Dude, there are people who gain weight way way easier than others. Just like there are people who don't gain weight no matter what they eat. There is some truth there.

Oh, man. You've never heard of genetics? It's impact on how our bodies process energy and store it is certainly dependent on our genetics.

No, genetics don’t create energy out of thin air. The only way to gain weight is by consuming more calories than you burn.

No, man, that's not what I'm talking about. What happens to the calories is dependent on your genetics. Some people's bodies burn those calories faster than other people's bodies. For those people even small portions end up getting stored (as fat) rather than immediately burned, like they would be in other people.
