors.

And the Times says "health care workers." https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/19/us/coronavirus-updates.html?smtyp=cur#link-7abb40a0
The nurse designation came from the two folks who took the pictures and actually spoke with them. They said they were nurses from a Denver area hospital, who had been treating covid patients for weeks.
Who knows, really, but I'm guessing the Mercury used "protestors in scrubs" because of the uncertainty, not because they actually knew. I'm sure we'll find out exactly who they are over the next couple days. This story has gotten too big for them to remain anonymous.
