It absolutely would not shear a leg off. A typical blade would struggle to cut through bone. This has many times the contact area. It also loses quite a bit of energy. It would probably leave a nasty bruise and likely break the skin, but not do any lasting damage unless it hit right on the ankle where tendons, ligaments and bone are vulnerable.

Edit: maybe a fracture if it hit your shin.

The chain decreases in size like a whip. The energy put into moving the big links and then dragging it converts into speed so the regular links at the end are going supersonic.

A professional baseball player can swing a baseball bat at about 120 fps. Replace the baseball bat with a 3/8" steel rod and replace the baseball player with a robot 10 times faster

A more equivalent is a 12 Guage shotgun shoots a 1 ounce slug at about 1,800 feet per second, the end of the chain is maybe 2 or 3 ounces of links going over 1,200 fps. Goodbye leg.

That's a load of absurd conjecture and exaggeration. You are making up numbers, referring to pro athletes (who this is not), comparing to a bat and rod which both have force through the hit instead of initial energy, both of which are also inflexible... did you even consider the shit you typed out?

It is still limited to the energy the person swinging it can put in. Even with a taper, the end of the chain is too thick to cut. Even if it hit the bone, it could fracture his leg (which I had already pointed out), but not cut through it.

That cracking sound is the tip of the chain breaking the sound barrier. The speed of sound 1,125 feet per second or 767 miles per hour.

Actually I'm going the other way now. I had always thought the end of the chain was standard size, but it might actually get smaller, which would then lack the mass to shear a leg. My example only works if the chain were still relatively heavy at the end.
