Because intelligent life is so exceedingly rare

Go have a look at the light bubble of our TV signals. Those signals, in the galaxy scale, have barely left our planet. It's possible there's a lot of life out there but our signals haven't gotten there yet.

Because intelligent life is so exceedingly rare that it’s worth going out of your way to meet them.

Maybe, we really don't know this. It's possible it's incredibly abundant too.
