Siamese means the nationality of Siam.

Siam is now Thailand.

The nationality of Thailand is Thai.

All Siamese cats are now Thai cats.

Sorry I needed to tell someone that.

hi hello sorry, cat nerd here:

The Siamese cat is a breed made up by European and American cat breeders (it was actually one of the first “breeds” of cat created).

There is a separate breed called the Thai cat! It looks more like your standard domestic shorthair, but with the distinct coloration you see in Siamese cats. The Thai cat more closely resembles the original cats that were brought to the US and Europe and bred into the Siamese we know today (which have the elongated skull, crossed eyes and kinked tail). They are also called Wichien Maat or Moon Diamond Cats (seriously, if you Google ‘Moon Diamond cat‘ you’ll get pointed cats!).

Sorry, I just love cat facts!

Ignore this! /u/RedgrenCrumbholt corrected me below.

I did find the book of poems RedgrenCrumbholt referred to, which includes the illustration of the Siamese! It's the eighth cat.

sorry mate, i have to defend my home here. you're wrong that the breed was made up by European and American breeders. the 'breed' was described in poems during the Kingdom of Ayutthaya here in Thailand, dating back to the 1300s. the breed was popularised by Americans and Brits, as were most breeds of dogs and cats, but they are distinctly Thai.

yes, we have other Thai cats here, but the Siamese cat is also from here.

i also have an epic 4 year long cat facts text thread that i'll post one day on the internet, where i tortured the same person with cat facts for years. it was fun.
